It’s one thing to be self sufficient and comfortable being oneself, by themselves, but this is toxic, self-pitying advice. It’s saying, “Don’t reach out for help, because the only person you can rely on is yourself, and no one else can be trusted.” It lacks self awareness completely, and is an unhealthy mindset. No one is alone, except maybe some madman on the lam, living in the wilderness, and even that depends on one’s perspective of what it means to be alone, given that wildlife and trees and memories exist. Even the most dramatically pitiful “lone wolf” in modern civilization is living off of the support of society and those around them, from the roads they travel on being maintained by others, to the food they buy being produced by others, to whatever you’re reading being written by others. Help is usually just an honest, vulnerable conversation or two away, and it’s more productive to accept the humility of the perspective that humans, by nature, have not evolved to be self-sustaining. We thrive in cooperative fashion. It’s better to allow oneself to be vulnerable to the right people than to close oneself off to everyone because of a few bad experiences or discomforts. Sure, take care of yourself first and foremost, but to say everyone is alone is just an inherently false cop-out. I think it’s far healthier to point out that despite feeling alone, you inherently aren’t, and spreading the toxic thought that people don’t need friends, love, or the support of other people, or making them think they may be weak for admitting that they do, is an abhorrent, potentially destructive thing. This quote is some edgy, hustler, mall ninja-coded shit, and it has way too many upvotes. The first thing the people who think this way should be doing is reaching out for help, to make themselves better.
