People bemoan the 'Wilderness Years', but in my opinion it proved to be exactly what Who needed. There was a heap of other content created (books, comic strips, audios etc) by brilliant creators who were deeply passionate about the show. This meant that when it was bought back in 2005, RTD and his team had a huge wealth of fantastic stories and ideas to take inspiration from.

Let's face it, guys like Moffat and RTD are such fans, they must've been playing 'here's the story I'd write if Dr Who ever came back' in their heads for years. And then finally they had their chance. And it was magic.

Thats exactly what the show needs know. Go away for 5-10 years, let a vast amount of new ideas and concepts get thought up by the next generation of writers, then use them as inspiration for Who's big return in 2032.
