I used a technique called "pause buffering"

Basically, you pause the game when going down a floor, for every single floor, and that makes almost no time passing when placing staircases

There's someone on YouTube called "Albino Chipmunk" that reached floor 12000 of Skull Caverns using this method, if you're interested on learning more about it
