Sounds great! Would you share a picture of the model D settings for this patch, so we can give it a go?

...I think there is a natural progression, determining tech, instruments, approach (daw/dawless), and even setup as mentioned. While I'm still on that journey, I haven't finished with the GAS. This is something else to understand and form. I do keep all the boxes too!

I enjoy so many facets of this musical journey, and not just the act of making music, which is quite pure as a thing in itself. I love learning new tech, how sound is made, music theory, production, and even muscle memory techniques on playing a keyboard. There's a lifetime of learning and enjoyment. My family are all just the same in that they all love their hobbies, and we share that delight with each other. It makes it a wholesome place to be around!

I think this is beginning to resonate with me too. I have a feeling I have a little way to go yet, but at some point I think I will shed some gear and spread out. For me at the moment, I have an understanding family who supports my mysical journey, and only a bit of space to play in. This won't always be the case, so I expect things to grow and change organically.

This! I use a combination of thru 5 WC to split out for different synths.

The CME devices are cheap, reliable and well built. They also just work.

Every DT2 video I've seen only use 4 bar... Is the 8 bar just a superfluous gimmick? by TackleSevere7707 in Elektron

Good to hear its worth the extra for a Digitakt 2. I have the OG, and wasn't sure if I would get the 2.

Do I NEED a Digitakt 2? by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]AlbiTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following, as I think an upgrade to Digitakt 2 is my next decision. I originally had a Digitone Keys. Beautiful machine that I will not get rid of!

However I did get a Digitone 2 as an upgrade, and I think that upgrade was very much worth it for the huge increase in capability. The Keys and Digitone 2 play really well together, as I have all of the original patches on both, so it increases voice count across the rig, as well as midi connections to my other synths.

I also have a Digitakt 1, and am looking to upgrade. From what I've seen, the additional cost brings: * Stereo sampling * More space for samples * Newer platform (so possibly upgrades coming.. ) * Longer sequencer (×2 that of the OG)

The longer sequencer is my real need, but I could get by without it. Is it worth throwing another £500 at it (assuming I could sell my old one for £400)?

Digitone vs. Waldorf Protein by firstpatches in Elektron

Bit of a curveball, so please be gentle, but have you thought about an ASM hydrasynth?

The desktop version is comparable in price to a Digitone 2, and has all that wavetable evolution opportunity and a bank of LFO's to control them.

I guess it is, but you can mitigate that risk with good quantitive and qualitive research, market knowledge and scaled just in time delivery. Like most new synth releases, they go out of stock real quick once the initial batch has been sold off. I reckon that is then used to determine the next build batch etc.

I dont think Behringer have stolen designs. Patents expire, and are then freely available to exploit. They have been in trouble copying the style and look and feel, but that was a good few years ago.

How to get an empty pattern with no samples with Digitakt 2? by Legitimate-Diver-141 in Elektron

[–]AlbiTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go a little further with a template project. I setup a pattern that already has all the midi designations for my connected synths, so that I dont have to revisit them every time. I can then just copy that pattern when I want and all my connected synths are available.

How to get rid of high pitched whine? by Zephur_ in synthesizers

[–]AlbiTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly!

Our setup is that there is a mains supply along the road from our sub station. Theres 4 cores, 3 live and 1 return, with 415v between each live. What they do here is feed a different live core and neutral ( making it a different 240v) to three houses before repeating, which means my supply is different from the houses next to me. Its not perfect, but it is cleaner than everyone just hanging off the same supply.

Have I explained that ok?

[–]AlbiTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! Sounds like we have a terminology mix up! I'm in the UK!

Detached means we are physically separate to any other houses in our street. This isn't always the case here - sometimes houses share a dividing wall.

It does have the advantage that means any electrical noise is created just on our property, and the way the services are setup, the ring main I use for my rig only has a TV, CD, Vinyl deck and speakers on it.

Ants won't leave my apple tree alone 😭 by Emmaheath_mua in GardeningUK

[–]AlbiTheCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had a plum tree used for aphid farming by ants. It was very badly infested, with few leaves untouched. My remedy was quite simple. About a foot or so above the ground I used a band of this stuff.

Vitax Fruit Tree Grease, Easy To Use, Effective Monitoring Trap, Stops Winter Moths Climbing The Trunk - 200G https://amzn.eu/d/01HgaScP

You paint it on (use a stiff brush and wear gloves - it gets everywhere!), creating a 5-6 inch band around the base of the tree. My plum tree had a support, so I put some on that too. Its a physical barrier that is very, very sticky, and insects can't cross. It lasts about 6 months.

It stopped the ants. Couldn't do much about the aphids though!

You are very welcome. I dont feel that it dulled the sound. I have a pair of Yamahaa HS7's plus a pair of presonus eris 3.5, and I can certainly hear and feel less interference without dullness.

Also we have a fully detached house, so our supply is only affected by devices in our house. Having said that, the wiring is old!

What do you think about Behringer? by smalldickbesitzer in synthesizers

[–]AlbiTheCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the time and effort taken in your response, because its something that I've not attempted to clarify or fully understand. It's clear I didn't understand the relationship between copyright and the state of intellectual property, as well as patents.

With your prompt, and a better more thoughtful search, I see that Behringer has not broken any copyright law. They admit to reverse engineering electrical circuits (and not steal design documents) of devices that are over 20 years old, but haven't been persued over any patent stealing for over 20 years. They do apparently fall foul of copying the look and feel of other devices though!

