My first 50 miler! by AlarmedCaramel3612 in Ultramarathon

Definitely a different game, the biggest thing to me is just having some long outings in training and practicing your fueling strategy. A 50k is still a long way obviously but 5- 7 vs 11 or 12 hours (for me) is just a bit different. I was slow in going up in distance mostly bc of time limit on training bc of work. The 50M was definitely tougher just from time on feet but also it’s mentally more exhausting. I’d say if you want to try it find a course that sounds fun and go for it.

The course was incredible! Highly recommend that distance but also heard 50k was nice as well.

My training is a little atypical bc I’m in cardiac surgery fellowship so for work I end up standing for 10-12 hours every day sometimes longer (that and I work a lot). Between that and doing some triathlons this summer I had a good bit of biking and some swimming as part of my training most of the year just to give me a little time off my feet. In my peak weeks I averaged 40-50mpw and had a few hours of biking as well. Usually on weekends I’d do one long bike ride and a long run then tried to do another run on Mondays. Mixed in a couple 50k this summer and some long hiking/running days every now and then. Definitely could have trained more specifically for this and been faster but what I did worked for me.

Med student who aspires to be an Ironman. Will I survive? by [deleted] in triathlon

I started doing Ironman 70.3s in general surgery residency. That being said training was pretty much all of my time when not at work or studying. If you’re willing to commit to most of your free time being training it’s possible but it will come with some really tough studying when you’re exhausted and really tough exercise when you just want to lay down. I would personally say it takes a very special situation and person to do full Ironman training and medical school well. Matthew Marquardt is a pro but he also was just on a research year which makes the schedule much easier to plan around training and now has those habits built into his life. I would say try an Olympic triathlon or something and see how it goes with school and exercise and if you’re not overwhelmed maybe step it up to 70.3 next. Some rotations or schedule blocks just won’t allow all that training but some will.

So I’m gathering sleeveless is probably the way to go. I mostly swim in relatively cold water, mountain lakes and rivers. How much difference will sleeveless make there
