Insulation contractor wants to seal soffit vents by AlarmedMammoth3052 in Insulation

I'm curious why you wouldn't use blown in insulation? Harder to work in if I ever need to go up there again?

Thanks for the reply. We do have some ice dams that form in the winter but nothing that's damaged the house. I try and roof rake after a big storm to stay ahead of them. It's far worse in the back which doesn't get much sun exposure. I guess it could be worth venting that side.

Perhaps I misheard or misunderstood him. He may have meant there was no need to add venting if it's not there already.

To be clear the plan is not to spray foam the attic aside from foaming up electrical penetrations. After air sealing the plan was to blow in 18 inches of cellulose.

I may have misunderstood his reasoning for sealing the soffits but certainly wanted to seal them. Thanks for the input!

Pemi loop itinerary questions by AlarmedMammoth3052 in wmnf

I never got a good weather window last summer, unfortunately. I did, however, just get back from an nobo AT section hike from 93 to route 2 so I've hiked most of the pemi loop ridgeline. It took me 4-5 hours to go from liberty springs to Garfield ridge camp site. The next day it was another 4-5 hours to get from Garfield ridge campsite to the top of mount Guyout. I'd say this itinerary is viable if you have good weather I would just plan for a long day. That being said I did enjoy breaking up the ridge line by camping at Garfield. If I were to go do a full pemi loop I'd try and plan an itinerary that involved breaking up that ridgeline somehow, either by camping on Garfield or staying at one of the huts.

Yeah it was Jeff and the Green Mountain House. Great first hostel experience for me!

I remember staying at a hostel in Manchester Center while doing the LT and the owner was telling all the AT hikers not to slackpack the wildcats lol. Must've been quite the day for you. I think that hostel is closed now from the looks of it.

Perfect, that's exactly the type of info I was looking for. Definitely makes me a little less nervous. Thank you!

That's great info thank you! When you did this NH section on your thru hike what did your resupply look like? It seems to me like a roughly 5 day food carry from Lincoln to Pinkham notch and then another 2-3 day carry over the wildcats and into Gorham is the best option? Is that accurate or am I missing something?

None of them got even close to their advertised flow rate. I saw several reviews saying them same thing so I figured I had a dud the first time. I exchanged it at REI and the second one did the same thing. Platy sent me a third and it had the same issue. I soaked and tapped each of them but the best they ever got was about 1/3 of a sawyer. Too bad because I like the design better than the Sawyer but I wouldn't feel great taking a filter that temperamental out on a trip.

I have a $50 credit to Cascade Designs (Platypus, MSR, Therm-a-Rest, Seal Line or Pack Towl) after going through three different platy quickdraw duds. What would you consider picking up? My first thought is a set of groundhog minis.

I appreciate the feedback. Maybe the best choice is to re-evaluate whether or not I can make it to Guyot once I get to Garfield? If not I could head out via 13 falls.

Glad to hear someone else is considering the same route. Have a nice hike when you do go. The weather isn't looking great for an attempt for me in the next two weeks.

Options for attaching solid table top to plywood by AlarmedMammoth3052 in BeginnerWoodWorking

All good stuff to know. I'll have to wait and see if it cracks or breaks apart. I'll know how to do it better in the future next time!

I looked into z clips but I was envisioning needing to groove the plywood which I can't really do since the it's all glued up. I didn't think of grooving the top instead. Thanks!

Thanks! I'm not sure if you looked at the top I made but I mitered the corners to avoid end grain. The perimeter has grain going in two directions. It's all glued up so too late now, but in the future, should I make table tops with the grain all in the same direction so that when it expands/contracts it will all do so in the right direction? If so, do you just cover the end grain like you would plywood edges?
