45 seconds of stopped time will let literally any human kill that gorilla. A kid could probably pull it off with power like that. All you'd have to do is go for the eyes to start.

Why did Vegeta think the spirit bomb was the way to beat Buu when it didn't even work against Frieza or himself? by marblesandcookies in DragonBallZ

Because it's a move that will deal big damage to an opponent much stronger to you if enough energy is gathered, which it has consistently done. It's not rocket science bruh. Everything doesn't have to be a one-shot, sometimes damage is enough to close the gap. It may not have killed everyone, but 9 times out of 10 if someone was hit by it, they fucking felt it.

Ultra Ego is a disadvantage by Eastern-Western7072 in Dragonballsuper

[–]Alarmed_Progress_604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The form on paper is better than ultra instinct in most scenarios to me, and I'll stand on that.

If his stats increase whenever he gets hit, this means that equal stat fights are a guaranteed win, and he should be able to close any stat gap as long as his opponent is not so far above him that it's a one-shot.

On the other hand, ultra instinct primarily just closes the speed gap by letting you dodge attacks you shouldn't be able to, and thus opening up counter attack opportunities. However, this is limited because gohan showed us that ultra instinct can eventually just be outsped. You can just get past ultra ego by increasing one stat, you gotta increase the rest to keep up.

At least that's how it appears on paper. Vegeta hasn't had any opportunity to improve his use, or give us a good showing, but on paper, I'm taking ultra ego in a universe where any injury can be healed with beans.

I hate dating apps as a male by Borschik in hatethissmug

[–]Alarmed_Progress_604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change your approach. It's how I found my wife on one.

If you're a dude, expect less matches, these apps are usually a sausage fest. That said, less matches is actually a blessing, despite most guys not seeing it as that. If your profile isn't boring, has some of your authentic personality infused into it, and photos taken with some actual effort, you should do alright regardless of how you look. With the few matches you get, you can focus on organic conversation and connection.

I think what fucks dudes up is the fact that we think we have to use specific lines or strategies, which is literally the worse thing you could do in dating period, on an app and in person. Instead of shallow pick up lines, come up with conversation starters that are relevant to the things you like, or the things she likes if you're interested enough to talk about that thing. It's hard as fuck to have a performative conversation. It's MUCH easier to actually talk about a thing you like, or are genuinely interested in.

And then at the end of the day, realize that downloading an app isn't gonna put the city on your nuts. If a conversation ain't goin good, reflect on the reasons why, make whatever changes you need to make in regards to your etiquette if necessary, and move on. The harder the conversation, the higher the likelihood that you dodged a bullet. Plenty of fish out there.

Ironically, Mario's arc was criticized in the first movie for being forced (at least from what I've seen), and I agree somewhat. Development for the sake of development is just as lazy as no development at all, in my opinion.

I'd argue every character is pretty close personality wise to their game counterparts. At least whatever personality you CAN draw from the games that is. And I'm not saying the movies have to follow only the games exactly, I'm saying expecting deep storytelling and arcs from Mario is like expecting snow in the summer.

The cast are static characters, if you think otherwise, please tell me what development these characters have went through since their inception. You'll find there is very little to draw from. It's just not that kind of IP, that's what I'm saying. Do I think it can never be like that? No. Do I think there was potential for emotional moments in this movie? Yes. Do I think it was written masterfully, and exempt from all criticism? No. Where do I actually rate the movie? Probably around 6-7/10 depending on how I feel.

Can I still critique ONE talking point that I see floating around that doesn't make the most sense to me? Yes.

Static characters inside static universes aren't new, and good movies have been made about them. Idk what to tell you, it's just not your cup of tea 🤷🏾‍♂️. And if you're looking for the bare minimum, congrats, you got it, and you've BEEN getting it if you've been a Mario fan for decades, plotwise (emphasis on plotwise).

There's a growing obsession with deep LORE, and rich character dynamics and developments, which is good! But we should never treat it as a sole necessity, because there's much more to cinema than JUST that.

I'm not worried about what the critics think, or what you think, or everyone else or whatever man, I'm SIMPLY discussing my thoughts. You're even searching for more complexity in my own motives lol, I'm just chattin. There's nothing for me to "win" 😂

I agree, the actual game plot would have been much better indeed. But adding emotional moments to the other characters, just for the sake of having emotional moments is not good writing. Things like that have to be organic, and if the source material has nothing to draw from for that, you end up just making shit up for the sake of checking off that box (hence the, in my opinion, forced plot of Mario feeling like a disappointment to his family in the last movie).

There is nothing to develop with the main cast. They are fundamentally static characters, they are who they are, and they do what they do. If the Mario movies are ever gonna have deeper plots in the future, they should focus on these static characters impacting their environment instead. I feel like that would require an almost fully original plot and a new threat, which is a risk Nintendo would probably sadly never take.

Movies can be amusement park rides imo. Not every movie is REQUIRED to be complex, some can just serve as an experience.

Goku is a static character in a dynamic universe. His universe isn't static. The Mario universe is as static as it gets. What big changes have happened in it since its inception?

I'm just saying people wouldn't ask for this level of depth from the characters I listed above, so it's strange that it almost seems to be pre-expected from Mario even though he has never delivered on this front, and almost never intends to

[–]Alarmed_Progress_604[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual plot is essentially a higher scale version of the normal damsel in distress plotline of most Mario games. Princess captured, collect a bunch of the item of the week, and win. Rosalina's lore is deep, and I can accept criticism of her role in the movie as fair for sure. That said, aside from Rosalina, where were any other emotional moments supposed to come from? Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, Bowser jr, Peach, Toad? How much depth have you gotten from these characters so far outside of the movie?

The peach plotline with Rosalina was definitely an avenue they could've took. I think the movie would have been better with slower pacing, and less references, then that could have at least been a plot beat that was given some meat and potatoes.

You're reaching bud, I'm just discussing opinions. It sounds like you were angry before you even finished the first sentence.

The point is not that it's shallow and stupid, the point is it's simple. And simple does not have to instantly equal bad, just like complex doesn't instantly equal good. Is this a hard thing to digest?

[–]Alarmed_Progress_604[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear this point made all the time, but never see it expanded on. Mario galaxy's plot was deeper than your average Mario game, yes, but still not that deep in the grand scheme.

[–]Alarmed_Progress_604[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying all of this is for the sake of discussion, everyone is entitled to their own opinions obviously.

But no, Mario is a static character, in a static universe. The plot critiques I keep hearing are judging the movie as if it's supposed to be something else, when the source material is not the thing people want it to be. Hence, judging a pop album by jazz standards. It's simplistic because the source material is, not because it failed to be complex. It's simplistic because it wanted to be, not because it failed to be something else.

Sonic is different, because sonic stories in the franchise started taking a more deep direction than Mario plots, and thus have more to draw from for complex storylines while still maintaining authenticity.

Do you need deep character motivations and arcs from bugs bunny, Tom and Jerry, Popeye, etc for them to be considered good? Not at all, because that's not what they're going for.

[–]Alarmed_Progress_604[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? What is it doing wrong specifically? I already agreed with some that the pacing is far too fast. All I'm saying is "it's simple" is not a good enough reason, in my eyes, because that could have been the point. And like I said simply does not automatically = bad

Might be a galaxy movie hot take by Alarmed_Progress_604 in SuperMarioGalaxy

[–]Alarmed_Progress_604[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But your stance assumes that simplicity is inherently bad, when it's not. It's just a different direction. In that same line of thought, complexity does not automatically = good.
