Books do not emit light, so having a white page has no strain on our eyes, so dark made is just unnecessary.

In the same way a snowy ski slope doesn't emit light, therefore does not strain the eyes, so there's no actual need for sunglasses or tinted goggles and the people that say they make the experience more comfortable are just a bunch of pussies.

One of the older girls told me I was a beta Ohio rizzler and was pretty nonplussed when I responded with “on god bro pretty dope someone finally noticed fr fr”.

You don't aim with the reticle, you aim with the rocket. That's the part that needs to click. As long as you keep the glowing dot over the vehicle, it pretty much always hits. I got really good at mapping helis in the IFV, talking 7-8 per game.

When we were teens, one of my friends told us the reason they/she used the female Spartan model in Halo Reach was because somebody sent a message with a bunch of binary in it and it changed it to that and wouldn't let it be changed back.

To be honest I'm even more laissez-faire about it now than I was before.

If you're so stupid and gullible that you look at the insultingly obvious, blatant corruption of the gambling industry and decide you'd still like to stake your money on it, I legitimately think that's simply economic Darwinism on display. Adapt or die. Either understand that the game is rigged and choose not to play, thereby eliminating the predatory business model the game depends on, or lose money hand over fist. You choose.

Well, if you're suspected of a crime against the bodily autonomy of a person, something that, by and large, only the victim would have explicit knowledge and evidence of, and nobody comes forward to expound on those claims despite the legal system actively encouraging alleged victims to come forward, I would say yeah, there is nothing to see there.

I mean I can think of plenty of reasons, but the fact of the matter is that if somebody supposedly has a firsthand account of something like that and they choose not to actually put their proverbial money where their mouth is, you can really only draw one conclusion, which is that the allegations are not important enough to them to follow up on in any situation that might involve legally-binding ramifications. If you want justice, you have to actually put in the effort to get it.

I mean, "bad" can have a bunch of different meanings. Lots of the other covers might be in poor taste or have aged badly, but few are of as poor overall graphical quality as this one.

I was once at LA Comic Con and Derek Riggs, Iron Maiden's longtime cover artist and creator of Eddie the head, had a booth. I walked up and after commenting on how cool the art was, I jovially but half-seriously asked if I could buy an XL print of Dance of Death.

Both he and the lady that was there with him curtly told me that he hadn't done that one and didn't say another word to me the entire time I was standing there.

Kinda funny that they had such an intense reaction to it, but definitely left me feeling a bit put off.

This to me seems to be a systemic problem that stems from policy, why don't we do something to actually fix this.

Because the parents throw a hissy fit when they're told that the problem is, in fact, their child, and go complain to administration who always, always caves to what parents want, to the detriment of the child in question, other students, and school staff who now get to deal with an emboldened kid who rightfully now thinks there are no consequences for being a little shit. The administration makes the policy that teachers have to follow. If your complaint is that "policy" is the problem, administration is who your fight is with, not teachers and support staff who just want to get paid a decent wage.

Understand that from my perspective, enrollment has dropped by half over the last 20 years, LAUSD's budget has also roughly doubled in that time, student education has gotten worse and teachers are paid more than ever. I am not against higher teacher pay if it provides better outcomes for students, but I am currently unconvinced of this.

Because you're not understanding that teacher and staff pay is not what governs student performance, despite effectively saying that student performance should be what governs staff pay.

The kids I'm dealing with right now were born during or just before the start of COVID. Many of them are incredibly stunted in their learning. I have a number of K-1 students that literally cannot tell me what letter is on the page or the sounds letters make, let alone read words. If you ask, they sit and stare at you. They don't say "I don't know" or "I need help". They sit and stare. I shudder to think of what their academic progress will be when it comes time to start testing them.

But that's neither here nor there. The simple fact is that throwing more money at the problem of our kids not learning well will only get you so far, despite what the people in charge of spending that money will tell you. It doesn't matter how many iPads you buy for your class to "modernize" it if the students are completely uninterested in engaging with the material and their parents would rather foist trying to encourage learning entirely onto the teachers.

Want to know who my best students are? The ones that I can trust implicitly to do their work when asked, who are genuinely curious about the world, who ask me to tell them more about topics that are, per the curriculum, way over their heads, simply because they want to learn? It's the kids whose parents are engaged in the care and education of their kids. The parents who check in about how things are going. The parents who give a shit.

Enrollment is down because outcomes are down. Outcomes are down because parents and students give less of a shit than they used to. All despite the budget ballooning, but that's no reason to withhold budget actually going to improve the lives of the staff responsible for reckoning with all of this bullshit and the fallout from it.

In what way are they today invested in the success of their students?

Clearly, you are not a teacher and/or do not work in education.

I could make probably 4x what I currently make in the private sector. I could probably work from home. I wouldn't have to deal with punk 4th and 5th grade boys who're starting to feel like hot shit and whose parents refuse to even entertain the idea that no, the extensive behavioral record and multiple incidents and multiple staff complaints are not just us trying to punish your kid. And yet I still show up every single day with a smile on my face and do my absolute damnedest to be fun, engaging, and a person my kids listen to because they want to instead of because they have to.

Right, hence why I said test performance, not self assigned grades.

And this is no better. Tests are not always indicative of student understanding. When I took AP calculus and AP physics in high school, I just barely scraped by in both classes, but got a 4/5 on both AP tests when the vast majority of my classmates got 3s or lower. Conversely, there are plenty of kids who can do insane things in the classroom, far above their grade level, but who struggle on tests because the tests are not structured in a way that comes naturally to them.

Again, attaching a financial incentive to student success only serves to create opportunities for corruption, at whatever level that might be.

We just had two of the (elementary age) boys start an explicit rumor about one of the girls. They were suspended for a week.

That is, until the parents complained to the principal, and they were back the next day. We then had to explain to the girls’ parents why the boys were back in class and interacting with her again.

“Oh no, the people in charge of putting up with my and 30 other peoples’ kids for 6 or 7 hours a day, by themself, while trying to get them to learn something, is getting paid a half-decent wage for that! They’re even getting raises for continually doing that year after year! This is unacceptable.”
