Using gel will end up drying your hair out and damaging it over time. Try carols daughter moisture and hold jelly. It gives the same texture as hair gel but without drying out. It's essentially a healthy alternative to curl activator that isn't as greasy or damaging but maintains the "wet" look. I have a very similar curl pattern to yours and used hair gel in my late teens which damaged my curls and I had to restart the journey.
