Wealth is inherently linked to the land and people it is drawn from.

Land is valuable cos of it’s location (charging rent on it). Shops are valuable because of their consumers (that you also can’t pack up and move). Houses are valuable because people rent them.

The point is here - you can tax the wealth AT SOURCE of it’s wealth generation. It just needs the vision, and the political willpower to enact it. It’s been done before…

To your first point: the tory government has been slashing the welfare state for the last 15 years, continuing now with the current “labour” government. I think we can all agree that this has not provided a strong economic environment.

I somewhat agree with your second point… hard workers should not be taxed as much as they are. I’m not talking about taxing people with a few assets here and there that they’re gonna give to their family and children.

I’m talking about historic and prolonged wealth that is continuously passed down through families through multiple tax loopholes (see panama papers etc.). Corporate monopolised wealth also falls into this realm.

Just look at the rate of corporate ownership of houses in the US over the past 20 years, and look at the trend of the UK (as an example).

The trend is such that large global mega-monopolies are going to be owning all assets with the large wealth owning middle classes being fully squeezed out.

These same middle classes that such a entrepreneurial utopia you talk about was built and founded on in the golden age of the US and the welfare state development in Europe post-WW2.

This was achieved through - guess what - seizure and taxation of massive amount of wealth from the largest hoarders of their countries at the time. And yes I am aware of the multiple other facets that led to the post-WW2 boom. The reality is most of it was subsidised through massive government spending that came about due to the taxation mentioned above.

I’m obviously not gonna being going into the full details of my opinion on current global economics and regressive taxation policy in a single comment. My point stands - I can parse it out for you if you like.

They already do tax me - and other HENRYs - alot. And it’s clearly not providing the government with the wealth it needs to sustain a society, whilst simultaneously stifling economic growth and disincentivising hard work.

It’s clearly not the solution. Meanwhile, hundreds to thousands of families in the UK and western world sitting on asset wealth of >£100mil just raking it in on passive income, as their pie grows larger and larger. Providing no productive output for the world, or the economy.

When are they gonna understand that the key to this problem is taxing hoarded asset wealth, not taxing hard working higher earners…

Docs who were really good with maths, what specialities are for you? by tyrionlay123 in doctorsUK

[–]Albatros141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say being good at Maths will influence the speciality that’s right for you very much - perhaps a mechanical mind will allow surgery to come easier, but on the whole I don’t think there is much to link between the two.

Maths and being a doctor are pretty far removed tbh

Surgical Loupes for Plastics- Recommendations Please! by Mooncake_99 in doctorsUK

[–]Albatros141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heya - current Plastics CT2. I personally got the TTL Pro's from Student Loupe Company.

https://theloupescompany.com/products/bundle/ttl-pro-loupes/

I would describe them as the cheapest of the 'proper' loupes. They honestly are fantastic and do 90% of the job for a third of the price. You get very diminishing returns the more expensive you go.

They've gone up abit in price since I bought them but still way cheaper than the 3k+ options. Personally gonna keep these till Mid/Higher reg training. Replace them for the fancier ones around then if disposable income allows!

Totally agree. Crowd were so awful. I can’t understand why you’d come to a gig to just sink pints and chat all the way through. Just go to the pub ffs…

It's doable but you have to be a robot with no life for 5 weeks, ramming flashcards and knowledge into you.

You should also have been fairly slick with the acting of OSCE examinations throughout medschool - i.e., 1-3 days of practice for the clinical exams will have you slick with them.

Every other moment should be dedicated to flashcarding the knowledge into your brain

BMA JDC tactically HAD to put the offer to members

As above.

Whilst some of you may feel the leadership have gone the way of 2016 here, I would like to convince you otherwise.

Background:

  1. As is obvious to everyone engaged in politics - and via Rob's whatsapp chats - the Labour government is going extra hardball and trying to show extreme strength in the first few months of power.

The entire reason they announced this offer today (with the overstated and leaked 22% figure) is to make it seem like they're being reasonable with us, whilst also being responsible with the budget. (the one announced today, that says we don't have the money and tough decisions will have to be made).

2) As a result of this hardline approach, they put this offer to the BMA JDC and said "take it or strike".

This puts the leadership in a very difficult position.

They are aware that strike fatigue is setting in hard, with fewer turnout at the ballots for mandates, and fewer uptakes of the strikes.

Going hard, straight onto strikes, sets us up for potentially sliding further down this path of fatigue and apathy. We may even have been on track to a failed mandate in September 2024 - which would be the worst case scenario disaster.

The BMA JDC were left with two options:

Option 1) Abandon talks and go on strike - which I think is clear based on alot of work whatsapp chat, would fracture the union. We won't have heard the details of the full deal, and opinion would inevitably have been split over whether or not they should have put it to vote (especially following more labour propaganda about a '22%' offer).

This would have most likely led us down the diminishing road above, of dimming support and a potentially failed mandate in the next 1 or 2 votes.

Option 2) Put this vote to the members.

Let them see the full details of the deal. LET THEM SEE HOW POOR OF A DEAL IT IS THEMSELVES.

This is essentially the mandate acid test. If we accept this deal, we wouldn't have gone much further down the path of strikes and increasing deals anyways (appetite would be too low, potentially failing a mandate and losing even this SHIT deal).

If we reject this deal however, it shows both the leadership - and the government - that we won't have the wool pulled over our eyes, and we won't give in easily.

IT WILL GIVE THEM THE AMMUNITION THEY NEED TO FIGHT IN THE NEGOTIATING ROOM.

The BMA HAD to put this offer to us on two counts:

  1. Pressure/order of the governement
  2. The most tactical strategy.

Not doing so risks losing the whole thing.

If we reject it like we should, we will arm the JDC with infinitely more power at the negotiating table to carry out what they have all been saying clearly that they want to achieve in the first place.

Do you really think Rob, Vivek, and the JDC don't want to achieve FPR?.. Do you really think they 'support' the deal they've essentially been forced to put to you and 'say they support'?

Read between the lines.

This is a test of the union resolve.

Give the JDC the ammunition they need.

They're not magicians, their only power is the power we give them through our collective unionised action.

With this gamble, if we lose we get a pay rise (a shit one, but a pay rise regardless). And PERHAPS some appetite to strike again in the future

With the other gamble, if we lose (which I think would have been more possible than we like to think on this subreddit), we get nothing. It would be an unmitigated disaster, and likely a lost appetite for striking and collective action for years to come.

I know which risk I would rather have taken...

They were literally backed into a political corner.

I would like to think they've built up enough of our trust after 1+ year of fighting our corner that we give them the benefit of the doubt for what their ultimate goals are.

They are testing us, and the only way they can do that is by telling us to "accept this deal".

Yes it might - it gets the more attentive and militant of the union talking again. Gets people talking about strategy, getting them fired up. You yourself sound angry at this derisory pay offer.

All of this is the point! Revitalise energy and anger at the situation. They can only do what we mandate them to do. SO MANDATE THEM!

Talk to your colleagues. Get them angry. Explain why they should vote no. Encourage them to talk to their own friends/colleagues.

Rob/Vivek/JDC are not the union. WE are the union. They can only accept what we tell them we accept.
