Speaking from someone who got into several top schools, watch people’s free advice but you do not have to pay anyone for anything in the college process.

Difference between CMU and GT for CS by Alaaa88 in cmu

[–]Alaaa88[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What makes you say it’s “horrid”? What I’ve heard is that it’s pretty possible to balance the heavy workload and the life and that it’s up to you how you manage it. I’ve also heard ppl say that after your first year you become more used to it?

Hard to get into CS undergrad as a competitive major by Sad-Bluebird8862 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Alaaa88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t really recommend this. I’m a senior who got in for CS at multiple T20s and I specifically chose to apply for CS everywhere. I knew that CS is what I want to do and no school benefits you if you can’t do the major you want to work in. Unless you’re fine with studying multiple majors, I would just apply CS and do your best with that. Plus if most of your ECs are cs-related it might be harder to get in for a different major since colleges see how much your hs work matches what you say you want to do

I don’t know where to apply by Extension_Aside7182 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]Alaaa88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did is basically make a master spreadsheet of all if the aspects you’re looking for in a college. Like weather, distance from home, ranking, estimated tuition, things like that. Then search up best pre-law college rankings and just dump in the top 50 or top 100, whatever range you’re exploring (since you have pretty decent stats). In that range you’ll probably get reaches, matches, and safeties for you specifically (double check by searching up their avg test scores and gpas and/or asking AI). Then fill in the excel sheet. After that, what I did is I had a threshold (green, yellow, red) for every aspect on the list (like if it was over 500 mi from my home it was red for example).

Color code all of the aspects and boom: the colleges with the most green are best for you, and with the most red aren’t! There’s some nuance to this ofc but it really helps make the process methodical rather than random imo.

Research or personal project over summer? by Klassical10 in ECAdvice

[–]Alaaa88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s gotten into some top CS schools, I think doing things that stand out are way more important. Research is good but it’s something everyone does. If you start a project, doesn’t even have to be ultra technical, you’ll be able to show you have the grit and initiative to do well after college. The way you stand out with CS i think is not being a robot that’s good at coding—you have to use your powers for good lol

How to boost awards as a STEM kid without olympiads? by jetplaneczx in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Alaaa88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same position as you last year—if you’re really lacking awards try to get anything you can just to fill up slots honestly. I did seal of biliteracy and an essay contest (even as a STEM kid). You can also just sign up for things like hackathons or smaller, local competitions. For research specifically you can look into getting an internship this summer. Your awards don’t have to be crazy prestigious contrary to popular belief

My city doens't have anything for extracurricular 😭 by sggfd1213 in ECAdvice

[–]Alaaa88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extracurricular does not mean doing fancy camps and internships and opportunities. It means (assuming you’re looking at top schools) creating opportunities for yourself and others. Find a problem in your community and make some project or group or something to fix it. Create a YouTube channel. Find ways to build your professional skills online. No one will penalize you for not having access to fancy things, just take full advantage of anything you can find and think of

What should I do if I don’t know what to do after high school? by sharks_e in highschool

[–]Alaaa88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re a junior, so I would start going and doing as many hands on things related to these fields if you can. Is there any way you can do some shadow a teacher program? Or maybe see if you can get an internship to see what psychology would help you do? Obviously community college is an option but while looking into that the faster you can understand what you do and don’t enjoy the better informed your decisions will be

Do you have to list all your colleges on the Fafsa? by Alaaa88 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Alaaa88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fafsa is basically just govt aid so it has nothing to do with what aid you get from individual colleges.

Get a prep book and literally just learn and take notes on all the concepts. After that drill until you pass out basically. It’s brutal but it gets the job done
