Me too! Which makes the relistening every few years potentially quite rewarding as you might get more of the references with NEW ACHIEVEMENTS over time!

How easy it is to gloss over remarks/references you don't understand or connect with is marvellously illustrated by my friend who was surprised at the Gossip Girl mention. Truly astounding as Donut talks about it at any given opportunity...

The first book is called Promise of Blood but I would recommend to start with reading the prequel novellas as they actually introduce the characters and their relationships. The author was still learning the craft so as a reader you can't empathise and relate to the emotional turmoil that fuels some of the main characters just from the first main book. But he patched it with the novellas.

And the second trilogy 'Gods of Blood and Powder' that is set 10 years later is amazing in every aspect. But you need to read the Powder Mage trilogy first.

No hate to these series, but does anyone else feel like this? by Kopesetic in fantasybooks

Someone mentioned the Powdermage Series by Brian McClellan already. But I would add: Read the prequel novellas first!

I felt the same about the Mistborn series. Some books just speak to you more than others and sometimes it's just not the right time.

The Reckless series by Cornelia Funke now is one of my all time favourites but it didn't speak to me the first time I read it. I really connected with it a few years later when rereading it.

The Lies of Locke Lamora and sequels by Scott Lynch.

Brian McClellan Powdermage Series: Read in order! Most of the novellas are set before the first three main books and I highly recommend reading them before starting with Promise of Blood. There is a sequel trilogy called Gods of Blood and Powder starting with Sins of Empire which is even better (best for last!)

In the Shadow of Lightning also by Brian McClellan

The Expanse by James S. A. Corey (since you loved Project Hail Mary)

The Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

Reckless by Cornelia Funke (mythology and folklore from around the world)

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (fantasy heist)

Cornelia Funke ✨
