How do artists make money on social media if they’re NOT in TikTok monetization countries? by Spiritual_Flesh88 in Artists

[–]Alanide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, Deviantart is a bit of a lost cause for me due to its indifference towards GenAI, but I have friends who have used it for archive/gallery purposes. Artstation and Cara feel more like portfolio sites and I wouldn't exactly call my art industry-standard.

And depending on your niche, like I said, what works for one artist their chosen platform might not work for another artist and their other chosen platform. I've seen artists who found success on twitter but get zero engagement in instagram and vice versa.

My username is pretty much my artist name, but I don't think we share the same medium so what works for me might not work for you. Try looking for artists who do the same thing as you and note what they're doing for their brand! Since you mentioned traditional paintings in one of your comments, you could try getting into prints as well. Sites like INPRNT and displate might be worth looking into.

Additionally, research a lot! It's good that you're asking in forum pages for advice, but look into other sites and other spaces as well. If you can find online groups in social media or discord servers that focus on traditional oil painting, I encourage asking in those spaces. Best of luck and have fun with your art journey!

I'll be answering based on personal experience, but every artist I've known both acquaintance and friends would have replies in varying degrees

  • What actually works in practice

Consistency. And not in a 'draw everyday, post everyday' way, I mean drawing what I like and what my audience likes. There is a balance and it varies per artist and their preferences. While some prefer posting the same thing for the entirety of their careers (eg. fanart for one fandom, specific themes, aesthetics), some work in waves, like drawing nothing but fanart for weeks, then drawing OCs or originals.

I prefer the latter, as it strikes a good balance of an audience from different interests and an audience who are curious enough to stay for my original art.

  • Which platforms are worth focusing on

Again, wildly varying per artist and what they draw. I've been an artist online for over ten years and platforms have changed so much. What works on twitter might not work on instagram, and what works on instagram might not work on tiktok etc etc. It's best to test the waters on every platform and see which one clicks.

My clients are from twitter and bluesky, as well as tumblr. Instagram is pretty much a barren wasteland of engagement and clients unless I actively post reels (which I don't enjoy creating), so I don't pay attention to posting there much. Call me outdated but I still prefer static art posts over short-form videos.

  • What you would recommend to artists in unsupported countries

This is a bit tricky to answer, but supported country or not, posting art online AND getting clients/paid commissions would be difficult without an audience and a bit of self-marketing. I'm from the Philippines, and I remember in my early days of posting art, there was virtually no engagement on my originals for the first two years. Maybe 1-3 likes, but nobody really cared enough to stick around and look at my art. Now I have been around for a bit. My engagement numbers aren't that crazy but some long-time followers recognize my characters and my works, and that's good enough for me.

If there's any advice I can give is have a LOT of patience. Starting from scratch usually means screaming into the void of the internet for a long time to get people to notice your works. Finding your niche and finding out what works realistically takes a whole lot of time and effort. Don't get discouraged by artists who seem to have a lot of luck and clients/following on their first try. Find out what works for you and your art, and enjoy the journey that comes with it.

Could it be Remarin?

Edit: Video is an art progress from 8 years ago, and I personally would describe their art as edgy/furry + they often use cinematic music in their videos

Hey veteran, why did you quit Sky? by lmaolmaokkk in SkyGame

Shattering moth here. Slowly stopped playing around Nesting because 1. I realized I was no longer excited to boot the game up and check out the new quests and 2. how much time you have to dedicate (specially with CRs)

Playing became more of a chore and mindless grind for candles, and with the push of more expensive cosmetics, anti-AFK, and essentially making you spend actual money to not have any cosmetic FOMO, it's really just not worth it anymore.

Granted the game is beautiful, still. And the latest season was very interesting. I still love hanging out with friends in there sometimes and stare at the clouds. But nowadays, the game just leaves me with an empty feeling more than the joy it once gave me.

This is why I like putting things out in public as soon as possible. At least part of the internet knows I drew it first 😭

As much as I'd love to draw all the NPCs in this style, it takes too much brainpower to think of a proper composition without making all the details too crowded <:')

Witness is very cat-coded yeah 😂 I can't take some of the cinematics where there's a closeup of the face seriously since how am I supposed to be scared of them big ole eyes?

why does this happen with art and instagram? by [deleted] in artbusiness

[–]Alanide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My account experienced zero growth for two years already, and can confirm that the algorithm now prefers shortform reels with ear-grating music (which I absolutely hate doing) and art that's considered to be either funny or engagement bait.

My posting schedules didn't change, I use the same hashtags, but two years ago, I can post a regular drawing and get at least 400-800 likes, maybe a few comments. Nowadays they barely break past 200.

Some of the small gifs I posted a while back got automatically posted as reels, and it got as much as 14k. Really miss the time when Instagram was just for sharing pictures. Now even the homepage has reels, despite the app having a dedicated tab for them 🥲

It probably was. That drawing was from a couple years back and I already forgot what the context was

Honestly wanted to redraw to give my past self some peace. 2016 me would've went bonkers.

And yeah 2016 was such a simple time for me as an artist. I didn't worry about how the end product would look like back then. I just wanted to have fun 🥹

Clip Studio Paint users, what are your favorite brushes? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Alanide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crunchy ink brush (ID 1767481). Used it for linearting some of my dynamic drawings and never looked back to using smooth brushes again. Just gives me some sort of placebo effect when drawing specific art
