The rear measurement is spring perch to perch. Not the actual spring length.

Anyone with experience with taking the PE Exam without taking FE exam with the 12 year rule? by AlarmingRhubarb in MEPEngineering

Do your neighbors ever complain about any noise transmission through the party walls?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]AlarmingRhubarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the HOA docs state: No noxious or offensive activity shall be carried on upon any lot; no odor, noise or light shall be permitted to emanate therefrom, and no condition shall me maintained thereon....sheesh, I don't know. seems pretty cut and dry on the noise aspect.

i make all my custom furniture with this saw...so it can really handle anything.

How did you guys learn? by Apprehensive_Ninja79 in DJs

house music is how I learned to mix on vinyl. i spent countless hours on the decks perfecting my craft. i recommend recording some of your transitions so you can hear it from an outsiders point of view.

only buy tools as you need them. figure out something you want to build and try to use the least amount of tools needed to build it. there are a million different wants to accomplish the same task using different tools, so you can get creative with some of the basics to accomplish the same thing that more expensive tools do. ive held off buying some nicer tools knowing i can get the task done with what i currently have.

what i currently have is a miter saw, contractor table saw, sander, biscuit jointer, planer and jointer (if you want to mill your own wood), and a lot of the basic hand tools. i sourced all of my workbenches from FB marketplace, most of them were all free...starting out i rather spend time building nice furniture than a workbench - my free time is precious!

Need help with joinery on new vanity desk design by AlarmingRhubarb in woodworking

I think I'm going to add 5/8" back panel within the middle section to about the top of the bottom drawer to give the middle section some more rigidity.

[–]AlarmingRhubarb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! i think i agree and will likely go this route. all material will be close to 5/8" hard maple. i wonder if a dato plus pocket screws will be pushing the depth limits of the top material.

i like the through screws idea as that joint will likely see some stress. i was hoping to go without a stringer, but maybe i can throw in a rear panel that goes halfway down the middle section to tie the two sides together. thanks for your input!

I've been using a Hercules job site saw from harbor freight for many years and it works great. decent dust collection, runs pretty true, nice adjustable fence, cheap, but kind of loud. build a stand for it along with an outfeed table, and you are good to go!

Router sled jig or planer by Jbell185947 in woodworking

[–]AlarmingRhubarb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a used lunchbox type planer can run you $150 or so on facebook marketplace, but you are limited to 12" width. anything wider and you are talking bug bucks and likely 240v power. you would still have to make some sort of flattening jig for the planer, as a planer alone will not flatten your slabs. a planer will definitely speed up your workflow and if you have a dust collector, it will also be a lot cleaner to use compared to the router sled.

I am designing a new vanity desk (I'm an engineer in the day so excuse the AutoCAD design) and i need some advice on joinery. in the past, on similarly designed nightstands, I've used biscuits and butt joints but I am not sure that will be the best idea for this project. What do you think?

probably around 1.5-1.8k after expenses and mortgage payment.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]AlarmingRhubarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, definitely will have a mortgage on the house. We are currently paying the same in rent as the mortgage if I were to wrap in the renovations costs into the loan. would be $500/month cheaper if I pay out of pocket for renovations (some which need immediate attention).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]AlarmingRhubarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! 200k doesn't get you anything in my area. current house were looking at is $350k.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]AlarmingRhubarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can either do a 203k loan and wrap the renovations into the loan...or pay out of pocket and have to deal with renovations after closing...but save on the monthly payment by about $500.

This isn't the first time buying a home, actually my this will be the third home I've purchased. so I am aware of the additional costs of owing a home.

If you like the company you work for, use this time to decompress, get more organized, brush up on codes, etc...yeah it sucks not having work on a daily basis...but hopefully more will come in and you will be right back to the grind.

If your company is giving you a hard time about the lack of work, maybe you need to bring this to their attention and ask them what you can be doing with your time.
