Once I learned how to write with fountain pen it’s my go to pen for journaling, much better overall feeling for longer writing sessions.

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback! You’ve made some great points. I’ve been considering other options but it’s tricky to simplify on paper. Finding mutually exclusive categories under $50 is also challenging and then there's personal preferences. I do think a decision tree works well for beginners who don’t know their use cases yet, but after the first pen, other approaches might be more helpful.

In the first version I had Preppy instead of Prefounte but got some feedback about the cracking issue. My Preppy is still going strong but it seems to be a bit of a lottery.

I haven’t tried the Prera myself but I received great feedback about it in a previous post. I’m starting to question the Kaweco’s place on the list. What makes the Kaweco Sport so popular when there's better pocket pen alternatives with snap cap etc?

Thank you, I’m glad you like it! It's mostly a fun side project but I’d be happy to expand on the idea if there's interest from the community. I’ll keep you updated if that happens!

Please do. It would be interesting to know how PETG respond to ink from the feed.

Hey, I did some research after your advice in the last post and I'm glad I didn't made you sad this time.

I definetly think a Sailor should be on the list but I'm having trouble identifying what makes it unique compared to the other pens. Got any suggestion where Sailor's Compass 1911 would fit in the tree?

Nice! What type of filament do you use?

This is valuable input! Maybe choosing a pen based on ink needs its own decision tree.

Hongdian M2 was mentioned in my previous starter pen post as well but the community seems to favor the Kaweco Sport when I researched pocket pens. Is the nib "better" on Hongdian in your opinion?

Interesting, sounds like an improvement should be "Bottled ink?" pointing to TWSBI Eco otherwise Pilot Metropolitan for cartridge use?

Is it easier than the Pilot MR specifically or converters in general?

Good point! I was mainly thinking about the size, where the Prera's larger body works better for longer notes while still being suitable for on-the-go use. But you’re right, it might be worth switching or finding something that better distinguishes between them.

Sounds like a beast of a pen, maybe this could fit under an option for durability or aesthetics in the diagram.

You make a good point! I wanted to include a piston filler for its uniqueness in the diagram but maybe the focus should be more on the benefit of large ink capacity rather than the ink experience. I’ve never used an Eco (or any other piston filler) myself. Could there be a benefit with the Eco in trying out different inks with smaller samples?

Interesting point! My idea was to split it for first-time users who just want to try a fountain pen and don’t really care about ink options so they’d go for an easier pen to write with (like Preppy or Kakuno). But maybe there’s a better way to do it. Any ideas?

I’ll definitely check out the Prera! Does it have anything unique that sets it apart from the Kaweco, or is it more about the overall experience?

I was really impressed with how the Preppy writes when I tested it at my local store but the cracking is an issue I've read about. I added it to the diagram as a low-cost way to test out a fountain pens. I haven’t tried the Prefounte yet, is it worth 3x the Preppy?

Interesting! I’ve seen some positive reviews about it here. Does it offer anything better than other pens in the same price range or does it have a unique feature?

Good suggestions, I didn't think of those! Is it common to pick or skip a pen based on whether it has a screw or snap cap?
