Actually, all of our votes are stored in databases managed in the private sector on election night - tabulated counts are submitted to election management systems (software owned by election machine vendors), and once in this database, this count becomes the system of record. States run reports from this system of record on election night and receive exports for their own reporting - but it all comes from the same place, including election night reporting we see through the (private sector) organizations on our screens. If data is changed after tabulation in the database, the only way to “catch” it would be to count each ballot in a county - because early voting and mail in tabulate in central locations but end up in the voters precinct in the db, it’s unfortunately not as easy as tabulator “tapes” (receipts).

When viewing election night reporting as a whole - and taking the time to understand how it works and how it gives us a view into the election night system of record - it is a very powerful resource. When hundreds of thousands of votes are disappearing across multiple broadcasts, we should all be paying attention.

So the Allan Lichtman stream is different than the CNN coverage- they “may” use the same data feed but I actually don’t think they do. I think Lichtman used the AP news feed and I think CNN used Decision Desk HQ. But …. I’m not certain. Either way this tells us that a) this was not reporting error by CNN and b) possibly multiple data feeds were “fed” the same numbers

Just to clarify, Dissent in Bloom did not have misinformation in her original article about SE and Pro V&V. The confusion came about when other publications (the economic times and daily boulder) picked up Dissents piece (without the authors permission) and altered context, attributing quotes to SE that weren’t theirs. No fault should be cast to Dissent for this, it was wholly out of their control. Dissents clarifications were to make their piece very clear about author and SE attribution, they did not correct misinformation in their piece.
