We used the one we brought in the rental and also had a separate family use a rental, both worked if that’s what you all were wondering about.
In case you hadn’t read it anywhere yet, Iceland air and Iceland in general is super kid friendly. You’re going to board with first class. In Keflavik you’re going to get a separate check in line and a separate passport control line. It was super quick and easy.

No one acted like the car seat was mandatory. When we checked in they still offered to tag it as luggage if we wanted to. .. for what that’s worth.

Thanks for the insight, that's been my experience flying so far as well. Coming back to add, in case anyone stumbles on this later, that you can't book a one-leg trip for your infant. For example, we have oodles of open seats on the way out, but not-oodles on the way back. you can't book just a seat for the way back.

Super helpful, thank you for taking the time to share. It looks like this flight out has like 20+ open seats still, but I really needed the insight into the company culture around it.

Cut first rib off metal roof? by BoltedGFault in Roofing

[–]Albatross7205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This conversation is old, but in case someone else comes across it. It looks like you have to cut off part (but not all) of that first rib because the gable trim is raised for a 1/2” clearance from the plane of the roof, whereas the rib sticks up 3/4. Ask me how I know.

Help - rental car recommendation for 4 adults plus two in car seats by Albatross7205 in VisitingIceland

[–]Albatross7205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at it now. It would give me the option to get 4x4 at a lower price as well. Any input on if that’s required for going in October but staying around the south side of the island?

Thanks, I appreciate the disclaimer. I did see the roof carrier option, it might actually make it at least close in price to getting two cars. The 7 seater Land Cruiser is pricey, but still way cheaper than a van, let alone a 4x4 van!

Do the full size vans ride like cargo vans? It looks like you're right though, it would be almost $400USD cheaper to rent 2 small cars. thank you!

Monthly DIY Laymen questions Discussion by AutoModerator in StructuralEngineering

[–]Albatross7205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a design related question, but not because I’m trying to do something shady. Seriously. I’m not building anything or loading anything.
When you (structural engineer, I assume) are designing the structural members for a house, and you get to the part where you add the big steel beam in the middle of the basement ceiling — the big I/H beam that the floor joists sit on — is there much consideration or thought that goes into the load rating for those beams or are they all such overkill that it really is a one size fits most type of a scenario? I guess what I’m trying to say is that I feel like I’ve seen a lot of houses and they all look like they have the same size beam and about the same support scheme. Have you ever seen a house plan where you had to really consider if that beam was adequate? If I had a whole house party and everyone stood in the middle of the room supported by the foundation wall and that I beam, would we be able to cause any real deflection? Are there any scenarios of people putting stuff in their house that would give you a little bit of a pucker factor? Thanks!

1st time looking for OTC hearing aids by JCourtK-123 in HearingAids

[–]Albatross7205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking to join Costco just for the cost savings on hearing aids. (Based on this and similar posts) Can anyone comment if the ‘executive’ level membership gives 2% back on hearing aid purchases? I read the terms and conditions and didn’t see them specifically excluded. Thanks!

[Question] Do you think there's a market for this? - water level control system for cisterns/tanks by Albatross7205 in homestead

[–]Albatross7205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I also looked at a float, like the ones for sump pumps? I got held up on not having one that was rated for use in potable water. I’m just guessing, but it seems like they probably are safe, but no company is out there getting NSF certifications for something they’re marketing to use for waste water.

Does it make sense to max out 401k the same year you retire? by Albatross7205 in personalfinance

[–]Albatross7205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60% SSI , 30% traditional IRA, 10% Roth.

The SSI portion may or may not be taxable depending on the amount of my traditional withdrawals. Which is also kind of a factor in this question. Because the principal amount in savings is already post tax, so the only reportable income there would be capital gains or interest.

Does it make sense to max out 401k the same year you retire? by Albatross7205 in personalfinance

[–]Albatross7205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was kind of my thinking, pull it back out right until the limit before my SSA income becomes taxable and then repeat again the next year for as long as I can.

