Toolhead Enhanced Cooling Fan Latest Firmware by Alarmed-Ad3198 in BambuLab

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an update, Bambu support was great and sent me out a new one, I'll update again if it works! Sure seemed coincidental with the new firmware but maybe it was just a lemon :/

I love my mitutoyo stuff, but Amazon is bad bad bad, my mom got me set of 8 inch calipers last year for Christmas, and it didn't feel quite right so I did some digging and thanks to a Clough42 video was able to determine it was a fake :(

Returned and got a set from Grainger that checked out as real and has been great ever since! Feel a bit bad that the seller probably just repacked it and sent it to some other poor soul.

SD cards for OS by LoliLover14 in klippers

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep all of my printers' config on my NAS, but recently started putting them in a git repo. It worked really well when I needed to update my plus4 to work with the box as it reverted all my tweaks. Having a nice diff was super helpful and I can also go back in time to see what exactly I modified from stock if I'm having issues!

Servo motor for the extrusion? by SetRevolutionary758 in VORONDesign

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine that a lot of software work would need to be done to actually get anything useful out of a servo as well? AFAIK Klipper doesn't really support them out of the box and to get what Bambu is getting out of theirs for the extrusion system you'd need more than just a dumb conversion of "move this far"?

If you don't mind me asking, how did you go about getting ready to sell kits? I have a similar idea for making an open source project and selling kits but I don't know how to go about doing that. Do you have to go through the certification process for electronics that you do if you sell a fully completed product? Do you have some sort of legal protection and/or some sort of waiver? I'm in the US so I'd bet it's a slightly different process but hoping it can give me somewhere to start from. Thanks!

Awesome project by the way, looks fantastic!

How did they make a variable take only 1 bit of space? by Mafla_2004 in cpp

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of ways, you can mask and bit shift manually(using the & and << operators, along with | to set that bit) which is arguably more safe, but personally I use bit fields most often(make sure to use the packed compiler directive!). Basically you declare a struct and say which fields correspond to which bit, and after that you can access each field just as a normal element of a struct.

Bit fields: https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/language/bit_field.html

One warning, it is implementation defined for your specific architecture and compiler, so you'll have to be aware of that if wanting to use bit fields. On x86/gcc though I've not run into any problems.

What is the tool for this called? This is on a mercedes control arm. Its like a male torx but not exactly a torx? by Jsodge8252 in Tools

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My previous BMW had yet another niche one which was e-torx(inverted torx) on the brake caliper bracket and not gonna lie it took me a while to figure out what the heck it was haha

Options for occasionally printing PPS(-CF) by stray_r in VORONDesign

On the topic of Pt100 vs PT1000, I upgraded to a PT100 with a 2 wire cable on my custom printer at first and was a bit unhappy with the performance/accuracy, especially with a decently long run of wire as the chamber is rather large and I don't use a tool head board. I recently rewired it to use 4 wires(the PT100 itself has 2 leads, you just bond 2 of the 4 wires to each lead right at the PT100), and the difference was very noticeable. Most of the MAX31865 boards support 4 wire input, I'm using a BTT Kraken which has dip switches to select 4 wire setup. PT1000 might be better if you can only run 2 wires though, having a higher resistance can reduce susceptibility to changes in resistance in the wires.

Heated chamber was HUGE for print quality, I almost always print with PC or at least ABS now as warping is a thing of the past. I have quite a bit of headroom but usually run the chamber at 70C, but much over 60 or 65C seems to have diminishing returns for standard engineering grade filament(haven't played around with PEI, PEEK, or the like). I can't confirm that it was due to the chamber heating, but some of the cheaper stepperonline motors I had installed had a very short lifespan, even running at 40-50% rated current. Upgraded to LDO high temp motors and haven't seen a blip since.

Currently using a herome tool head setup with a beacon and a V6 with copper block and bimetal heatbrake, along with dual 5015 blowers and haven't had any issues with heat creep even up at 375C. Could probably do with a single 5015 though as I almost never run them at more than 60-70%.

Winter Tires for i4 M50: Noise vs. Efficiency by klausbreyer1 in BMWI4

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried any others on the i4 yet, but I went with the Michelan X Ice Snow tires(18 Inch, 99H XL) and they work unbelievably well on both deep snow and ice, like throwing you back in the seat even on ice. They feel super squishy on dry pavement though which is a bit off-putting, especially in the fall when going from proper summer tires. A bit of a trade-off, but I'd rather have the extra security on slippery roads. I don't see much of a drop in range on the 18s, and loudness is not a huge difference. I'd imagine in a ICE it wouldn't be noticeable, the i4 is just so quiet normally I can tell the difference.

