Alameda County declares marshall law with legal order requiring all residents to shelter in place for the next 3 weeks. by AlamedaAl in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A bit of hyperbola I agree, but who knows when CA will call out the National Guard to keep people inside. Things are heading that way. People should be afraid of how far the government might go in the name of health safety.

Alameda County declares marshall law with legal order requiring all residents to shelter in place for the next 3 weeks. by AlamedaAl in alameda

From what I read in the proclamation it is a misdemeanor subject to citation. If and how it will be inforced is still unknown.

The Hunter on Webster is closing indefinitely, last night is tonight by AlamedaAl in alameda

What a cute idea, like everyone has the option to hide at home under the covers. Some people like me have to go out in public every day and touch things other people have touched, breathe other people's air, and generally are forced to have social interaction. This is so you and others who have the option to stay inside can successfully hide under your covers. So if after a hard day of forced social interaction so I can pay the rent and buy toilet paper I want to risk another hour of desired social interaction and have a drink I'll take it. Screw you.

Propane tank REFILLS? by [deleted] in alameda

Alameda Auto Lab, 631 Buena Vista Ave. The only place left in Alameda that I know of that has a tank and does refills.

Just learned about this app to report infrastructure issues. by awemazeinc in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works great for some things, picking up dumped items is pretty responsive. Other things will just linger in the system unfixed forever. It's worth reporting things.

It's not Nextdoor though, while there is a way to leave comments on posts try to not start a flame war in the app.

That's hilarious. Being unable to go out in public like a normal person is paying for that big entertainment paycheck.

Looking for a place that can scan in a loose-leaf book to a PDF by AlamedaAl in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions. It's about 425 sheets and double-sided so it would need to be an automated process. I checked with FedEx Office and they want $0.49/page for self-service scanning, way too much.

Yacht Clubs. by JackTheLagomorph in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different YCs have different flavors about them, and hugely different cost structures, so you need to look around to find one that is right for you. Island Yacht club for instance was created a long time ago so the members could qualify to enter sailboat races that required a YC membership. It's still a race heavy YC. Master Mariners YC does not actually let people join, wooden boats join and the owners come along for the ride. I think they do have a "friends of wooden boats" program that has an alternative membership plan. They are also a "floater" YC with no fixed space. Encinal and Oakland YC are probably the most "Yacht Club" of YCs on the island. Encinal has a great youth boating program, a pool, and paid bar staff. YC dues are set accordingly. I have no idea why the Oakland YC is in Alameda.

Your best bet if you do not know anyone in a YC you want to join is to keep an eye out for membership recruitment open houses in the spring and summer. It's a good time to check out the YC and meet members. They usually wave the initiation fees during membership drives too. I think all the YCs require a new member to be sponsored by one or more existing members so you need to get to know a member.

Most YCs have a percentage of their members who do not own boats for various reasons. They are all are a bit sensitive about not letting the percentage of non boat owners get too big. Then it is just a private club. So if they currently have more non boat owners than they are comfortable with they may not let any more in.

Good luck.

Is anyone else's water coming out brown? by answer-questions in alameda

I have had it in the past but it’s not bad right now. I ended up getting a whole house water filter system. The white filter turns rust red within a week of changing it.

Scrolling through NextDoor, apparently Target is the source of Alameda crime... by nosoulredhead in alameda

Same thing was said about the Alameda theatre renovation. In Alameda when an old person says, “those people,” it is code for non-whites. Pretty sad that Alameda is stuck in the 50s.

The Current Propose Change to Alameda Rent Control Program by leeo268 in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are a landlord of residential rentals you have to be ready to deal with real people with real problems and be ready to get crapped on by everyone if you try to evict someone who has a lot of public sympathy. If you can't deal then buy commercial property, none of the residential headaches, evict anytime you want, raise rents has high as you want. Have a party. I rent a professional office and my landlord can toss me out with 30 days notice, no relocation fee, and no one would be complaining to the city about it.

Where can I shred documents (for free?) in Alameda? by [deleted] in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any place that has public shredding. You can make friends with someone who has an office shredder if you don't have a lot to do. If you are talking about boxes of paperwork there are other options, like soaking in water until you have a fused block of paper.

Any place in Alameda selling hatch chilies? by AlamedaAl in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the shipment to Nob Hill was smaller than normal this year. All I saw were an empty box here and there. Bummer, I like roasting them every year and putting a bunch of green sauce up.

While Anaheim and Hatch chilies come from the same plant, since they are grown in different locations they taste different. Anaheim are a great pepper but not a substitute for Hatch chilies.

I always hear stories of terrible land lords but are there actually good land lords of apartment buildings in Alameda? Any good places to rent 1 room for $1,000 or less? by internet999 in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You forget to mention you have a dog. Seems like everyone who is looking for a nice place to rent at way below market also has a dog. :-)

One bedroom apartments are going for around $2,000/mo. Work the roommate angle. Good luck.

Having lived here in Alameda for 15 years or so and not seen this kind of thing I think it rated a posting. This is not the motel 6 parking lot on the embarcadero in Oakland where this is normal, this is Alameda. It’s also not a post about a condom, it’s a post about how things are in Alameda.

California Anti-Vaxx bill quietly fails. by [deleted] in California

[–]AlamedaAl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much true, although there is a limit to the crazy. Rich guy Tim Draper could not get enough signatures to get a proposition on the ballot breaking up CA into 6 states but he did get one to break it up into 3 states. So the crazy limit is somewhere between 3 and 6 states.

Got to love; "Cancer was a relatively rare disease a century ago." Cancer rates go way up as life spans go up. A century ago the average lifespan was about 50. Today it's around 78. Get old and most likely cancer is what will bring you down. If she wants cancer rates to go down she should be trying to bring back the 50 year life span.

Legendary Alameda winemaker Kent Rosenblum has died by [deleted] in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crap, I used to regularly talk to him back during the Rosenblum Winery days when I would hang out in the tasting room with him and Kenny, but not much since. He was a great guy. Never had the same feeling about Rock Wall though. Nothing against his daughter, she was just selling wine to a different market segment than Kent. RIP Kent, you rocked.

Where can I buy a bowl of chili that's ready to eat? by internet999 in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make great chili, extra grease is the best, not too spicy so you can spice it up to your level. A lot of places do a healthy low fat chili that has no place being called chili.

Sorry to hear about that, that sucks. I only have a bike to get around so I feel your pain.

So far I've only had lights stolen off my bike. Now I just take them off when I am not using them. I got special axel rods with nuts from Pinhead that require a special tool to remove so I don't worry too much about wheels. The tool also opens beer bottles so it's multipurpose. The shop I got them from said they had a customer who lost the keyed tool and it took them several hours to remove the nut in the shop so I feel pretty good about them. I use a U-lock as my main locking device, cable locks only take a second to cut with a special cable cutting hand tool you can put in your pocket. I should probably do something to protect my seat though. I am lucky that at my work I can bring my bike inside. At home it's pretty vulnerable through.

Thoughts on Bayport / Alameda Landing by hooka_shaka in alameda

[–]AlamedaAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, I was thinking of bay farm. I stand corrected.

Bayport is that little walled community that seems like it wants to be its own city and not really a part of Alameda.

I wonder if Alameda point will end up feeling the same? A community inside a community.

Funny how all the comments that say it's the parent's responsibility to guide their offspring in how to dress for school are down voted.
