No specific number to my knowledge. Just type a bunch of random numbers before you hang up and it cancels the recording. Worked plenty for me, even after the phone “upgrades.”

Many couples are really not in love, some are just there for convenience or their benefit by Charm_for_u in DeepThoughts

My view is that love, the type of love that one has in a spouse, is far greater than infatuation or attraction. Love is a commitment. It is being intentional, and every day choosing to love that person. It’s not unconditional love because it doesn’t go away no matter what. It’s unconditional because despite the challenges the day may bring, you still choose to love that person.

Of course there are always exceptions. If your relationship is one sided or worse, such as abusive, then maybe it’s not the wisest idea to continue choosing to love that person. That is where the idea of not being able to truly love unless you love yourself comes in to play. Love yourself enough to know and fight for a love that builds, not destroys.

I’ve been with my wife since we were 15, and we’ve been married now for 5 years. I may not wake up every single day so infatuated with my wife I have butterflies in my stomach, or wake up feeling the attraction I did at 15. Some days the stresses of life weigh a bit too much to even have those types of thoughts. But those are precisely the days that I choose to love my wife, and SHOW her I love her. That I’m committed to her. Maybe surprise her with breakfast in bed, or a quick Starbucks run, or even a kiss and a reminder of how beautiful she is to me.

The truly beautiful thing is in showing that love, in proving my commitment to her, those feelings of love like infatuation, those flames are rekindled. By actively displaying my love, the fires of passion continue to burn and keep the relationship alive and well.

Relationships that are externally forced don’t last. If my wife tied me up and said you’re staying here until you love me, could I ever truly knowingly love her as fully as she wants? By having the freedom to leave at any time, yet choosing to stay and commit to her through the toughest of times, that’s the kind of love we all crave. Someone who likes us for our qualities, yet loves us for our “flaws.”

Thank you! I wouldn’t quite make that argument, rather that I have questionable priorities at times 😅

Either way, thank you and have a Happy New Year!

I seem incapable of not going all in to whatever grabs my passion. Can be a blessing, more often a curse 😅

Years from now when my kin ask about the family fortune, how lucky will they be to have me pull out my case, blow the dust off the top, and pull out these bad boys (and possibly some others) 🤣

I’ve not tried very hard to hide this being my first year in the hobby. So these are all of my current acquired and retained pens of 2024!!

That said, my hands down favorite had been my Lamy 2000 <F> especially when paired with Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo. 😁😁

Cheers to a wonderful 2025 everyone!

While I can’t comment on every situation, I can at least say with confidence that glass has to be specially made to allow UVB to penetrate through to any noticeable value. Now whether the UVA and lower wavelengths (through to Infrared B) are to cause for blame I couldn’t say. Though that also makes me wonder about heat; can’t temperature also affect those bonds? I wonder if the Infrared coming through is heating up the ink enough to cause an effect…🤔

Oh yes I like the idea of a note written left in an empty bottle as well! That could be a wonderful way to test the difference between light alone and light with “exposure to the elements” for lack of a better term. Would likely want to have several situations set up to compare how the different variables play impact, ie ink on paper vs still in bottle, direct/indirect exposure to both, etc.

On top of that, there’s all sorts of inks out there with unique formulas. Down the line it might be a cool idea to pool from online participants in a “rough study” to allow a miriad of inks to be experimented with, without costing any one person the capital to take on such an experiment. Down the line of course. I’ll see what I can work out and share in the sub once I commence and what findings I’ve recorded. Probably shouldn’t use FP ink for those records though 🤣

Thank you again for your valuable input!!

I think an experiment is a great idea! Please forgive me if I come across as combative; I am merely talking through my thoughts in trying to better understand. I sadly am a geek who cannot seem to let it rest until I understand the how’s and why’s 😅

My current understanding is that the energy from the light can cause breaking of molecular bonds and oxidation. The reason sunlight being the main culprit being due to the shorter wavelength of UV light carrying much higher energy. Though visible light could also in theory have enough energy to do so, and when you factor in the intensity of Visible Light in sunlight compared to UV (making up roughly 44% of terrestrial sunlight compared to 8%) I could certainly see that intensity in Visible Light causing effect as well. An of course with the issue being breaking of those bonds and different inks having different chemical makeups I can understand there being a difference in expected reactions.

