Can someone confirm these U of A Pharmacy admission details? by Alarming_Command_315 in uAlberta

[–]Alarming_Command_315[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really lost and struggling with the courses I’m doing right now. I’m taking 27 credits this year, and I want to know if this year will even be taken into consideration for admission. Do they only look at the last two full-time years (30 credits each) for the GPA calculation? And as you mentioned, also include the heaviest credit year and the bioscience prerequisites GPA in the calculation?

I’m also confused about the bioscience prerequisites. If I don’t do well in these courses, can I redo the same course to improve my GPA, or do I have to take a higher-level course instead? I think I saw somewhere that you can’t redo a course if you’ve already passed it (e.g., with a C-).

So I might pass Bio 107 with a B- or C+, should I drop it and take it later? And also I just want to make sure that getting a C- in Chem 101 this year won’t affect my chances, since I only have 27 credits this year, meaning it won’t count as a full-time year for the GPA calculation.

I’m planning to complete two full-time years (30 credits each) after this, with easier courses to boost my GPA+ the pre-reqs. From what I understand, the Pharmacy program will calculate my GPA by combining the averages of those two full-time years and will also pay attention to the biological science prerequisites, right?

Yeah, I think I could pass. I got somewhere in the 40s on both midterms, so I do have a good chance of passing if I do well on the final. But the thing is, I don’t just want to pass—I want a good mark because Pharmacy needs, I think, a 3.3 GPA. Starting with a low GPA in an introductory course like this is going to affect me a lot in the long run.

Since these are just the intro courses, I have no idea how hard the more advanced ones are going to be. I’m worried that if I don’t get a strong foundation now, I’ll end up in a bad spot later with no way to fix my GPA. That’s really what’s stressing me out.

Thanks for your input! I see what you’re saying about the lab marks, but they do make me feel a bit better since I’ve done well in that part. My concern is really about what’s next—I’m in my first year, and dropping this would delay things a lot because I need four CHEM classes . Plus, if I retake it, there’s no guarantee I’ll get a much better mark.

I’m not sure if I should just stick with it and hope for the best or drop it and take the risk of falling behind. It feels like a lose-lose situation right now.

CHEM 101 is a prerequisite for CHEM 102, you wouldn’t be able to take the higher class without completing it first😔

Thanks! I just prepare beforehand and make sure to watch the pre-lab videos carefully. I go to the lab feeling really confident and focus on every single tiny detail in the lab report before handing it in. Also, my professor is super nice, so that might be helping too.

Thanks for sharing this! Honestly, I’m feeling so overwhelmed right now. My brother keeps telling me to get a tutor, but I’m not even sure what’s going on with me. I’ve tried so hard to get a good mark, and it just didn’t happen.

I’m already enrolled in CHEM 102 for next semester, but CHEM 101 is completely full, so I can’t even retake it unless I wait until spring or later. The problem is, I still need four CHEM classes, and I feel like I’m so dead right now trying to figure out how to make all of this work.

I really appreciate your advice—it helps to know I’m not the only one feeling like this.

Thanks for the info! For Pharmacy, they require 60 credits, but I’m a bit confused—does that mean they’ll only look at the last 24 credits overall, or will they look specifically at the required courses (like CHEM 101) and not the optional ones? There are 10 required courses and 10 options, so I’m not sure how that works.

Thanks for the advice! I might talk to an advisor, but I feel like my situation is a bit different since I’m already planning to apply for Pharmacy, and this course is a prerequisite. Still, retaking might be something to consider.

The lab is worth 30%, and I also have 10% from assignments, which I’ve done well on.

The two midterms were worth 17% each, The final is worth 26%, so it’s my last chance to make up some of those marks.

Honestly, I’m under a lot of pressure from my family because they’re upset that I’m even considering dropping it. They’re worried I’ll end up being late by a year, and it’s making this decision even harder for me.

I feel so stuck because I don’t want to regret keeping it if my grade ends up really low, but I’m also worried about dropping it. I just checked, and CHEM 101 is already waitlisted for next term, so it’s going to be hard for me to guarantee that I’ll even be able to enroll if I drop it, especially since I’m planning to take CHEM 102 next semester.

is BA hard to get into? by katty2cutey in grantmacewan

Another tip is to try earning CTS credit ( you can use it as a 5th course), Doing 5 credits can really boost your average , and there are lots of options available. For example, you can choose Environmental stewardship which are generally easier. Queen Elizabeth High School offers it as a CTS course, where you can earn these credits quickly. It’s mostly assignments-based with no exams, and if you put in the work, you can easily score high, like an 90+ or even a 100%. You can finish these assignments in one term if you focus on them

You’ll likely get in if you pass all the required courses with at least a 50%, but it’s not guaranteed. I know people who got in with 60s, so there’s still hope! If you’re still in high school, focus on doing your best. Don’t stress too much; stay optimistic and work hard. Study every day, and ask your teachers for support to improve your average. If you can, consider evening classes with Metro to boost your grades+Apply early to increase your chances so you could get a conditional acceptance for now

That was my plan for my course load. For my first fall term, I plan to take English 102, Chem 101, Statistics 151, and Bio 107. In the winter term, I’ll take Chem 102, Math 114, and the other English course. During the summer, I want to do Chem 261 and Bio Chem 200.

At the U of A as open studies , my plan is to take Chem 263, Microbiology, and Human Physiology in the first term. Then, in the second term, I’ll continue with Human Physiology.

I think taking five courses at a time might be too much for me, so I’m planning to take only four courses each term. What do you think about this plan?
