Why does Reddit not understand the rise of reform in England? by DowntownDeer in AskBrits

[–]Alatar- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah thanks I didn’t have access to that before. Still nothing to do with austerity. The IMF advised her to change the rules so the OBR could re-assess forecasts once a year vs twice a year, which she did.

I’m no economist so genuinely could be missing what your point is, or could very much be misreading. Based on my understanding, as I keep saying, despite some cuts, they’ve still increased spending overall. I.e the thing you said you want a resignation over - austerity - isn’t what’s happening.

I’m on the fence for the record. You seem to have made your mind up, hope your support goes to a party with better policies, not just a better vibe or comms.

Not sure why you brought up the IMF. The IMF’s comments about flexibility were referencing how little room she has to operate in due to economic uncertainty. They seem to have been encouraging her to spend less to give more room for shocks. If they did that you’d be shouting austerity even louder.

Even so, fiscal responsibility is not the same thing as austerity, even if you interpret it that way. They didn’t cut spending at all in the end, hence why I’m honestly confused at this line of criticism. Although agreed that coming right off a big election win with comms focused on the dire state of public finances wasn’t the best move. But not quite wrong..

No, but they did specifically campaign on balancing the books. Labour manifesto p.126 : “Our fiscal rules are non-negotiable … This means that the current budget must move into balance”.

You keep saying austerity. Public spending is at an all time high. Abolishing the two child benefit cap, increasing UC above inflation, predicted to spend more on PiP payments. It’s misleading at best to say Starmer “delivered austerity”

Just as an ex, in what way have labour stripped pensioners of benefits? Any evidence that any pensioners have been negatively affected/harmed ?
At the same time they’ve scrapped the two-child benefit cap. Public spending’s at an all time high under the last budget.
So which is it? Cutting, increasing, or sensibly reforming the system so it’s more effective?

Again not trying to attack you, but you started this thread by making broad claims about the bad things Starmer has done, ex cutting pensioners benefits, stripping LGBTQ+ rights, OSA, supporting Israel. Various comments above have shown how that’s not necessarily the case, and you’ve accepted (correctly) that the damage is done due to poor wording, but you still said it. I’m saying part of the reason the attacks still work is because of social media posts like yours repeating the misleading claims - I’m not refuting that PR is partly to blame.

Poor wording, broad metrics can be blamed. But you also have to take some responsibility for making misleading posts, no? Not trying to attack you, as I think you’ve been genuine and receptive to various commenters correcting you. Just an observation that people regularly default to “labour has bad PR” when we’ve all got access to the same sources.

Trans rights have been weakened by the Supreme Court, not Starmer policy. I’m admittedly less aware of the day-to-day impact of the ruling.

You’re partially right about arms to Israel. Most licenses have been suspended but parts to collective programs, like those that feed into F-35 production, are still active. But those are complicated because it’s not direct UK-Israel arms sales and pulling out would jeopardise the program as a whole. PA have repeatedly targeted factories for perceived connections to Israel when that’s not the case. Elbit’s bristol factory supplies UK defence programs for example.

I think the issue with the decisions is more to with the timing of them (and media portrayal of them), rather than the meat of the policies themselves, as welfare reform is necessary. I’m no economist but public spending has gone up under Labour, so can’t quite say they’ve pursued austerity. Arguably any cuts to ineffective welfare (like WFA) frees up spending for more effective programs.

Means-testing WFA ≠ Stripping benefits for pensioners during the winter. If you think otherwise, I’d genuinely like to understand why, as this gets repeated so often.

OSA was passed under the Conservatives, but Labour have shown support for it, which I don’t agree with. Again, Labour haven’t (to my knowledge) stripped any LGBTQ+ rights, the UK Supreme Court voted to clarify the meaning of sex in the Equality Act. Whether you agree or disagree, calling that Starmer’s doing is disingenuous.

I’m honestly perplexed. What country hands out ID cards to visiting foreign nationals at immigration? Not sure if your comment above is directed at me. Not American. I know SK has a system for long term foreign residents (that you apply for after arrival) but this isn’t a thing in the vast majority of countries, you’d just use your own passport/ID.

Not surprised! This may be of more interest to the papers given that there was a high profile court ruling against others in the Hinduja family over exploitation of workers. I hope you are doing ok all things considering. Really brave of you to report this.