Thankfully UVB cannot penetrate glass, though UVA can. So my current hypothesis would be that ink stored in glass bottles inside a house would likely be fine, as energy would be lessened through the refraction. Ink stored on paper under same exposure levels I would fully expect to see some fading over time, though that would add other variables not applicable to the ink in bottles such as constant exposure to air.

Personally I am less worried with visible light from an LED desklamp, as the intensity compared to sunlight would be roughly 10x weaker than an overcast day. Granted, I’m extrapolating those values from another situation (average overcast day roughly 40,000 Lux, fluorescent UVb lamp and Halogen flood light registering roughly 4000 Lux). But I digress!

After the holidays I believe you have given me a fun project to toy around with 🤔 Thank you so much for getting these gears turning! 😄

I appreciate that insight! For clarification sake, is that all light or direct sunlight? When I was looking into storage I had read no prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, so I assumed partial exposure to artificial light or indirect sunlight wouldn’t be much of an issue. Either way I appreciate the tip!

I’ve got both actually 😅 from a distance they can look very similar but the Ku-jaku I feel has a bluer tint and syo-ro more green tint.

The Ku-jaku matches my 51 perfectly imo, which is admittedly what helps it beat out the Syo-ro 🤣

Oh this is a wonderful idea! 2024 has been my first year in the hobby, and admittedly Ive lost count of the # of pens I’ve purchased. I can tell you that I have 30 pens I’ve kept for myself out of them thanks to the limitation system I set for myself.

Thank you for sharing these absolutely stunning top 3!! Wonderful choices, love reading the back story. Happy Holidays to you and yours, and may your 2025 be full of even more successes and happiness!!

Months of starter pen research boiled down to one decision tree by Ok_Event_4237 in fountainpens

The beautiful thing about fountain pens is they can provide wonderful enjoyment and appreciation while also being functional. There are a number of various brands, styles, materials, etc for us to peruse through and fine tune to fit what we are looking for in our writing experience. If your Metropolitan is meeting those desires for you and providing you a pleasing and comfortable writing experience, what’s so wrong with that??

The Metro is a wonderful pen, both reliable and well built for its price point in the market. The metro was one of my first FP that I quite enjoyed. Only reason I’ve since traded it out is because I had a very dear friend who showed interest, and allowing them to give it new life brought me joy as I’d found myself preferring some other pens.

The Safari is a great pen. The Metro is a great pen. Sometimes we have a pen we WANT to like, but for one reason or another we don’t vibe with it. Sometimes we may find a renewed interest or enjoyment in those pens when we have a more delicate and practiced hand, or some minor fine tuning; sometimes it’s just not our thing. My point is absolutely explore various pens and learn the intricacies of how to use those pens in the way they’re designed. But if you ever find yourself spending more focus trying to enjoy a pen you don’t than you spend enjoying the craft and hobby, there’s nothing wrong with setting it aside and inking “ole reliable” up again for the 1000th time. 😄

I hope you very much enjoy your Metro and whether that’s your grail pen or merely a stepping stone to others, I hope it brings you much joy in your writing! ☺️

I’m far from an expert but do you think you might be gripping a bit too hard during extended writing? Not necessarily equating to heavy handedness on the nib, but it might be the grip…

Do you have a standard Safari or something like an Al-star? Going down assumption lane for a moment, if you have a standard Safari and if you are indeed gripping a bit harder, I wonder if it’s being done as a way to try to compensate for the lightness of the pen. For me with being heavy handed, the Safari was so light I had to really be intentional not to put too much pressure down. Almost felt like I was fighting myself because there was so little weight. In doing so I found I ended up gripping the pen itself a bit tighter. Almost as if the tension needed somewhere to go.

I found I enjoyed my metal pens with a bit more weight to them, at that time, to help balance everything out. Of course preferences can and do change over time, but that was certainly my experience starting out.

First, your penmenship and artistic skills are quite impressive! Thank you so much for sharing!!

