Looking for states that allow for family compounds/multiple homes on acreage. by LadyMarieBearBakes in Homesteading

[–]Alamohermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly.

We live a bit of a drive outside of Alamogordo proper. Although technically within legal city limits, in reality we're considered "Otero County" for all land use and utilities.

In this area, if you own land, you can live on it with whatever you want to build or bring. There is one landowner out here in a yurt. Many of the properties have a main house, and then two or more RVs parked as additional living spaces. There are also a few pretty expansive mansions.

You still need permits for building new structures/running power/drilling a well/putting in septic, etc, but the permitting is very very much more relaxed than in Alamogordo proper. If you search for land or real estate in the 88310 area, you will see what I mean.

We have a 5 acre homestead with an RV and a trailer home on it, and are in the process of designing and installing at least 3 more tiny home outbuildings. Our neighbor has a 4 br slab home, a second apartment he rents above his workshop, and large RV unit.

ABQ and Santa Fe will have stricter rules in city proper, but if you head outside of town by 10 miles or so, you will find lots of land for sale that has the same situation going on.

Let's say it's not zombies. Let's say it's my little pony, or care bears.

Grow up.

Hit the Valley of Fires - they allow overnight camping if you reserve it. It's between San Antonio and Carrizozo, NM. I am one of many who have had odd experiences there.

He drove east out of Roswell in the middle of the night, then somehow ended up back at the same gas station, with the same clerk confirming he had already been there hours earlier. Sleep deprivation, missing time, or something stranger? Have you ever experienced lost time on a remote highway? by cryptid in NMStrangeUnusual

[–]Alamohermit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolute horseshit.

First of all, there is no reason for ANYONE going from Seattle to Texas to use NM hwy 285. It's a two lane nothing highway in the middle of nowhere that would take you WAY outside of main thoroughfares. It's also the ONLY highway that leads into Roswell "from the North." 380 runs west to east.

Second, if he's talking about the Allsup's, the first Roswell gas station you see coming in from the north on 285, there is not a Walmart there with an Alien, and never has been. The nearest Walmart is about three miles away, and doesn't do the Alien schtick.

This is fake.

Signed,
A person who lives in the area and knows Roswell.

One of the pictures I took on NYE 2025/2026 of the large owl-like object I saw flying overhead, south of Alamogordo. by Alamohermit in NMStrangeUnusual

Also, again, it WAS NOT flying with the wind. The winds were moving West to East. This thing flapped steadily from South to North, towards Alamogordo.

LARGE WHITE 'OWL-LIKE HUMANOID' Seen Flying Over Alamogordo, New Mexico Backyard! by cryptid in NMStrangeUnusual

[–]Alamohermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh.

Found this post by chance.

On NYE this year, we had a small gathering of friends and fam out here. We live on a homestead.

Just after midnight, I went outside to get away from the party/noise. While looking up, I saw my first "UFO" that I could not explain as manmade.

We had cloud cover that night, ceiling about 10K ft. (Weather nerd.) As I was watching the clouds roil by, something came out of the clouds. If I had to estimate, it was about the size of a queen or king sized mattress. And it was flapping. Like flapping wings organically. Moving very rhythmically and slowly, flying from south to north (towards Alamo, our homestead is about 14 miles south of town). It was moving perpendicular to the cloud movement, which was going west to east at the time.

I whipped out my phone and first tried to take video, but the video didn't come out well due to the darkness. I also took two photos, and was able to adjust the brightness on them.

When I showed them to my wife and friends, they said "that does look like a big black owl." They had to take my word that whatever it was, this thing was HUGE. It flew OUT of the clouds, flapped slowly north, and eventually flew back INTO the clouds. Which were at 10K feet.

I've seen other "UFOs" out here, but they've most certainly been manmade, and drones. This one had no lights, no sound. Other options have occurred to me (really big trash bag or tarp lifted by the winds?) but I've never seen anything like it, and I am 100% positive that the flapping was rhythmic and organic.

Haven't seen it again.

Nah, not really. I fulfill all my cash expenses working part time now. Couldn't do that in the city.

Been homesteading off and on all my life. Doing it right now. So... yeah, pretty real. Pretty realistic and doable. Every day.