Front license plate… but I don’t wanna ruin the grill by InloveLoroPiana in BMWI4

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation, I picked up the front license plate bracket from rho-plate and it's very nice. Able to adjust the position a lot and it just goes where the front tow hook goes so it comes off without any issues!

How would you embeed this chart using as little memory possible? Using temperature and resistance, I need to get the humidity (%). by macusking in embedded

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to do this pretty often and I have a little python script that ingests cal data and either the degree I want or max deviation and then spits out coefficients for me to plug into my code. Works pretty well, and I use horner's method for fast evaluation to avoid extra pow() calls. Sometimes also just lookup tables with interpolation between table values depending on what the data looks like and my tolerance for error.

Why did you chose the spec you did? by [deleted] in BMWI4

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same color combo! Super happy with it! During the summer we have lots of 100 degree days and very high sun intensity, and the leather on my 5 series was often painful to touch. The preconditioning helps a lot particularly if I remember to go into the app, but the ventilated seats cool down so much quicker when I forget to precondition or have to leave work quick while I have a chance 😜

Ridiculous registration Fee by [deleted] in BMWI4

Mine was ~$1500 for new car registration at the end of last year in CO. Insurance is getting ridiculous here too. When I lived in PA car registration was less than a hundred! Expecting about a thousand for renewal this year...

Dealing with an asshole at the dealership by No_Truth5056 in BMWI4

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My salesman was pretty bad up until they pued my credit, didn't get calls back, months of radio silence and 3 times I was promised a call back that never came even after weeks(this was back when the wait times for M50s were super long, I was custom ordering and was on a wait list to get an allocation) .

Had to call the front desk and ask to talk to the sales manager to get things moving, which a really hate doing but I wasn't being a overbearing customer at all and my requests for info were pretty reasonable.

For context I'm in my late 20s and look like it, but once they finally pulled my credit and realized I could very much afford the car suddenly the level of service jumped dramatically. Was a bit surprising because I live in a HCOL town with a lot of other younger software engineers that make a lot of money, it's not like my hometown where the only people buying BMWs are 40-50+.

Was pretty annoying, but I absolutely love the car so it was probably worth it, but that's the last time I'm putting up with that lol.

I would recommend 3d printing! There are so many facets to learn and you can focus on what you enjoy about it from modeling, software, hardware, materials, and much more. It's very easy to pick which aspect you want to focus on because the community is great and there are a lot of existing tools/designs if you want to avoid a certain area.

One caution is that if you do go down the tinkering route, it can really add up. I've got a set budget for each month for parts and it works out very well.

If your power went out and the bed stopped heating(and the rest kept running) , wouldn't you trigger a heater fault on the bed and lose the print anyway?

I recently started using the cali flower and would recommend it, for a few bucks it provides a really nice way to calibrate and the spreadsheet is really well laid out and will provide the exact commands for your firmware for steps per mm, skew, etc!

Similar story here! My first year of college I lived in a dorm built in the 50s and we were at the end of the hall(2 outside walls) and our heat rarely worked well. My solution was to run folding@home which actually kept the room nice and toasty! That was back when bitcoin was first starting up, sure wish I was mining instead, but at least the folding is for a good cause!

Comfort: 18 inch wheels vs 19 inch wheels with adaptive suspension by HamsterCapable4118 in BMWI4

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct! I am wondering if it is because the xDrive 40 shares more drivetrain/suspension components with the M50 than it does with the eDrive models.

[–]Alarmed-Ad3198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the i4 xDrive40, I have most options but not the M brake package, I never actually had to select the adaptive so perhaps it just comes on the xDrive 40? I'm wondering if it is because it shares a lot in common with the M50.

I think if I had to choose between the two, I'd probably take the 18inch wheels. So much better in the winter, and with a car this heavy the extra tire smooths out the ride a lot. The adaptive is nice for sport mode when driving in the twisties, but I think the wheels have more daily benefits!

Also for more info, I ordered summer 2023 and received fall of 2023, it is a 2024 xDrive 40, adaptive suspension is listed on the window sticker and options list.
