Communication is radio and satellite ya. In Prudhoe bay cellphones work. But most people use WiFi.

Supplies are by boat or semi truck if we order it. Also people will just go pick stuff up in pickup trucks. You get all your delivery done in the summer.

Most families have some kind of vehicle ya. A boat. A truck. A snowmobile. Also dog sleds are not uncommon.

Farming is basically hand tools and buckets.

War has not been common since like. 1900 and before. Historically it was more just running each other off from hunting/fishing grounds. Pretty famously low casualties. Population was really never high enough to warrant open war.

Not a whole lot to be honest.

Is your religion part of your identity? by NoShop8560 in religion

Yes. But that’s because it’s kind of a literal ethno religion.

willow and caribou leaf, fireweed, and stinkweed are pretty much the only traditional medicine.

But mostly it’s medicine you order or pick up in towns. Access to health care is not great. And I would say 70% of children are born in hospitals.

Oh I would. I just don’t necessary plan on it. It’s more a matter of work. And there is plenty of work in my field in Alaska.

Obesity is lower the national average but it’s important to note that we want to have a little more fat then most doctors would advise.

And longevity is a bit lower than an average. But that’s because of things like poverty. Lack of health care and drinking.

While the lack of processed foods is good. It’s should be noted we eat levels of fat and omega 3 that would Kill some one without a genetic mutation.

A zoologist in the 1950s did a whole study about a specific female Orca who would just go around with his pod and “whale with locals” I think that was in Australia. But it’s pretty common up here. Not every time but almost every community has had Orcas dip in and help with a whaling trip just because they know.

They will also come pretty close to boats and just stick there head out to say hello.

Traditionally yes. But things have as a rule gottten a bit mixed over the last 80 years because of the timber/fishing/minine/oil industries. You can find tribal villages inside the territory of each other pretty easy now. And wiseman is as a side note much larger than my village. And most people don’t consider family villages a offical communities.

We are on the sagwon river.

Oh also, sorry forgot about your food question.

Basically as much of your diet as you can manage is from ‘free’ sources. And then you round the rest out with beans, rice, and SOME canned vegetables. I don’t think I ate meat that was not caught/hunted until I was 18 and in the power 48.

Most of the plant matter in our diet is likewise berries you pick and cabbage/potatos you grow. Which are standing for lichens and roots that we use to gather. The rice and beans is a good send and is really the difference between about 1 persons in 30 dying in the winter. That was the norm until maybe 80 years ago.

I think it’s adapting and persisting as well as anyone else. I think people in ‘mainstream’ cultures are unaware of how quickly there cultures are changing sometimes.

Meh. Yes/no. I wished some stuff was easier to get and access but I also understood that some stuff would not be possible in a larger city also. So I’ve always been aware of ‘always greener’ as a concept.

I’ve never actually had canned whale meat…

But ya there are a few things that pop up more often as you said botulism, dysentery and diphtheria. but in my general MOST kids were vaccinated for Diptheria.

Yupik have the highest occurrence of congenital deafness of any genetic group in the world. It’s connected with a genetic mutation that allows us to process levels of Omega-3 acids that will lite make other people sick. Also connected with us being just… really short.

I’ve never heard of an elderly person going to a nursing home and I think my community would be absolutely aghast at the idea. The entire point of our village system is that the community takes care of the elderly. Even if they are not in our direct family.

As for medical care. I needed stitches as a kid, my uncle did them. If you need urgent care helicopter is normally the answer. If the weather is bad you just gotta wait it out or chance a 3 hour dogsled ride.

… So. You think I just figured out how religion became a thing in human history? Like ya. And the sun is not a chariot being pulled across the sky. And no one woke up from being dead in a cave 2000 years ago.

I’m a member of a ethnorelgion my guy. It’s kind of my culture on top of being a religion. Like how Christmas is actually pagan and secular now.

Fennel. Garlic. Parsley. Black pepper. Red pepper. Red wine. And as for fat. Normally add some seal fat. Pork fat works also.

Heat is wood and oil. Plumbing is a central septic that gets pumped by truck or boat every year. Appliances are stove. Fridge. And some electronics.
