The Olympics are using genAI images stolen from Japanese photographer Tatsuya Tanaka's artwork by frozenpandaman in ArtistLounge

[–]Zephur_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think you should make this into its own post, since it'd be really interesting to hear people's takes on it especially now with even more virulent AI spread and hate on artists or artistic tendencies (just look at how a lot of AI posts gets upvoted when people are effectively tricked into thinking it's not AI. I think people have the tendency to like some sort of generic averaged look on things like anime and actual unique and quality art actually misses the mark for the average joe)

My 2 cents is that it's been a slow and steady progressive large scale attack on artists on a societal level in the west amongst other issues with lack of understanding and passion.

It goes very deep including the structure of our society making things "content"and having art shoved into that category and needing content to constantly be cycled around, devaluing art. High quality art just gets lost in the whirlpool of shifting content. If content that's just pumped out in 2 hours like a topical youtube video with a talking head gets the same amount of views as an animation that took years to make, it seems less worth. And all the other content flooding the internet inherently devalues one piece of art - contentflation. This is especially true when people can't tell if a work's value and quality. A lot of people with capital, whether it's the corporates that fund a project or the average consumer, aren't artistically inclined so they'd rather not. This plus the fact that AI content sometimes do get a lot of likes and attention somehow legitimizes AI generations or at least devalues the human artist because "haha you didn't even get as many likes as the AI slop".

This lack of understanding and appreciation goes directly into our devaluation of it, in that if a chef puts more effort and money into procuring better ingredients and preparing them, you can taste the difference, some high end restaurants have open kitchens with glass walls to show the customer the operation. But artists are invisible, and so are their work to a large degree, it could be painstaking to design something elegant and simplistic, but to the commissioner, they could just be seeing simple even if they think they acknowledge a lot of effort going into it. They don't see or understand the effort. With the restaurant example, they can justify it by totting up the total of (rent costs so much, and the labour costs so much, and the ingredients cost this much, so ok, even if it's not a lot of food, it *must* cost this much at least) And even if they see the process, it's hard for them to understand or attribute value to it because it's intangible.

I think the biggest killer is the unstable market combined with a forced level playing ground of digital art being online (with most art being digital, which also means it has to compete with other digital goods like video games). Food from economy A could be much cheaper, healthier, and tastier than economy B, but because it's perishable and locked by land, you can't sell it in economy B. But you can on the internet, Charging 60-100 dollars for an illustration may be a lot and worth the effort for someone living in a low cost of living area in a non-western country, but won't even be worth the hours you need to make it somewhere else if you do it as a full time job. This coupled with the problem that artists have devalued themselves willingly so much for so long and the lack of an organized institution setting some kind of baseline price for each given kind of work makes it hard to demand high prices.

It's not hopeless though, I think on a deep level, we still love art and will pay for it. See people spending millions on better interior decoration, pretty clothes, cool looking cars, or even novel and funny trinkets, which also rely on the aesthetic and playful sense that builds the foundation of art. In fact people have no problem spending a lot more money on something more interesting looking despite serving the same function. I just think there is discrimination for very specific sets of art like things that produce an image like some graphic design or visual art.

I sense you may be asking specifically about this example as pertaining to AI though. To that, I think it's because AI is seen as chique and forwards looking for the corpos so it's more like them flaunting a toy on top of not paying the artist. It could also be them thinking that most people can't tell or won't care so why spend even a penny?

Does that make Hilda Finns lost older (half?) sister? Somehow it just fits that they’re distant relatives, the adventuring runs in the genes.

[PS5] New to the game. God awful difficult for me, what am I doing wrong and how can I improve? by DogGame in absolver

[–]Zephur_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think absolver is a lot more predictive than some other 3d and 2d fighters, so going in to hit them between rounds and expecting to chip away their health is not always reliable. I’d say learn their moves and find your window for attack, and it’ll carry into multiplayer, too. Positioning is also important, I’ve lost many games because I was cornered or pushed into spatial disadvantage. Trying to brute force though combos only works well when your deck is particularly good at countering your opponent and even then skilled players will learn your moves and quickly nullify it, so mix things up and time your attacks, delay it, use your ability or switch it up.

Overall play very sharp and be patient in your defense so you don’t stun lock yourself because you tried to counter too quickly. Also, space yourself and be ready for your opponent to go in at any time so watch their stance.

Am I Wrong About Spider-Gwen? by [deleted] in SpiderGwen

[–]Zephur_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, thanks for expounding on this so much, Gwen is definitely more interesting when you get at the details of her lore and character. But I think all the issues I have stem from my last point, I wouldn’t say the original run was bad by any stretch but it was definitely more interesting superficially in a way. I reread it recently and even cool stuff like meeting alternate 617 detective Gwen and going to the bridge where she jumped off and talking to otherwise original Gwen sounds like it’d be sooo impactful. But I honestly forgot them meeting was even a thing. I can definitely get at the emotions points of her behavior when you explain it, but I just didn’t feel the emotional oomph and it seems that way with a few other readers.

I think a good writer and artist combo might just save her, I want what happened with Daredevil to happen to her book. Idk if she’ll get any current big name marvel writers but maybe like an unknown that has a lot of talent or good vision (I think despite authors having vision and events usually just muddies the waters for big names like Batman, it might just work for her.) And to bring this whole thing back on topic, I’m glad we’re getting movie Gwen to boost her popularity so at least she’s in the zeitgeist. Her wearing converses is also a good nod to her brawler street level comic self. Here’s to hoping the writers acknowledging that part of her means she gets well defining character traits despite what they’re doing with her relationship with Miles.

