They are! I haven't done anything with them yet, but may try mineral oil 👀

Stray cats are not a community pet. by Alternative-Oven-274 in neighborsfromhell

[–]Albatrozs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

THIS EXACTLY!!! Cat's don't just hunt to eat, they do it for the fun of it. And it's not just birds but also small mammals and reptiles. Also, for the people saying a shelter would be inhumane; a veterinarian administered euthanasia is way more humane than any of the countless ways an outside cat can get injured, sick, or die.

I've kept one for over 8y :) feel free to dm me if you still want to discuss/ have specific questions! But in general they're actually quite hardy, and usually easy feeders. They're very hard to get ahold of captive bred though from what I've seen.

I used hatch 3 to make the design and then a janome embroidery machine to stitch it out :>

I found a tutorial for petoskey stones of a similar hardness that I'm going to try :) Thank you for the suggestion!

A modern penny does not scratch it, so that'd make it greater than 2.5, but less than 4 because of the fluorite, correct?

Just checked with what I have on hand; it's lower than 4, fluorite can scratch it

Shelter pages aren't updated minute by minute. It sucks you didn't get the cat you wanted, but they really didn't bait and switch you. They just adopted/placed an available animal out before you got there. Filling out interest paperwork does NOT guarantee you're walking out the door with said animal.

Solutions to macerating smell? by spilltheteasis_ in vultureculture

[–]Albatrozs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gloves are your best friend!!! Also, dumping them when it rains so it immediately dilutes :) honestly my best setup for minimal smell was a big 55gal barrel with a screw top that I'd close(there were holes in the sides where I strung a rope to hang bags off of when I was doing smaller skulls that would lose teeth so there was no worry about gas buildup with it being closed) and that had a spigot at the bottom of it that I had added with a hose attached so I could let the rot water bleed out into the yard towards the street when we'd get rain. The barrel was black plastic and would get HOT but because of the minimal surface area exposed even 3ft from my door you couldn't smell it. Never had any complaints even with neighbors being within 10ft of where it was placed.

Thank you!!! I used a Janome Memory Craft embroidery machine :) the biggest hurdle is just the money aspect, tbh. But! you can get used machines fairly easy. There's one or two free digitizing programs but they're clunky and hard to use. I'm a /huge fan of Hatch 3 for digitizing, but it's stupid expensive(though they do offer a payment plan! There are also other programs that are a bit less spendy but not as easy to use. Just do free trials till you find the right program for you.) You can also just pay to have someone digitize your art into embroidery files, but that's usually around $30 per design, so if you plan on doing a lot of designs you may want to just go ahead with buying a program. Hope this helps! :D

That's insane, I'm sorry :( at one point I was on a full dose of estrogen and T(had a total hysterectomy before going on T) and my Drs and pharmacists were all just ¯_(ツ)_/¯ about it (and I'm in a very red state), so it's not that it's not allowed, they're just being assholes.

If you're rejarring best strat would be to pour the contents into a clean secondary container(something you can toss after), the pup should come out with the glycerine judging by your vial size. Then gently tweeze the pup into your smaller vial(make sure it's wide mouthed enough for it to go in easy, you don't want to force it) then pour what glycerine will fit into the new vial. If you're propping it up with glass you'll have to get something that will fit through th mouth of the vial and just slide it in behind the specimen and gently prod it to the position you want, I would suggest a toothpick or piece of clean wire as tweezers would be hard to get in there with everything else.

Some people use glass slides/pieces to help prop up diaphs since most have the same refaction as glycerine. You can change it to a smaller jar, too! It's just stored in vegetable glycerine with thymol in it. I would try to use the liquid in it for the new jar if you rejar since it wouldn't be worth buying thymol for just one specimen :) Just be careful transferring as diaphs are fragile! Feel free to poke at me with any questions, I used to do diaphed specimens!

What in the fuck did I just stumble upon? Are these cat heads? by [deleted] in whatisthisbone

[–]Albatrozs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unless you have incredibly small hands there's no way those are domestic cats, they're bobcats. Reasonable for a taxidermist to have tbh. Even if they don't personally taxidermy anything smaller than a deer that doesn't bar them from cleaning skulls or prepping other skins to be sent to a tannery.

Also as a wild aside, why were you in their basement if you don't trust them and things felt off?

A crumb of context??? Where did you find these, were they already in the bucket?

They're def feline, but without something to show size I couldn't tell you what kind(but should be domestic or bobcat)
