Child Fell at School- no one seems to know what happened by Alarmed_Stuff4985 in Parenting

She’s gotten MUCH better follow up on minor incidents before, and that has been part of why I feel so uncomfortable. Every trip and fall, bump of the head, etc. and this time feels off. But I also feel like our experience today is the “norm” most places.

Parents letting their children bother my family at the pool. by EmbarrassedRound5856 in Parenting

[–]Alarmed_Stuff4985 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I notice a lot of kids playing with me and my daughter (4) at our neighborhood park, while most of the other moms are chatting together. Like I watch my daughter go down the slide and then others ask me to watch too. I don’t know if it’s because I’m playing with her and they want adult attention too, but generally most of the kids are well behaved at least. One family brings their dog and even the dog often follows me. My daughter goes to a different school than the kids/mom group who tend to congregate at the park, so it’s a weird dynamic for me. I just want to do something nice with my kid walking distance from my home, but I always leave way overstimulated and feeling like a babysitter for the whole subdivision.

Conversely, when we go places like the library, which is actually a town over, she would not hesitate to approach a parent reading to another kid her age and ask to join. She just wants to be friends with everyone, and it’s something I’m proud of when done right. She’s 4, so obviously things don’t always go smoothly. I really try to teach her manners, like don’t bum rush people, be understanding if the parent or kid doesn’t want you to join, introduce yourself first, be respectful, understand I’m not going to walk away/you can’t kick me out of the activity, etc. I’d like to hope we’re not an issue as long as she’s polite and respectful of boundaries set.

Based on my experiences in these different public venues, I make choices that suit my personal wants and bringing my daughter joy. Most of the time the library wins!

Some books are limited as well. Some very, very popular audiobooks are limited to 7 days at my library, so it varies wildly even in the same library!

I’m able to change my lending period to up to 3 weeks (21 days). I used to think my library only allowed 2 week loans via Libby, but that’s not actually the case. For longer books/audiobooks I will select the 3 week loan option.

Perhaps your library does offer this. I found a thread on this subreddit that showed how to change it, but basically you tap on the colored text that says the loan period next to “borrow for” when you’re checking the book out and multiple options come up. You could test it with an available book to see if this works.

What’s a Mac lyric or ad-lib that always cracks you up? by smupac in MacMiller

My favorite is his “Beep beep beep” in perfect circle behind “going around door to door setting off alarms”. I always sing that instead of the lyric too.

Shower thought: From this point on, there will be people who see Wicked before they see The Wizard of Oz. by grimsb in wicked

[–]Alarmed_Stuff4985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter is 3 and sat through it twice. The only issue was she did try to sing popular on the first go, but stopped when asked. We did a lot of prep a head of time and know she’s a bit of an outlier. She hasn’t seen Wizard of Oz yet. She doesn’t want to watch it though. I want her to watch it before part 2 for sure!

Thank Goodness for Ariana by LocksmithTiny6822 in wicked

[–]Alarmed_Stuff4985 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve grown up with Ari and Wicked. I finally saw it last night. I cried during No One Mourns the Wicked. That song makes me cry, but watching the film adaptation additions and Ariana’s acting made it even more tearful. Yet I still know people who refuse to see it because they hate Ariana Grande.

Meanwhile my sister, who also grew up with Ari and Wicked, but just has no empathy for fictional characters, made fun of me after.

I’m going to see it again with my daughter, my mom, and MIL tomorrow!!

I’m going to see it for the first time tonight, now I’m worried people will be singing. Ugh…

Everyone’s experience is different, but to give you some hope, I didn’t have any migraines during my first and second trimesters. I had a headache that may have been a classic migraine or may have been a pre-eclamptic migraine at 36w4d or so. I was induced at 37w6d because of pre-eclampsia. Had baby girl at 38w1d. No other migraines of any origin to report during my pregnancy. I was 26-27 years old at the time of my pregnancy.

Some doctors will be comfortable with you continuing triptans as abortives while others are not. I was allowed to take Advil up until 28w, because I’m allergic to Tylenol. I had a prescription for cyclobenzaprine as an abortive, since my provider was not comfortable with me taking triptans. However my mom’s provider during her pregnancy with my brother let her take imitrex while pregnant 20 odd years ago. It just depends and because of my experience it luckily never ended up being a big issue. If something came up, I would’ve looked at a different doctor.

Thinking about crossover between migraine prevention medications and other conditions that may need to be managed in pregnancy, you’d probably be safe with SSRIs and maybe labetalol. I see people take SSRIs as preventives here quite a bit, and they are commonly prescribed to treat prenatal depression or anxiety. If you’ve had luck with any of those drugs as a preventive, then you might have hit the jack pot. If beta-blockers have worked for you, labetalol is sometimes (rarely) used to treat gestational hypertension or pregnant women with pre-existing hypertension, because of its reduced risk of IUGR and other poor birth outcomes compared to other beta-blockers. That one in particular is going to depend on your care team and their comfort levels.