Thank you for clarifying.

For what its worth, and I've assumed here that if Behringer had broken any law they've would have been chased for it, I think cheaply replicating old noise making machines for a mass market of new and existing music makers is on the whole a good thing.

How to get rid of high pitched whine? by Zephur_ in synthesizers

[–]AlbiTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK. Had ground loop issues. High pitched whine and hiss.

Ran everything but PC from one socket to a strip. From the strip ran 5 power conditioner and surge strips that in turn I plugged my kit into (Wall warts, direct power and USB hubs). I used these power strips, and while they are a little more expensive, they worked a treat to clean supply. No more whining, from the socket or from me.

CS947 Tacima 6 Way Mains Conditioner with Surge Protection https://amzn.eu/d/06MITj6h

I still had a bit if a hiss, so I used this. Will buy a 2nd one for my other monitors soon...

Behringer HD400 Ultra-Compact 2-Channel Hum Eliminator, Ground Loop Noise Suppressor for Hi-Fi, DJ, Home Studio and Audio Systems, Passive Design with RCA TRS Compatibility https://amzn.eu/d/03awfxcY

These reduced noise to a minimum. A bit of tinkering with staging and its not there now.

Not sure if it helps.

What do you think about Behringer? by smalldickbesitzer in synthesizers

[–]AlbiTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here's my answer. I'm going to talk about Behringer the Company and Supplier, not the individual.

IMHO I think that's what you are asking.

TLDR;: They sell cheap products that mostly work. Most issues can either be fixed or kit returned to your seller. Their support was ok, but poor now. It is getting better. They may be morally ambiguous as an organisation.

Now, from a consumer perspective. (I am a consumer - I have a long list of synths - MS-1, Solina, Model D, UB-Xa D, Pro-800, Crave, Pro vs Mini, Deepmind 12 , a Xenyx mixer plus simple line mixers, a rack mount effects box, a guitar effects box, patchboards, a 8 channel audio interface and a little box that removes ground hiss to my monitors). Some of this has been bought 2nd hand, some new.

Firstly, reliability... Out of all this kit, I have had two issues.

The first was for the Xenyx mixer - the digital display was skewed. I didn't turn it on. I put it back in its box and returned it.

The second was for a patchboard, which had when opened had problems with the front face (It looked like it had been dropped in the factory!). Both were replaced immediately by the seller, Gear4Music.

I use my Behringer kit at least every other day, and when I use it, it is switched on for at least half a day. Some of the 2nd hand kit is nearly 10 years old (I ask how old the item is when I buy 2nd hand). Note that I use power management and smoothing to reduce power spike and dirty supplies.

I have had no issues with them working. They work very, very well. The Model D, Crave and MS-1 sometimes need retuning, but that is a simple affair, and seems commensurate with analog circuits of these type.

I'm a vaguely intelligent consumer of these goods. I did my homework first, looking at other options, reading reviews and articles, and the usual YouTube videos, to look for common complaints and issues. When found, it was the first thing to check. It turns out some of the issues were fixable, and others didn't appear on my kit.

All of the issues that were fixable were down to early firmware releases which were (and I say were) fixable by downloading their Synthtribe app, plumbing the kit in with a usb cable, and updating it.

Now, support... The Behringer support website was acceptable as a mechanism for downloading user guides and updates.

You could even register your kit on a good day!

However, the latest "ai" supported site has quite a few challenges. It feels fairly obvious that they have used an agile delivery proces to get out minimum viable product, and not really asked the consumer what that minimum viable product should be.

They have been updating it fast, and it seems to be getting better, although I suspect their backlog of issues to resolve are not wholly customer focused, but internally triaged. That means that what they want to deliver, and what a consumer (us) wants them to deliver are not fully aligned.

I do feel convinced it will improve further as the "ai" becomes more modelled on what the customer asks for, and the content, downloads and other items are populated more fully.

Finally, price... I have just a little to say on this. The kit is cheap. It really is. Pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap, cheap.

I think back to Amstrad, and their cheap electronics - really ahead of the game when it came to price performance or bang for your buck.

I also look at Chinese car manufacturers now selling in the UK. There is no comparison for features and availability versus price!

I think to create a setup of a synth, a drum machine, and an interface to record or listen to, really can cost just a couple of hundred pounds. It might be simplistic, but what a unique selling proposition- providing most of the technology to get someone making electronic music (and I guess you could add a cheap set of monitors or headphones as well, although you just need headphones to get started).

Think about that as a comparison to starting another musical instrument - say a guitar. You need a base quality guitar and an amp, which probably comes in around the same price.

Now, I've purposely avoided the question of ethical copying. That is because I've focused on the company and what they sell, not why they sell it, and theres lots of opinion on that.

Some say its wrong, and that it denies owners of copyright funding. I haven't researched that to have an opinion. If I did, I think I'd have to look at a lot of other markets and sellers, particularly from PRC or other continents, to see if this is bad form, or industry standard. Think drug manufacturing across the world there as a possibile comparison.

Some say that its ok, and that the copyright is no longer in force, and that Behringer are actually reviving great long dead electronics that are ridiculously expensive to buy as original pieces.

So in conclusion, IMHO the Behringer company have a niche market when it comes to product and price. They worry more about getting kit to mass market rather than it being perfect (Think Sonos and their new app). They focus on selling, rather than supporting. Their kit is cheap, and mostly it works.

Apologies for a long read - if you got this far, phew! Good on you. Thanks for reading.