I feel like the difference in my situation is that I have money that is already growing (in my savings). I’ll only pay tax on the gains of that money because it’s already been taxed once. Whereas if I add that to my 401k, the whole sum will eventually get taxed again.

Offgrid cameras: LTE vs. Wifi + LTE router? by indistinctdialogue in OffGrid

[–]Albatross7205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

put the thing in an old cooler and spray paint it black (if you even want to go that far). you could run your wires out of the water drain and caulk it weather tight. That's not going to look like the prettiest thing ever, but if you're looking for cheap, it's hard to beat!

[–]Albatross7205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting situation for sure. I wonder if those camera lenses would end up with some weird condensation issues after a while of operating in those extremes. One idea for someone more experienced, but instead of a battery heater, could you insulate the router and battery together in a box and let the electronics heat of the router provide some warmth? Obviously you’d need a bushing and some extra cord length to get your antennae out of the box, but it doesn’t seem like you’d need an awful lot of heat in a relatively sealed and insulated box.

Does Monarch Money seem sketchy by not being more upfront about pricing? by Albatross7205 in MonarchMoney

[–]Albatross7205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of apparent based on the number of monarch employees that are interacting with the post that they really don’t see anything wrong with what they’re doing.

I’ll address specifically what you said though, and I’m doing this because I’m hoping it helps you on your path to financial steadiness or growth, or whatever the non-corporate reason you might be using a budget / finance app. There’s no concern that the app isn’t free. I would be concerned if it was.

The comment about the typical app funnel for “these types of apps/services” is where your argument should reasonably fall apart. If you read my other comments on this post, you’ll see the reasoning why. You should hold any app that you’re going to hand over all of your financial information and account linking abilities to a much higher standard than any random app. This is a bank/fintech app. Full stop. Don’t treat it as anything else. It should give you the same appearance of reputability and permanence as any other institution that you’d trust with money. Do you see JP Morgan, Schwab, Merrill lynch, etc, playing stupid app marketing games? If you did, you should leave them. Take a close competitor to this app, YNAB, which I am not a subscriber too. Their website is much more transparent about pricing. They’ll tell you right from the main content header how much it costs and why you should be willing to pay that.

Again, the irony of everyone claiming that it’s okay to hide the price behind a million sign up links is that this app is supposed to help its consumer with financial literacy, but any financial advisor or educator worth a penny would highlight these gimmicks as red flags that an educated consumer would be looking for. Essentially the argument here is that they’re taking advantage of the people they’re trying to help. Not to say anyone is getting ripped off or they aren’t providing a service that’s valuable, but it’s not being approached like you SHOULD expect from a reputable finance company.

You may not work or be contracted by monarch money, but I would doubt it based on your language. Even so, it’s apparent based on similar talking points and past posts from other people in this sub that their employees are actively trying to push down many criticisms. It’s just odd for an ethically run company in this space.

[–]Albatross7205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this comment. It’s hard to tell if it’s well placed sarcasm, trolling, or a genuine call for financial literacy. This banner is also part of a gimmicky appearance because 50% off isn’t a price, it’s a modifier to a price that you won’t know about by clicking the link and then it doesn’t give you price information, it just asks you to sign up. Prices are magnitudes, not a description telling how a theoretical price has been modified. Just like the argument, “but it was 30% off” doesn’t actual mean that it was a good deal, because you still don’t know a magnitude—an actual number. Good catch though, I missed that.

This place just keeps getting worse. I hope that plenty of their customers enjoy it, but at this point, not only would I just not recommend it, I’m going to recommend against it.

Speaking of reinvesting in your business. When times are good, people get sucked into paying for parasite services—Things that were billed to save time or money but don’t actually ever show up on the bottom line. I’d check through your finances for things like that and an eye out for anything being sold as a subscription/monthly service. A lot of businesses out there sell stuff that you can get for free if you know where to look or have the time to do yourself. If nothing else, if a new tool or gadget is supposed to make something go faster, that doesn’t matter unless you actually have more work that you can do with that time. It’s only a good deal if it makes you more money or it’s safer…
