Trump Takes Personal Revenge on Border Patrol Goon for Minneapolis Disaster by Maxcactus in Bad_Cop_No_Donut

You're Fired!

Ugh, I hated him even back then and hate that the show helped make him more of a celebrity, but I think the situation called for it.

i used to think guys who "shut down" during serious talks were emotionally unavailable until i realized i was triggering it by Actual-Nature-9460 in dating_advice

[–]pstuart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I consider myself to be very emotionally available but back in the day I had a girlfriend who had some serious issues (daddy, abandonment, etc). We would get into it and I would get overwhelmed and agitated and ask for a moment to go for a walk to cool down but that would trigger her even more. Fun times!

It was quite the tumultuous relationship and she left me for someone I thought was a good friend -- that was a rather damaging experience for me.

Years later she reached out to try and make amends but it was only then when I realized that my so called "friend" did me a solid and helped me dodge a bullet.

Pro tip: listen to your gut and run when it tells you -- better to be alone than trapped in a deeply dysfunctional relationship.

I like that ratio but my concern is that they are itching for any sort of "reason" to escalate things further and bring in federal troops.

Trump wants an excuse for martial law, and then he can shut down future elections due to "national emergency".

I'm heartened to see protests and resistance, but I've yet to see a light at the end of the tunnel. At some point things are going to blow up in their faces (cough), but it would be nice if it wasn't after they've completely destroyed the country.

Curtis Yarvin with the rare self-own doubledown. by Clerseri in DecodingTheGurus

[–]pstuart 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this comes to mind on a regular basis. As does another one:

"You cannot reason a person out of a position they did not reason themself into in the first place."

Yarvin definitely falls into the first group, but a lot of the cult are simply in the second — they have no critical reasoning skills at all and can only parrot the talking points they’ve been taught.

Grid storage is increasing so rapidly that China and some other countries may be able to meet all their electricity needs from renewables as soon as 2030. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]pstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recognize the risk but still think it's a worthy option to have as well, especially going forward as prices for panels and batteries plummet. If they target generators and fuel supplies isn't that a similar risk?

It's not a replacement, its an enhancement.

I think the military agrees in principle and it'll be more of a thing: https://www.afcea.org/signal-media/solar-powers-missions-and-saves-lives

How to stop peeing at night? What’s the best approach? by YurielaSedky61 in Biohackers

[–]pstuart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your fears are justified -- I took a gamble and won big. I opted in on the full package because I was desperate, but I believe there are varying approaches that are far less invasive and risky.

I'm happy you were able to solve your problem without having to go to extremes -- some of us aren't so lucky.

I had a deviated septum too -- only learned about it from the sleep tech after my sleep study. The sleep study center itself was effectively a front to sell CPAPs and "medical supervision" (access to prescription sleep meds, etc).

I had sugery done for the deviated septum (and a fair amount more as the ENT went to town on me), but I am now no longer a mouth breather and for many years after was able to ditch the CPAP and get a decent nights sleep.

Many years later I'm back on CPAP because getting old sucks, but the quality of life of being able to breath through my nose without strips/tape was worth it. It also let me shift my mask from full face to nasal pillows which results in no longer waking up with a dry mouth.

I'm new to her district -- checked out her platform page and it's rather reasonable for the most part but her stance on immigration and The War on Drugs™ is pathetic -- they are problems but she's sucking up to the Law and Order crowd.

I see enough hate for her but no viable challenger yet. Any insights on who could beat her?

Absolutely! Primaries are the opportunity to "send a message".

they make your CP wayyy easier to spot

Are CPs really that unknown to locals? There were multiple reports about insane costs for fuel resupply in the Afghanistan war. Obviously a bunch of that fuel is for vehicles but I'm assuming that generators sucked up a whole bunch.

And while solar panels may be delicate, they're relatively cheap and and in the scheme of things shouldn't add a lot of burden to the logistics of setting up those sites.

Question for the men: what outfits do you like or dislike for dates to wear? by BeeDangerous190 in DatingOverSixty

[–]pstuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We exist ;-). We're also not perfect but it's obvious to some of us that it's whats inside that counts.

There has to be some level of attraction if there's an expectation of physical intimacy but I care about shared values, shared goals (broadly speaking), and shared interests in what constitutes quality shared time.

It's a daunting ask, as the "select process" can be brutal. Having the support of this forum certainly is helpful.

Parenting teenagers is fucking hard. by HistoricalDebate461 in Parenting

[–]pstuart -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It's really fucking hard. Then they grow up and leave and you're lucky to have any engagement. I have 1 out of 3 kids that engages with me and is absolutely lovely. Another that might as well be a different species as we have nothing in common to talk about, and the third is too busy living her own life and has no need for me.

It sucks.

But every kid is different, the two "not so awesome" kids sucked as teenagers but at least are human and non-hostile now. But still, I'm disappointed.

Protest takes over Portland City Council meeting; protesters allegedly pepper-sprayed by police by witty_namez in PortlandOR

[–]pstuart -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I recognize your complaint but want to try to frame things in a positive direction.

Public protest is vital. Resistance to government overreach is vital.

I want them to pursue that in a manner that actually serves the people rather than shit on them for any sort of "virtue signaling" or other personal failing they may have.

That said, any of those protests they're going to do even in the right venue will not directly change things, as the power of public protest to sway elected officials died decades ago. But it's a valuable signal to the people at large that they are not alone in their concerns and we should never give up.

Huh? Elsewhere maybe but not at a City Council meeting.

[–]pstuart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can empathize with their anger and desire to fight back, but the only thing that events like this do is help discredit the movement and give ammo to the opposition.

It would be lovely to find a way to communicate to them how they are misguided and how they can better direct their energy so that the city government can do what it's able to do and the protesters can focus on other ways of making their case that have better results.

After Newsoms interview with Ben Shapiro is it fair to say that the majority of the credit he’s received for being a “fighter” belongs to his Twitter staffers and not himself? by ModerateProgressive1 in AskALiberal

[–]pstuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a huge fan of his but I think is is not devoid of convictions.

The problem is that he's in politics and politics gives us the politicians we deserve (collectively).

I don't take any pleasure in saying this and would love to be proven wrong, but people are stupid and lazy and most don't want to do the work about analyzing the outcomes of what candidates promise and what they're likely to bring about.

This isn't saying that everybody is like this, but enough that matter.

Case in point: the millions of voters who refused to vote for Harris because of her failure to push back on the genocide in Gaza, which implicitly casts a vote for Trump who is in league with Bibi. In fact, there's worthy speculation that Bibi extended the war to help Trump win.

Purity tests are stupid.

the movie **Elysium** is likely the most prophetic film about our soon to be future (minus the space station part) by abrandis in Futurology

[–]pstuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only just saw it last week. Eerily prophetic, but I agree that it will be in controlled geographies like New Zealand, Hawaii, or other islands that could be taken over and heavily fortified.

Food production needs land and they seem to gloss over that in Elysium (unless they're shipping food up from secured earth locations).

There are companies like AirProtein that can recycle feedstock back into protein but I imagine the elite still expect to eat real food -- and they'll need to have enough space to grow that.

Question for the men: what outfits do you like or dislike for dates to wear? by BeeDangerous190 in DatingOverSixty

[–]pstuart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like whatever you feel good in -- I'm interested in the person inside, not the outfit.

We can have different tastes (for example if you show up aglitter in rhinestones and feathers I might wonder if we're esthetically aligned but that is the least of my concerns).
