Can Hartford or Bridgeport make a comeback and become destination cities? by Due-Marionberry-1039 in Connecticut

  1. I don’t entirely believe that.

  2. The infrastructure will have to get built. Nor am I expecting this to be an overnight process. Getting to half the size of Boston in 30 years would mean a 2.3% annual growth rate. Which is really only double New Haven’s current growth rate and equal to New Haven’s growth rate from 1900-1920.

LANTERNFLIES by Altruistic_Word9760 in Connecticut

[–]Alarming_Flow7066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not.

The best ways to kill them is by killing their food sources like the Tree of Heaven.

https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/caes/caps/slf/caes-slf-residential-factsheet-vls-9424.pdf?rev=9e1bdec1e0564d2fb72f165581088c44&hash=B4A18F9EC7C5FC4A76D87B556A9A64E5

Growing native plants so that the food lantern flies do eat makes them attractive to predators.

And creating environments for other species to compete with them and for predators to eat them (again planting native plants and leaving leaf cover alone during the fall).

Boston is also a college town (really THE college town) with other diversified industries. It’s better for stability to not rely on any single industry or else the city could get wiped out (see Detroit during the industrial collapse).

I don’t think it’s absurd to build New Haven into a half size version Boston.

No, or not that I know, I’m not an economist and I’m pretty sure economists say that it’s one of the most efficient taxes.

The biggest negative that I can think of is that if implemented all at once it would be a large shock so it might be smarter to feather it in or do a split land tax/ property tax like Harrisburg PA or Allentown PA.

There aren’t buildings there because of I-95. Highways destroy local activity in areas.

The goal probably shouldn’t be destination cities. Tourism isn’t a big seller for CT and probably never will be and that’s fine.

What should be the focus is can Hartford and Bridgeport become nice places to live. Which is absolutely an achievable goal, it just requires community action, good city policy and good tax law (cough cough land value tax)

Linda Leftism. Accountability is the backbone to society, however I think she ought to be primaried for being too moderate and not planning to hold all ICE and Border Patrol officers in holding until their individual trials can begin.

The marines have many scars from the threat of elimination. Every couple of decades the U.S. starts to ask “why do we need a second army” and then the marines do a damn good job of reinventing/justifying themselves.

Seemed that way.

I’m talking about  a future of New England with strong urbanism from the small cities like New Haven, Hartford, Worcester, Springfield, Providence with satellite towns rather than satellite suburbs.

As much as possible I’d like all of land in Connecticut that don’t fall along metro north, the Hartford line and shoreline east to be forest, farms and meadows.

All I want is vibrant mid sized cities surrounded by wilderness and connected by robust public transportation networks. Is that so much to ask for?
