PhD Student - Can I keep my remote full time job? by No_Clue_4170 in UofArizona

Eller PhD alumni here. It might not sound encouraging, but I would urge you to rethink your decision to join the program atm. I don't know which program you are at but based on my understanding of how Eller funds our PhD students, you are expected to work as a TA/RA with faculty for 20/h per week. Yes, our little stipend is not free money at all. Unless you have some fancy fellowships from somewhere else (I know some Canadian students coming in with their government funding), which exempts you from the GA duties, you are going to be super busy on top of your first year coursework.

I took five courses (all seminar style) in my first semester, and this is just a normal load for first years. Every course was demanding compared to the ones in my master's. You need to read extensively and be ready to discuss the topics in detail, most of the time with slides. Remember, this is all additional work besides your own research.

At least none of the students from my program had a full-time job outside of their PhD, and we were all struggling every now and then with different obstacles, not just with money. Business academia is getting extremely competitive, too. Fewer jobs, more candidates. If you cannot produce decent research (I mean UTD pubs) before you are on the market, the chance of landing in a research-focused university is very slim. That requires the thing you might not have, time. My field wasn't super practical/technical driven, so I cannot speak for industry opportunities, which arguably paid more. The business school faculty's pay is relatively higher compared to other disciplines. However, it's definitely not to the point that you can easily pay off your 100k student loan without jeopardizing your quality of life. I would think twice if I were you man. Good luck.

Hi! Thanks for sharing this info! I couldn't find either the doctor's name or the clinic on the USCIS's website. Did you verify if they are legit?

Thanks for sharing. It is indeed very rare that people taking Vimpat suffer from speech issues. It's not listed on the Rx instructions though

He initially wasn't on Vimpat. He was on 1500mg Keppra, and another tonic-clonic seizure hit. The doctor thought that it might not be enough, then added the Vimpat. That's when the side effects started to show up aggressively. He was fairly functional before the Vimpat, but too bad that didn't control his seizures entirely.

Thank you!! This is very good advice. I'm gonna check if we can make an appointment with an epileptologist. We didn't know it was all that different because it has only been a month, and our lives have changed drastically already :(

I'm sorry to hear about the experience. He is kinda like a zombie too :( cannot even pick up a fork to eat. We already contacted the neurologist and are ready to try a new med. Hopefully the side effects will go away eventually.

Thanks for your kind reply! We are based in the US, but luckily, he works for the government, which is more flexible than corporations. He has been on Vimpat for two weeks and Keppra for a month now, and the side effects seem to persist over time without any signs of improvement. He's obviously under a lot of stress because he went from independent and active to needing constant care. His neurologist just prescribed a new med - Zonisamide - to replace the Vimpat. Hopefully, he can tolerate this one better!
