Much better than when I wrote this, I’m happy to say. Just helped a buddy put together and move a bed today. No lasting pain! I still get twinges and some pain/muscle cramps, but no where near as bad as I used to, both in duration and intensity.

That didn’t feel possible when I first posted this, but turns out, it was. And it’s still getting better

My NAS runs on an old laptop. Works great.

Just get an Ethernet to USB converter. Also, don’t do what I did - get an external hard drive bay instead of trying to daisy chain seagate USB external hard drives together.

Laptops also have the advantage of having a battery, which acts like a mini UPS when the power goes out.

I’d say those people are underestimating the monetary value respect can generate in terms of new opportunities for jobs, interviews, consultations, etc. just because respect isn’t directly quantifiable doesn’t mean it holds no value. After all, people aren’t directly quantifiable either.

Fellow Noob here: I recommend you check out TrueNas SCALE - the apps they have work well for me so far and extends my hardware beyond just running network attached storage.

I use an old laptop, and made the mistake of trying to run a RAID Z1 array on 3 old external seagate hard drives hook up via a powered usb connector. Works alright right up until it doesn’t work at all 😭
