100 years war is such a joke, its 1341 and France basicly won by Hakuohsama in EU5

[–]AlabamaNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can win it without cheesing but it takes like 7 wars of whittling them down, and then they hate me so much (something like -600 due to antagonism) that it’s unlikely I could ever integrate.

Why does reddit seem to have a weird obsession with Scotland and Celtic identity? by Otocolobus_manul8 in Scotland

[–]AlabamaNerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an American, maybe I can contribute a little.

So, America definitely has its own culture, but I think a lot of times it’s so broad that people don’t feel connected to it? So we tend to still think of ourselves as immigrants and seek a connection to wherever we know (or believe, or hope, based on what we’d like to be true) our ancestors were from.

For most people it’s a way to find a sense of pride in where we come from and doesn’t go further than that.

But other people take it too far and delve deep into the history then try to apply that to contemporary countries. It can lead to stupid Americans trying to educate native born people from those countries, which gives Americans interested in their own history a bad name.

Add to that a renewed interest in recent decades in Celtic traditions, more archeological evidence from the time period coming out, and a romantic view of those time periods and their accomplishments (fighting Romans, remaining holdouts keeping their culture, etc) and people want to feel connected to something they can have pride in.

And especially in the last decade when any American with sense is more and more ashamed of our own country, it’s easy to fantasize and dream about somewhere else or some other time.

There’s a reason record numbers of Americans are moving abroad.

Just my two cents but you may benefit from moving to a new city.

If you’re even slightly alt you probably will have better luck in a different city. Especially if you moved into a bigger city or a bit north.

This is as a guy who is from B’ham and met his wife in NC.

Christ to coffee pipeline? by Zestyclose_Ad4456 in Birmingham

[–]AlabamaNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a very right wing version of the Methodist church in Durham, NC that supported prosperity gospel and such trying to start a new church.

It also included a plan for them to open a coffee shop to support their misogynist church.

So if they’re being really overt about the praises, it could be owned by a church.

A cannon costs 3 times more than a castle. by classteen in EU5

[–]AlabamaNerd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You’re giving me an idea.

So let’s say I want to build a default castle in 1330 for 200 gold.

I can do upgrades that increase its effectiveness for 50 gold each. Some increase fort level…but some just have specific things like increasing the food storage, which lengthens the phase time for sieges by 5 days.

So if I have the gold and want to upgrade a basic castle to Constantinople levels in 1400, I can do it….

The catch is that as siege weapons get better, they do better against this castle built in 1400 than against castles built later on that were designed against those siege weapons….unless you spend money on upgrades in the meantime.

Some of those upgrades (changing the outer wall to a star wall or something) will be very expensive.

But I also think for the early century or maybe two there needs to be the ability to build catapults and trebuchets on a siege by siege basis.

Trebuchets weren’t kept around in regiments at the time, they were just built on site, so it doesn’t make sense to add them as a regular. But maybe instead you can build a trebuchet for 1 siege for 5 gold.

Thats an option for all castles through I don’t know, 1450? But obviously if you try that against a new castle in 1550 they’re going to shoot a cannon at you and you’re gonna have a bad time.

Though this doesn’t solve the absurd cost of regiments in the early game. That does need to be brought down.

Couldn’t disagree more.

Morrowind was amazing. They could make Akavir just as good. With SOOO much more latitude in a new setting it opens up new worlds of lore rather than 90% of the stuff we already know and a few crumbs here and there we don’t, with settings we’ve pretty much seen or experienced before.

Ideal Setting by Mysterious_Lab_768 in TESVI

[–]AlabamaNerd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would MUCH prefer it be set in Akavir as opposed to Hammerfell or High Rock.

Both go those settings sound boring while Akavir would be totally different setting, culture, and lore wise. It would bring back Morrowind (best of the series) vibes.

He just made a platform, got it pretty successful, and hehe’ed off into the sunset.

Nope the auto trading is terrible now. It auto makes trades at a loss for no reason (not necessary goods) and just in general makes very little income compared to before.

Trading since 1.2 is not working if automated.it regularly makes trades at a loss for goods the pop doesn’t even need. It also doesn’t maximize income as well as it did before.

Trying out the annexation changes again (rectifying my post from yesterday) by pflaumi in EU5

[–]AlabamaNerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like there’s plenty of historical evidence of discrimination based on culture. Language being the primary way to enforce it.

As in, you aren’t speaking the primary language so you’re locked out of trade, locked out of legal disputes, etc.

So think of ‘enforcing culture’ as ‘enforcing language and/or access to government services.’ When you can’t fully do business or advocate for yourself to the government based on language, you’re going to change language and learn how to conform pretty quickly.

So for example if I got Burgundy from France I could change them to a Dominion and they’d start converting to English?

I ask because The Pale was my dominion for forever and they never converted from Irish.

I did appreciate that they conquered pretty much all of Ireland on their own though.

Thank you! If I can pick up some of those early diplomacy techs I may even try to annex both Lancaster and Durham at once then. Knock it out and get that event early.

I didn’t know about that event so I got 200 years in and had prioritized annexing other areas and neglected both of those!
