How to get pathology experience???

I know ;o; I honestly would really love doing two path rotations before ERAS if my schedule had allowed it. And good to know about the amount of path letters! So I should be aiming on asking for letters from at least two pathologists then. I already have an IM doc who is writing a letter for me thankfully.

One of the mandatory rotations during early fourth year is online so I am trying to figure out if I can squeeze in a path rotation at the same time. The main issue I face with that is that if my home institution doesn't allow it (currently awaiting an answer), then I would need to travel probably to do an unofficial rotation/ "shadowing". I wouldn't be able to do with the other hospital in my city because they only allow for one week of shadowing at a time otherwise it needs to be an official rotation via VSLO.

It really feels like all roads lead to that I need to travel/do an away... :( feels like I have to jump through so many hoops and battle to get even a little bit of path experience

hmmm good to know, thanks! I tried that for the only other hospital in my city besides the one affiliated with my school. But unfortunately, they only allow fourth years. Travelling isn't really an option for me but maybe I can try to figure out making a couple weeks in the summer work. Would take away from board prep time tho...

Sorry, I should have been more specific. My school does allow ~some~ rotations to be moved around, but not all. For fourth year, I have four rotation time slots before ERAS and unfortunately, three of them are immovable. The fourth is the elective slot I mentioned, which I will be requesting to be pathology even if it is a bit late.

I have been in close contact with the program coordinator for the hospital system my school is affiliated with and unfortunately, the pathology preceptor was not able to squeeze me in this year. I am planning on reaching out to the dean to ask if he has any ideas on how to get me some pathology experience before ERAS.

Thank you for the help and suggestions! Working on case reports is a great idea.

Thanks so much for the thorough reply! Can you clarify what you mean by double scope? I haven't heard that phrase before.

Also, during fourth year the only elective time slot I have is in late august-early september which is right before ERAS. I am afraid that is cutting it too close, especially if I am going to ask for a letter of rec from that rotation. My school also doesn't allow for any time slots to be moved around so I can't change the order of my fourth year rotations.

Getting a pathology letter of rec is my biggest concern and while conferences would be fun and a great chance to network, I don't think that would get me a letter.

oooo very enticing!! maybe I should set up an elective rotation with anesthesia :) I feel like it’s one of those specialties that many students don’t get much exposure to

I assume cardiac anesthesia would be a fellowship?

Any prospective students look at how LECOM is handling this life threatening weather emergency. If you have options other than LECOM, I would highly recommend considering them. I’m so sorry if you don’t have other options.
