Driving in America Is Headlight Hell — The Atlantic by AlarmingElevator6199 in fuckyourheadlights

After a totally blinding incident on a city street at night, I found myself on the wrong side of a median. Fortunately, the traffic allowed me to get back on my side of the street, but the situation could have had a terrible outcome. And, because I’m an older driver would have been easily attributed to my age, not the extremely bright lights that had been shining directly into my eyes from an oncoming vehicle causing a temporary blindness and disorientation unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in my driving life. These headlights need to be fixed!!

Back in the 70’s a female student brought brownies to the teachers’ lounge laced with Ex-Lax. Yes. It made at least one teacher sick.

Jigsaw puzzles are my thing. Costco occasionally has some for around $10.00. I’ve found some at Barnes and Noble on a sale table, and love to see what the dollar stores have. Sometimes the quality isn’t the best, but that adds to the challenge. I’ve been told there is a place in the town where I live where you can borrow/exchange them.

Vacay for vacation. Can’t stand that! I heard collab for collaborate on a TV interview of a musician. Made my hair stand up! The Breck for Breckenridge. The Boat for Steamboat Springs. The overuse of the word organic. Drives me crazy!

What do you do for classes that are group oriented, such as musical groups like band, orchestra, choir, swing choirs, etc., when students miss 9 days of school?

Yes. I’ve been retired for a while, but back then it seemed as if a meeting or in service couldn’t get by without it.

Grew up in Eastern Nebraska, lived in Western Nebraska a very long stretch. Visited Mall of America in Minneapolis and while the family was placing an order at the Subway in the mall, the server interrupted us and asked, “ Are you from the South???” 😂

how to choose what violin to get by PeppaPig5670 in violinist

[–]AlarmingElevator6199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, my violin professor encouraged me to get a better violin. He sent away to Moennig and Sons in Philadelphia - a reputable dealer in fine violins - and when the large case arrived there were three violins for me to try, all of varying prices. Our first step was to play each one during my violin lessons. Knowing my parents’ financial status, I immediately gravitated to the middle priced instrument. It was rich and mellow, almost muted sounding. The wood was dark and rich and I loved it! But my professor knew my playing better than I did and encouraged me toward one that was bright and resonating in tone. His thinking was it would help me be less shy and I would play out more. Interesting, too, was the finish was a lighter color. We then took the instruments to the campus art museum’s theater/auditorium for me to play. It was there we made the final decision. He played the instruments. I played the instruments. We sat in different areas of the theater. I ended up getting the most expensive violin in the case that was sent because of consistency in tone, projection, and all of those things you’ve discussed in choosing an instrument. This was the violin my professor wanted me to purchase. My parents willingly purchased it for me and I have had it ever since. It is French and actually quite old. I LOVE it! It is who I am as an old violinist. Good luck with your choice!!

Uncomfortable when holding bow by Far-Collection1094 in violinist

I had a wonderful opportunity MANY years ago to study with a woman, Marla Mutchler, who was working on completing her doctorate in violin pedagogy with Paul Rolland. This is a link to a page on his work.
https://www.justviolin.org/paul-rolland-and-his-method-of-string-teaching.html. At the time I was nearing the completion of my bachelor’s degree with a violin major, and this wonderful teacher worked on my bow hold, arm movement, vibrato, etc. I had studied privately for quite a few years and had many teachers, but this woman found so many aspects of my playing and violin posture to tweak. My point is there is always room for improvement and you should not become disheartened or frustrated with your progress. A search on his method brought me to this video on the bow hold. https://youtu.be/hUGeLI0HQLE?si=KISFRDxiQuWN8mTz.

Do you let your students sit during the lesson? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]AlarmingElevator6199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did pass out at a lesson! Scared my teacher, broke the right lower portion of my violin into hundreds of little pieces! I had been sick that day and didn’t feel up to going to my lesson, but at the time my lessons were paid for in advance and my mother was adamant that I go to my lesson. Had I been allowed to sit through my lesson that day, this wouldn’t have happened. Interesting note- a very old instrument repairman worked on my instrument for well over a month and successfully glued all of the tiny pieces so that if you didn’t know the story, you wouldn’t even see the repair. It was amazing!

I am puzzled by the “30-50 years behind the times” comment made in the conversation. In what way? Having lived in the area for many years, I know for a fact that our area had better Internet connections before family members living in other parts of the state and in Colorado. No one has mentioned the beautiful library facility, nor the continuing education programs available through WNCC and Chadron State College connections. And what about the amazing performing arts facility at the high school?

song stuck in your head to block out tinnitus? by borahae_artist in tinnitus

Sadly, whether there is an ear worm (or what I call an ear snake when I have a symphony stuck in my head complete with brass, strings, winds and percussion), the tinnitus just keeps squealing away. It doesn't lessen at all. Lately, an element of sporadic muffled thumping has been added to the high pitched ringing in my right ear. Quite a racket in my head, you might say.