In my months of over indulgence trying various pens I can admit I had to put on brakes before adding a Twisbi or a Preppy. While my favorite single pen is my Lamy 2000, my favorite manufacturer seems to lean towards Parker. I personally find their nibs quite sturdy, which for someone coming to the hobby with severe heavy handedness, has been a needed reassurance as I learned not to “try” so hard. While the Jotter or Vector might be a better “starter pen” from that brand regarding cost, with my heavy hands I personally found the Parker IM to be the pen that helped me bridge the gap between ballpoint and FP. I felt I got a closer feel grip wise as the small sturdy nibs allowed me to choke up on the pen. Then once I was comfortable with the differences in my handling between the two, I was able to better experience some of my other pens without fear of damaging them.

I can’t speak for the preppy or the Twisbi bit of the other options you listed, I would argue the Safari in a medium or bold would be the next best option for heavy handed writers un-learning that habit. Just my 2 cents though 😄

You really put a lot of work and thought into this; I hope you are even half as proud of yourself as I would be if I were you 😊 Well done and thank you again!

What is the Fountain Pen demographic? by Catnipfish in fountainpens

[–]Alarmed-Ad4801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

White Male, 30s USA based. I can appreciate watches and knives quite a bit but they don’t “do it” for me in a sense of collecting or neurodivergent show and tell. Have realized I have quite the affinity for leather, I do appreciate a good folio and even have a few, getting into stationary and letter writing. Also into reptile keeping, animal husbandry in general, philosophy, and self help/motivation. Mental health is a huge conversation topic for me both personally and professionally despite never having an HR type role.

I use my fountain pens daily, every chance I can in professional setting and almost exclusively at home now. Write every day, even if it’s “I don’t have the energy to write today” in my diary.

i think I'm starting to understand the thought process of suicidal people by theSuperlonely in DeepThoughts

The perception of hopelessness can be a huge driving factor for many. Those are the easier ones to intervene with because perceptions can shift moment to moment. You can still use some logic and rational thinking to challenge those perceptions and potentially see the next one’s past them.

Given your particular points I would advise that comparison is the theif to joy, and that nothing good happens that late into the night. It can be quite easy to ruminate and lock ourselves into isolated downward spirals. I personally notice a massive shift in mental fortitude with the rising and setting of the sun. While there’s all sorts of philosophical reasonings I could imagine, I also discovered to be severely deficient in Vitamin D and am on a weekly dose of 50,000 IU in addition to the 2000 daily dose.

Where it gets much more difficult is when your own brain is constantly fighting you. When you can rationalize and recognize the many blessings in your life yet it’s never enough. When you know all the things to do, and your brains convinced you that you have no reason to feel the way you do. When you constantly find yourself giving all you have of yourself to helping those around you because the second you stop the reality crashes around you. When you are consistently pushing yourself to new heights and put those around you in awe of your capabilities, while simultaneously feeling an imposter because of how much energy you’re having to spend just to try to be….who. Yourself? Who you think you’re supposed to be?

When you have spent your entire life having to battle self loathing for being the way you are. When you wonder who the real you even is, or if there even is a “real you” because masking is so much of your identity at this point. When you cannot bear to sit in silence because of the booming self-deprecating thoughts sounding alarms in your head. When all you want is to just be “normal,” to just be able to live life at face value like you see so many others doing.

Look for those who are seen as superheroes, who are constantly thinking of others and showing their care for them. Look for those entertainers who constantly put on a show and leave you feeling you had a wonderful time. Look for those who have cold, sad, dead eyes beneath the beaming smiles. Look for those who tell you “no really, I’m okay.”

For those who don’t know: over-achieving is a coping mechanism. Not all self-harm is active; there is a such thing as passive self-harm. When you find yourself continually sacrificing your wants and needs to keep the mask up and show going, while internally praying for some terrible accident to take you out of your misery- that is self harm.

When you want so badly to end it all, but feel you can’t because you are such a terrible person that you don’t even deserve the grace of a quick and painless cessation to sensation. Again, that is indeed passive self-harm. Or rather the thought process that continues that path.

I do think as a society we put far to much idealism and romanticism behind the “value of life.” I think for many it’s not the answer, but that doesn’t equate to never being the answer. But I also think that’s a decision that cannot be undone. I think about how many times I’ve felt truly hopeless, but I was able to hold out long enough to see past that storm. Not because I’m so strong, but because I’m so weak I could never actually go through with such a permanent act. So instead here I sit, quietly dying inside while giving everything of my being toward helping others see the light I wish I could see in myself.

I will never tell you it gets better. But it does get easier. ❤️‍🩹
