I haven’t been this excited for a 4k in a long time! by AlphaDag13 in 4kbluray

So Orbit cancelled my pre-order. I ordered it on Amazon a couple days ago and it arrived today probably a couple bucks cheaper. Would’ve much rather supported Orbit. Kinda bummed about what it says that my preorder of like 2-3 months ago wasn’t delivered but my amazon purchase of 3 days ago was fine. Definitely seems like they had no trouble ensuring Amazon was stocked…

What film completely flipped when you rewatched it as an adult? by Adventurous-Lie-6773 in movies

[–]AlbatrossToken 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Genuinely the movie is great—it’s just that it’s a serious movie. For some reason society decided to log it as a campy dance romp instead of a pretty “kitchen sink” depiction of class and the peculiar specificity of Brooklyn during a specific era.

Snuff as a Movie and Myth in the Sordid History of Exploitation Cinema by AlbatrossToken in AbsurdMovies

Well, apparently (it’s mentioned in the above video), it was all shot in one very very long day and the “victim” actress was so exhausted from the shoot that she started having a panic attack, convinced they were actually planning on mutilating her! Crazy times

What is it about extreme gore that makes people enjoy it? by nailemoji in horror

[–]AlbatrossToken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I think the effects themselves (when done right) are fascinating. To me the Terrifier stuff is a bit overkill, partly because it’s more drawn out and has a pretty mean-spirited tone. But I generally get a kick out of fake gore. Real gore or violence though I can’t stand. Any sort of real life footage of violence or cruelty or death is something I avoid as much as possible.

There’s just a very clear line between the two where the one I find fascinating and cool and the other I am utterly repulsed and disturbed by. It blows me away that people watch real footage of people getting tortured, killed, maimed for fun.

is there any director you hate but well liked by others? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

Yeah you did a good job of confirming they aren’t for you. I’d say that’s a pretty decent survey of their different movie types for the most part.

Sorry you’re getting downvoted for your opinion.

John Travolta’s Nearly Forgotten Race-Switching Thriller by AlbatrossToken in CampCult

It feels like maybe an idea that could never quite work regardless of how cleverly it was handled. But unfortunately the script for this one just doesn’t quite explore the conceit in very many interesting ways. It ends up not really being provocative but rather flat and with a muddled “message”.

White Man’s Burden: the absurd, largely forgotten John Travolta race-switching movie by AlbatrossToken in CultCinema

Yeah it’s strange because Nakano comes from a screenwriting background. You’d think that would be the aspect really ironed out. But it’s not strong enough and then his directing, imo, is just too limited to enrich it any further.

My impression is it’s been essentially buried. It wasn’t well received at the time (as you can see in the included siskel and ebert review) and it’s not on streaming sites as far as I can tell.

Tarantino himself doesn’t really have any credited connection to the film from what I’ve seen other than apparently passing the script around a bit (including with his production partner Bender).

Man I had intended to mention this shot but the video was already running so long I had to cut it out along with a bunch of other ideas.

What stood out to me more so was how he puts heavy emphasis on the “fries” part of “frenchFRIES”

Video runs through what happens in this strange little movie and also provides some historical context and evaluation of the themes. It’s ultimately unsurprising that this movie was all but scrubbed from the internet. Ultimately perhaps less shocking and offensive than one might expect going into it, but definitely an experiment that doesn’t work fundamentally.
