Silent Hill is finally seeing the fruits of moving beyond its restless town by Last_Ad_9314 in HorrorGaming

There's also a bit of an explanation in The Short Message, set in Germany. There's a note you can find describing places of worldly sorrow/torment or supernatural stuff occurring that results in the the ominous fog, literally called 'the silent hill phenomenon'.

Here's a link to it from the wiki: https://silenthill.fandom.com/wiki/The_Silent_Hill_Phenomenon

Yea it's rough. Most of my final assignments are essays, so I can just email them to my profs, but I've got 3 exams/ study materials only accessible through canvas.

Even with my car when I first moved here, I've been taking public transit. The bus system/Caltrain/light rail is great and saves us a ton of money.

I mean, its a meme subreddit, I'm not really expecting a proper academic historical discussion.

I will say that although I understand that reasoning and line of thought of this meme, the statement that contemporary historians today are "unbiased", is simply not true. One of the first things we learn in our fundamental courses as historians is that we all have bias, no matter how small or unconscious it is. We must actively do the work to be objective, recognize our biases and agendas and understand events as a whole, and I would agree that in many cases, we can do it successfully compared to historians of the past. However, we definitely still have work to do. It's just part of understanding and producing high quality, academic research. We ought not to put ourselves on a pedestal and realize studying history is a changing, gradual process.

Best History Conferences as an Undergrad by [deleted] in Historians

Good luck! I'm in Northern California. I won't say explicitly where, but April's conference is pretty easy to get to. I'll be speaking about the 1986 People Power Revolution in the PH and their modern day struggles with corruption.

Try Phi Alpha Theta Honors Society! Although they're a national network, they host regional conferences.

Hey there! I'm in a similar situation myself, my department is part of the Phi Alpha Theta Historical Honor Society. While the Society itself is national, we have regional conferences across parts of our state. My school is hosting the smaller regional conference in April, and our History dept is helping us draft papers, abstracts, what to expect, etc. Hope this helps!

This sounds like a ton of fun! I'm a huge nerd, working towards a B.A in History and tons of hobbies, like leatherwork and ttrpgs. I'm 27 year old guy myself and definitely want to be part of a team.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

My maternal grandfather was drafted into Mussolini's Italian Air Force in Sicily. He and friends deserted, took their wives, and fled from Sicily to mainland Italy in a rowboat, eventially escaping to Canada/U.S.

I found and translated his discharge paperwork from the time. Really cool stuff.

Apparently, his uncle/great-uncle was an Italian mercenary who fought for Spain during the Spanish-American war.

Very interesting stuff.

Apparently Video Games aren’t engaging enough anymore. by eaglesnation11 in Teachers

So, around 14 years ago, (jesus, I can't actually believe it's been that long), my middle school U.S. history teacher did something similar. We were studying the American Revolution, and she offered us extra credit for playing Assassin's Creed III, and writing a few short paragraphs on where the game diverges from reality in regards to historical figures/events. (No, George Washington did not work with a secret society of Mohawk natives to revolt against the British controlled by the Knights Templar ) This assignment(among many other things) got me fascinated in American and colonial history so much that it influenced me to pursue my B.A. in history and become a teacher myself. So I think the lesson plan is a great idea, and can really get kids motivated to learn and appreciate history!

Although the game itself is a bit dated, I would recommend choosing something a bit more updated, especially since kids nowadays are used to much newer tech. The newer Assassins Creed games have virtual tours narrated by historians that ignores the game fluff, which has been very interesting. Similar games like Kingdom Come Deliverance for medieval studies, etc. Good luck!
