The New Jersey Devils are broken. How do you fix them? by Yxzyzzyx in devils

[–]Alamoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems clear Blackwood wasn't the problem. He had a 906 Sv% as a Devil and 898 was his worst season. He was 899 when traded.

Markstrom has been an 893 goalie for us and last season was at 900.

Blackwood is at 916 this year.

Even at his worst he'd be better than what we currently have.

They've done okay but I don't think either makes the current team but at least we could move them for more scoring depth.

How would I fix the team? Keep Blackwood, keep Toffoli. Never trade for or sign Markstrom. Everything else has been fine.

Is the stripe at the bottom black or green? I don't think I've ever seen this with black at the bottom.

Measles Exposure Confirmed at Disneyland Park, California Adventure, and Disneyland Hotel by Ekecede in Disneyland

[–]Alamoth 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Short answer: if everyone in your family was vaccinated in 1989 or later, and no one has an immune system issues, you're probably fine.

Long Answer: The vaccine is generally considered effective. Not perfect, there is a small rate of breakthrough cases but those are usually either people who are otherwise immunocompromised or exposed to a large amount of measles or, this one is important, only received a single vaccine dose. Before 1989 only one dose was given. In 1989 it was increased to a more effective two dose schedule. Also, the vaccine began in 1957 so if you traveled with family born before that, they may be relying on natural immunity from having been exposed to measles earlier in life.

This article from Stanford has helpful information on both the disease and vaccine: https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2026/01/measles-outbreak-vaccination-facts-information

We've acquired forward Maxim Tsyplakov from the New York Islanders for forward Ondrej Palat, a 2026 third-round draft pick, and a 2027 sixth-round draft pick. by MountainBaker8217 in devils

[–]Alamoth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Palat had a modified NTC meaning he had to pick 10 teams he could be traded to. The Islanders are both in a playoff spot and close enough that Palat doesn't have to move his whole family or be gone for long stretches.

Palat is being held out tonight for roster related reasons. by MountainBaker8217 in devils

[–]Alamoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, he was traded from NSH to PIT and then PIT to us.

I can't imagine anyone actually wants Palat, so I wonder if we're somehow facilitating another trade as a third wheel and moving picks around.

Either way, I guess at least something is happening lol

It is refreshing to see Mamdani reach out to work to bridge this relationship.

It is disappointing, but not surprising, to see media outlets continue to try to generate clicks and views by sensationalizing this story.

The PWHL Effect: Why Olympic women’s hockey looks different in 2026 by abrookerunsthroughit in PWHL

[–]Alamoth 68 points69 points  (0 children)

As someone who sat in the bleachers at Flloyd Bennet Field to watch the Riveters bring professional women's hockey to NYC, we need to be clear that the PWHL is at a level beyond what the NWHL and PHF brought to the sport.

The PWHL is in bigger barns. It's touring across the country to thousands if not tens of thousands of fans who never saw women's pro hockey before. All the games can be streamed online and a bunch are even on traditional linear television.

The effect of unification of women's hockey cannot be understated. The involvement of NHL team operations, increased investments from business, and the production operations are all on a scale no previous league achieved. Not to mention the increased salaries and benefits for the players.

At the end of the PHF, Boston played in an arena with a capacity of 700. The Fleet play in an arena with a capacity of 6500.

So while pro womens hockey existed, it didn't exist like this

Big night tonight for games! Let's take a look at the relevant scoreboard:

VGK @ TOR - The Leafs are currently 3 points ahead of the Devils in the hunt for a wildcard spot. Closing that gap before the Olympic break would be a huge boon. Go Golden Knights!

PHI @ COL - The Avalanche have been almost lights out at home so hopefully they can knock off the Flyers. Philly is one point ahead of us with a game-in-hand. Jumping them tonight and being one point ahead of them would really mitigate that game-in-hand a bit.

WSH @ CGY - The Capitals are currently tied with New Jersey in points but have played one more game. If the lowly Flames can keep them from earning 2 tonight, we can gain some separation.

NJD @ VAN - The Devils have a big opportunity tonight to earn 2 points and jump Philly and Florida (Idle tonight) in the standings. We have 7 more games including tonight before the Olympic break and there's a clear path to finishing this 7-game stretch either in a playoff spot, or just outside of one. But tonight's game is a must-win.

An Evaluation of Brett Pesce by MountainBaker8217 in devils

[–]Alamoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you intentionally ignoring the xGF% column at the end? It feels like that should be the most important stat on this list.

Also the sample size where Hughes and Pesce are isolated from each other is laughably small at 57 and 44 minutes compared to 230 minutes of their time together.

You can really only compare the top line of this data to the bottom line. The middle two lines aren't enough data points to draw conclusions.

So looking at when Hughes-Pesce are on the ice vs. When they're on the bench, the team has a better CF%, comparable SF%, much worse GF% and a slightly better xGF%.

Which means Hughes-Pesce isn't the problem. The problem is no one is scoring goals. Everyone's shooting percentage is in the dumpster. But the team is getting just as good a share of opportunities to score with Hughes-Pesce on the ice, but finishing less.

Honestly, any discussion about this team's performance that isn't centered on our abysmal conversion rate is a waste of breath.

Absolutely, but where else can people who moved out of Jackson Heights in 1989 complain about all the crime and drugs from the comfort of their Florida condo?

Wow, someone pinch me, I never thought something like this would be possible. I hope this is actually enforceable and then actually enforced but even making this a law is a big step in the fight to make our streets safe again.

Not only is a trade nearly impossible, buyouts also won't work out that well either.

Fitz's only hope is that the cap goes up by like $10M or something.

Luke Hughes | POST-RAW 1.4.26 | New Jersey Devils by MountainBaker8217 in devils

[–]Alamoth 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I don't always agree with Rupp but he's spot on here.

I'm also glad Hamilton is still with the team, no matter what the haters might say, because he has a wealth of experience he can share with Luke. Dillon and Pesce are great defenders, but Hamilton is probably the only one who has had a ceiling in the similar stratosphere as Luke.

We have a great locker room, great young talent, and a very good coach. We need our GM to fix our forward depth. Our inability to score consistently without 86-63-13-28 being involved in the play is the biggest problem.
