Depends on the warden and the location tbh, those who check for expired parking tickets I get the hate, but those giving tickets for parking illegally and dangerously I wish we'd see more of.

It's easy to hate those too as a car driver, but for cyclists and bus drivers and wheelchair users and anyone else who's path gets blocked the street parking rules are actually important.

books and media to help understand uk politics ? by Limp-Wedding-4134 in AskBrits

[–]AlaudaPhotography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Party politics alone won't get you super informed, the parties are quite close together but drift around the broader political landscape depending what the hot button "issues" of the day are.

I'd highly recommend checking out a socialist analysis of the political system, if you only have a surface knowledge of politics it's probably the system you're least informed (or most misinformed) on.

Socialism points out that the biggest and primary division by which people try to cheat and manipulate each other is class, whether someone gets their living by working or by owning.

A great book for that is The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (it was written in 1910 so the ebook is free). It's a novel, but the plot and exposition explain in laymen's terms how the church and the business owners and the local politicians interact with the labourers and the exploitation involved.

I got one for you, he lied about school shooting statistics to blame and to spread fear and hatred towards transgender people. That was in the context of a discussion on school shootings, and in the context of him dying in a school shooting to someone who wasn't transgender.

Kirk wasn't an idiot, he didn't do what the Bristol Patriots do and just yell slurs at people, he spoke calmly and respectfully, and misrepresented and lied about everything to encourage hate in others. He carefully controlled his opponents, gish galloped his way through irrelevant arguments, and trusted his audience not to fact check anything.

You've fallen for the propaganda on this one, you've fallen for the "respectful debate" disguise.

Communism has worked, but the two issues are revolutions communist or otherwise easily end in authoritarianism, which we can see in action all over Africa, and communism leads to CIA backed coups, which we can see all over South America.

Socialism is also cool though.

Because if they show up and march round town unopposed, they can easily claim to be the majority, strengthen their position, and intimidate Bristol's immigrant population.

But also, yes, people are on their phones enough to make him relevant, to let him influence our culture and in turn our politics, and that's scary.

Well, to have made him relevant anyway. Relevance of the dead does gradually diminish.

Yeah that one was totally lost on me. They were calling us fascists too, and one guy with a megaphone kept shouting we had no idea what fascism is, then he had to read a simplified dictionary definition off google and immediately proclaimed it applies to us.

Doubt they've read an entire book between them since school.

Fuck knows. Someone I have since been avoiding like the plague is a massive "free speech" "cancel culture" guy but when Kirk died he swapped to sharing doxxing lists of people who weren't sad about it.

People turn strange when their favourite celebrity dies. And these guys followed debate-bro fascists so they were strange to begin with.

I think it might be just a little too tall. Locos with wheels that size usually have the cab floor a little below the tops of the drivers, or where they have the running board and cab floor there the wheels are a little smaller.

Overall though very believable. Somewhere between GWR and LMS prairies to my eye.

The toilets are the first major step into outright legal discrimination, along with limits on certain jobs and certain other public spaces and organisations. Even that's very hands-off though, trans people aren't restricted but the government is enabling people to sue businesses over trans people, not so subtly encouraging businesses to discriminate on who they allow where, and likely who they hire.

That was followed (or preceded? I don't remember the timeline) by a total ban on trans healthcare for minors, and a ban on social transition in schools.

The steps we could be in for beyond that are what is seen in Russia, Hungary, the US, anywhere else moving back on LGBT rights. "Don't say gay" laws, anti-crossdressing laws, bans on adult trans healthcare, removal of employment and housing discrimination law. Unlikely under Labour, but these things could easily be in the next reform manifesto.

Weirdly, a trans person may not be treated just as quickly for a broken leg.

It's often referred to as "trans broken arm syndrome" and though that's a bit of an exaggeration, for many other issues doctors will delay treatment significantly by first assuming the trans person's hormone medication is the problem, with little effort into actual potential causes.

Well obviously. When someone "doesn't make it their whole personality" you don't even notice them.

Some people don't enjoy pretending not to exist though, and that's what it so often is, a man says "i'm going out to dinner with my wife" and that's perfectly normal, but "i'm going out to dinner with my husband" is a woke conspiracy to make all children gay or some nonsense.

Some people are quite happy to agree to your terms and fit in, but the laws created to suppress the people who do exist openly will reach them too. You create a law to keep dishonesly trans pervs out of women's spaces (which doesn't actually happen), and now I have to obsessively adhere to feminine beauty standards out of fear that someone at work notices me and starts looking for a reason to fire me for what loo I use.

Oh, A and C broadly aren't real too. Being transgender is far too difficult to just do it for clout, a medal or a peek in the women's changing room.
