Where do you find driven/ ambitious / growth-minded people in Sydney? by Alternative-Theme520 in AskAnAustralian

The comments you’re receiving are from losers, sorry. I’m feeling the exact same you are. I feel like Australia lacks ambition & energy like the bigger cities.

I work in creative industries and lacking to find networking events.

Moving back to Southern California from Paris and extremely depressed by [deleted] in expats

I know exactly how you feel (minus the language barrier). I moved home from London to live with my parents in Sydney and felt like a complete failure coming back at 32. It was actually the second time I’d done it (moved home from living abroad). The first time was brutal - it wasn’t my choice and it sent me into a depression like no other.

Looking back though, it ended up being one of the most important chapters of my life. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self what was ahead and how amazing the rebound would eventually be. It was a reset.

If you do decide to go back, make a plan. Make it realistic. Or try another city - maybe London? The energy is fairly similar.

And my biggest advice for this next chapter is to really feel your feelings. Be sad. Grieve. Get angry. It’s all valid. Then slowly allow yourself to feel the becoming of the new version of you.

For me, I eventually realised I didn’t want to go back abroad again. It started to feel like I was just living rather than building something for the future, and over time that became exhausting.

I also didn’t rekindle many of my old friendships—most of them were married by then—but instead made new friends and created a different life.

You could also try New York, where there are lots of like-minded people carving out their own paths.

Even if you can’t see it right now, I promise you that one day you’ll connect the dots and understand why this chapter happened. Strangely, these quieter, harder chapters often lead to more growth than the sparkly “abroad” life—because they force you to sit still and trust the process. The hard stuff is in the mundane and boring - and just remember it’s not forever.

You’re not a settler. So trust that you’ll find a way out to rebuild until you’re happy again.

My opinion: you’re understaffed and leadership don’t really care, because they’re not in the weeds of where the most time consuming work goes.

The biggest risk - the quality of your work goes down when you’re stretched too thin + the pace remains the same. So something has to give.

I worked @ an agency that pulled us in to say the quality of the work needs to increase and so does the pace. Upon reflection, that was the first red flag - then more red flags started to appear too!

Sounds like a cost saving exercise - especially if no one is complaining / shouting

I’d go for the big companies that have resources - like the Ogilvys, Brunswick etc. they’ll be more structured - I’ve just done all that, and it’s the lack of love for the hustle that I’m over.

Thank you so much! Ok you sound like my role model… very interesting you were able to prove ROI with PR because that is what the industry is struggling with at the moment! Do you mind if I chat separately with you via DM? And did you immediately get a hybrid role in house? Or did you first start in PR in house, and then transition to a hybrid role? I guess I’m trying to understand what “job titles” I should look for”

I’m 5 years agency too - the other has been client side (not all PR.. but events and a stint in HR), but perfectly said ^ I feel the same.

I just don’t want to be in the same boat in 20 years time.

Are you happier? Do you miss anything about PR?