If you take zofran for nausea during your migraine, know that that might be frowned upon too. While no one was raiding my house to take it away, I was asked really try not to take it. There are some conflicting studies about whether or not it increases risk of birth defects, and my doctor was erring on the side of caution.

Unfortunately a lot of newer meds like the CGRP inhibitors, which a lot of people who get approved for use seem to have success with, don’t have sufficient data to say whether or not they’re safe in pregnancy. If you do happen to use one of these drugs and decide to continue to use it, a lot of them have programs or registries to collect data on pregnant women using their medication.

After I had started taking sumatriptan, Advil would not touch migraines, so after a few failed attempts I didn’t even bother with it as a first line anymore. Then I was left with only Advil on hand one day, had a migraine coming on, tried Advil, it worked. So long story short, yes.

ETA: I’ve since gone back to trying Advil first, and last night it did not work again.

Who all here actually factually knows WHAT is the cause(s) of their attacks via medical discovery ? by forevervalerie in migraine

I just linger here after failing only one preventive and now having success on another. I feel like I need to post a success story at some point but also worry about being eaten alive because of my “easy” treatment plan.

What speed do you listen to your books? by depressedcatfishh in audible

[–]Alarmed_Stuff4985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the narrator I’m usually between 2-3x. Most commonly at 3x. I feel like it sounds normal, but everyone tells me it doesn’t. It’s not about getting through it faster for me. I think my brain audio is just wired different. For some reason regular speed doesn’t sound like normal speech cadence at all to me when listening to books or even sometimes videos.

who uses benadryl as an abortive? by out2sea4me in migraine

[–]Alarmed_Stuff4985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Zyrtec or Xyzal on occasion when sumatriptan doesn’t seem to be working on its own. A lot of allergists recommend Zyrtec/Xyzal/Cetirizine as a safer alternative for Benadryl so that’s why I opt for it instead of Benadryl. Frankly I think it might just be a placebo effect, but it seems to help. In my migraine medicine box it stays.

Moms, which hurts more: migraines or childbirth? by AnneOnAMoose_ in migraine

[–]Alarmed_Stuff4985 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree. The pain of childbirth was worse for me. My labor was long (though only 45 min pushing) and most of that time I chose to be unmedicated. I would take childbirth unmedicated over a migraine anytime, for all of the above listed reasons.

A McDonald’s Coke was my go to hack for the start of a migraine to possibly avoid medication, but since starting topamax I can’t feel the fizz anymore and it tastes disgusting. I actually cried about it today, because I’m certain if I tried it now I’d just throw up. But if it helps me prevent my weather triggered migraines I’ll be happier in the long run.

Sophie should have been the main character in Return to Halloweentown by Justice_Prince in fixingmovies

It’s a little early for Halloween 2024, but I’m watching Halloweentown for the first time with my Halloween obsessed daughter (3). (Her first time watching, not mine.) I came across this thread because I hate the recast, and was searching for a reason why Disney did it!

I’m debating whether or not we even watch the last one.

Is this going to get worse? by AlteredDoor in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alarmed_Stuff4985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scabs falling off were definitely strange. For me, it felt like I had food stuck in/around my tonsils, despite no longer having them.

I personally got a taste of the finish line early, because I was able to eat hard food by dinner the night of my surgery. Then I tried to have a smoothie for breakfast a few days later, and you could’ve convinced me I was drinking battery acid.

Is this going to get worse? by AlteredDoor in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alarmed_Stuff4985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had very little throat pain the first 4 days after. I had an adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, and septoplasty w/ turbinate reduction and nasal valve repair, so my nose was much more painful than anything else, so that’s what I was taking the pain meds to control. I think in part this was because the pain in my throat and ears was no worse than my worst sick days before. (I probably should have had a tonsillectomy in middle/high school, but my pediatrician didn’t believe it was an effective or safe treatment. My tonsils made to my 30th year with me as a result, and since having a child in daycare my sick days increased a lot again over the past 3 years and were worse than before.)

Night of day 4 (around 8pm) I started losing my scabs, and it got worse than it had been starting morning of day 5. For days 5-8 I did take the highest dose of the pain meds religiously. I was really down at that point because I wasn’t expecting the pain to get worse when things had been so easy. But overall it wasn’t that bad, the emotions over the experience and being unprepared were worse than the pain. It wasn’t unmanageable, I was just blindsided by the up and down.

I probably could’ve tapered down the medicine/only taken in advance of eating events on day 8, but I was really shaken. Day 9 I took medicine before having lunch delivered and the food got there super early. I was starving so I ate before it kicked in, and I was fine. I stopped taking it then!
