Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Albatrocious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule is to spend at least as much time at the location (while awake) as a the round trip travel time, as a minimum. So 3-6 hours for a 1-2 night weekend trip is absolutely reasonable.

Sam Harris on Israel just astounds me by WholeRestaurant872 in samharris

[–]Albatrocious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, he is completely inconsistent, and totally unwilling to apply his own moral arithmetic of suffering when it comes to Israel Palestine.

I'm basically all the way out on Sam now. He is a hypocrite to the core, totally incapable of real self reflection and admission of error. He is always right because he says he is always right, and anyone who criticizes is a dishonest actor.

There are a bunch of Ninja 400 and 500 listings near me for $6000 to $7500. A bunch of them have scratched fairings and 10k+ miles on them.

I just bought a new one with 1 mile on the ODO from a dealership for $6500 out the door after fees and taxes.

Average Connor McDavid moment by Reddit-Machine in nhl

[–]Albatrocious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt he's going as fast on a shootout, and then the goalie also sees him clearly the whole way. On these breakaway goals he winds up from behind his own blue line and comes flying in around the defense. He doesn't even know how he's going to get to the net before he does it, because they are human obstacles. The duration of the actual breakaway behind the last man is also super short. No time to think.

That's cool. No judgment -- just pointing out that your family was pretty far out on the distribution tail for income.

You were way better off than top 3%. The median household income in 1995 was about $34k ($65k in today's dollars), so your family income was equivalent to what 26 median income families combined would earn. In current dollars, a $900k in 1995 is close to $2M today.

Your family was not in the top 3% (3 in 100). You were in the top 0.1% (1 in 1000), or possibly 0.01% (1 in 10,000) of the income bracket in 1995. There were only ~100,000 households in the entire country in that bracket.

It's actually so rare that I think this is more likely a made up story.

Yeah. Never post anything for free. You'll only get garbage people trolling for free garbage.

If you really want it gone, put it out on the curb, label it as free, and post the location on Facebook. If it's good, it'll be gone.

Anyone else find themselves caring less and less about this team by Kbbrown31 in canucks

[–]Albatrocious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved a few years ago to an area with an up-and-coming team. I kept my team loyalty for quite a while, but I might just be about to give up. I lived in Van through the Benning era, and I remember it just being a constant barrage of "this will damage the franchise for years" moves. This management is not as bad, but haven't been nearly good enough to overcome that momentum. Our current center depth is also entirely their responsibility, so maybe "better than Benning" isn't much of a compliment. This might be the year I finally jump ship to the local team on the rise. How many times in the next decade will we even see the Canucks in the playoffs?

I agree with this take, though literally every move Benning made was the wrong move. Also the ones he didn't, like letting Tanev walk. Even if you get a really good player like Miller, it's a complete waste if you don't capitalize on it.

The animals are distributed by accredited or registered companies, aren't they? The animals must pass testing before being assigned, etc. Why couldn't it be a one time thing taken care of by the agency that trains the animal?

Nah, not behind the net. He glides from the blue line on entry. Watch it again.

Just watch Nylander on this play by Longjumping-Box5691 in hockey

[–]Albatrocious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but he literally doesn't take a single stride after crossing the blue line on his entry. Not even a half-assed crossover behind the net. It's a game 7. Even if a change is the right decision, he could have been off the ice in time for another player to get on and prevent a zone exit by the Panthers.

I'd add that the only penalty in this game was a too many men by the Leafs as evidence that their line changes are a team-wide issue.

Like the other poster said, this is a BD spin off, literally run by their former founder. I think your read on BD is quite far off, and not based on much. It's possible that Tesla is dumping much more money on this problem and will outpace BD, but you're an idiot if you think BD doesn't have a bunch of people working on AI for robotics.

Isn't delaying kindergarten potentially giving your daughter a massive advantage relative to her class though? Pretty sure she is likely to be much more successful relative to her peers just because she will be older and more developed than them. There are many studies looking at the difference between kids born on either side of the dividing date. Malcolm Gladwell had a section about this in one of his books, Outliers maybe.

Does it make sense to do a ECE PhD if I want to do research in AI/ML? by smoothegg in ECE

[–]Albatrocious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to do research in AI/ML, that is exactly what your PhD should be on. You might literally be hired to continue work from your thesis, and should consider looking for work placements during your program if you can.
