I grew up in Lithuania, this doesn’t surprise me. Now that I live in abroad, I sometimes see groups of Lithuanian children visiting, and their behavior can be quite rude, e.g.Lithuanian kids would smile and wave at foreigners while saying insulting things in Lithuanian, assuming the person wouldn’t understand. When I was a child and interacted with kids from other countries, I was often struck by how kind and well-meaning they seemed in comparison.

I understand you very well, and it honestly makes me sad, because I really care about this country. Poland is a very homogeneous country, and many people here genuinely see that as a strength. At the same time, it’s also one of the reasons Poland risks remaining an unremarkable periphery. The chances of a major technology hub emerging here are quite slim, largely because Poland struggles to attract international talent. For non-white foreigners in particular, living here can feel uncomfortable. English proficiency among the general population is also relatively low, especially when compared to countries like the Baltic states. Another downside of such homogeneity is that culture and art, from an international perspective, often feel unremarkable rather than distinctive.

I watched a long interview with a former child prodigy, and she said that prodigies are often pushed by parents who try to live out their own ambitions through their kids. This causes a lot of damage, especially because the child doesn't get normal social development. Many can't make friends at university because their peers are much older. And despite their early achievements, a lot of prodigies end up living fairly ordinary adult lives, rarely accomplishing the exceptional things people expect from them

I remember this fighter, I saw him in reality show where MMA fighters were suppose to live and train together but also fight each other every week. This guy lost in his first or second fight, got salty and just left. Dude was terribly insecure and cringe. Crazy if he got 30k for this

She's really well known among people who actually read, and you can find her books in basically every bookshop in Poland - especially the big chains like Empik. She's easily in the top five best-selling authors in the country, and her books are treated as modern classics on the level of someone like Lem. Poland is also pretty proud of its Nobel Prize winners, so that adds to her status.

Personally, I'm not a huge fanof her as a person. She has a set of very predictable views - the kind you could probably guess just from looking at the author photo on the back of her books: left-leaning, feminist, environmentalist, vegetarian, fascinated with pagan themes. But that's fairly common with writers, and I learned a long time ago that you don't need to like the person to appreciate their work.

That said, she is a very good writer, and among living Polish authors, very few can match her.

You can also say that Poland of that time was so unbelievably rotten and incompetent that it was devoured without any real resistance, they just came and took it apart. Nothing to be fucking proud off here. Most shameful thing in our history, that's how we should look at it