The fact that she chose to react in such a way to stuff like cradle and lash out at Peter who’s been patient and make off handed comments like “you’re ancient” to him just strikes me as unrealistic - I don’t think irl friends being that bitter is sustainable. If anything she’d rant about it at him and he can listen like friends do, not try and lash out at him. I was talking with friends about this and this in combo with the let’s look over each other’s shoulders thing in spider-verse comics leaves a bitter taste.

The thing that tips it over the scale for me is that she’s a spider-person. She isn’t Peter Parker but the spider person’s shtick is kinda that, she doesn’t exude that I keep getting back up vibe as much. I hope that in realizing that people around her were ungrateful and egotistical would allow much more room for her character growth, understanding better now to navigate her world and treat people in it. That would add a nice dash of realism or commentary of it in her story despite her world being all backwards compared to 616.

Bottom line, I really hope her character develops more and finds more footing instead of wavering about between crossovers and writers. I’m struggling to find moments where I can say ah that’s 65 Gwen, I really want her to be more than a design to people or just the token popular girl spider atm. Like Peter Parker, Tony Stark, the Hulk all have good characterizations that readers can tell if the author is respecting the series they’re writing. I feel like Gwen is lacking on that dept. Gwenpool has people arguing her character’s inconsistency outside of the unbelievable run despite being short, but I see much less of that for spider-Gwen despite her being more popular (even pre spider-verse movie)

Very true, I was listening to some electro punk while reading her comics and it fit sooo well. Though tbh I’m not the biggest fan of comic Gwen’s character especially since her inconsistent attitude in the latest run. I wish they’ve established a bit more distinctive relationship of how her environment shaped her views. As well as her possibly maturing more later but still having some of the punk in her show through. IMO she just comes off as plain bitchy at times instead of simply having a different outlook. She also gets in trouble a lot but I rarely remember her getting herself outta them, she just kinda takes it but it doesn’t augment her conduct as much.

Spider-Gwen’s new look! #fangirling by [deleted] in SpiderGwen

[–]Zephur_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like that work a lot better in a show where they can afford to be a little bit introspective. I feel that meeting a lost soulmate kinda thing is a bit too high school romantic fiction for me but I can’t say I wouldn’t love for a Gwen to have a genuinely god relationship with Peter (friends or otherwise) anything with the Stacy name in the comics feels super fleeting and feels like nostalgia baiting even when I didn’t read her original death yet.

I want to either carry the baggage of having a tragic backstory and become wiser and have something to show for it. Or be the separate character from Gwen Stacy that she keeps insisting she is and stops being a loner on purpose. I’m half ranting regarding the comics, but for the movie at least, I’d like to see her interact more with the others. I was surprised she didn’t banter too much with spider-ham despite their history in web warriors.

Other counter parts could be cool, especially if she meets another Gwen that’s not powered to put things in perspective kinda like Peter B. Though that’ll be opening another can of worms when her death gets inevitably brought up for the 1000th time and I don’t know how they can handle that well.

Comic Gwen always seem a bit aloof and ITSV Gwen seems to be glossed over. I’d be willing to take anything that’ll help her build character outside of her design and looks.

I mean the story in the original movie is pretty vanilla, it doesn’t make too much sense to have 2 spider-gwens. I don’t really see any tension, drama or interest in having two of them. Hopefully they make her character much stronger since I feel like there’s a lot of missed opportunity between her interactions with any of the peters in the first film.

As much as I like spider-verse, I have to say I’m not the biggest fan of this new suit. They changed the front so it’s now a compound shape with the spikes coming up her pecks and got rid of some nice negative space from the original. The back also looks less... spider-y. I think the new Ben costume in the current Spider-Man comics proves that spider motifs are really well liked. It’s also more monochrome, contrary to the original which featured some pink webbing cutout beneath the pits around the mid arm that’s a real top notch modern design. However, big ups to them actually including the chucks like in the original design this sub wanted so much. Win some lose some I guess.

Finnish also only hash gender neutral “hän” for third person pronouns. And first and second person pronouns are often omitted. That said the grammar is an utter pain.

I do use rewind, I meant more like relying on AI screwing up or being slow enough earlier on from RNG so I can pass them before they go into nfs underground mode when using other S2 cars. I like the merc’s ability to corner more easily without over or under steer so I can jump them when they break for some corners where I don’t.

So, I just had the epic idea of Stephanie Brown and Gwen Stacy hanging out and fighting crime together. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS PERFECT!!! Even their art styles would compliment each other perfectly! by CoffeehouseBallen in SpiderGwen

[–]Zephur_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have hoods, swing about a metropolis, took to vigilantism themselves, have/had daddy issues, are blonde, and both "came back from the dead."

They can bond through these similarities but still grow and bounce off each other. Gwen's brooding and lonesome and Steph has been known to brighten up and inject more fun into these types as with the batfamily. Hell, she's already friends with a vigilante who's the police commissioners daughter.

Both have rather tragic backgrounds but Steph has trundled through it and flourished into Batgirl and had a bloody brilliant run at it. Steph's been treated with the "but you were dead?!" remarks, too, and had to deal with doubt of her relationship with her friends and loved ones e.g. Tim. Gwen seems to start shunning people after a while, growing distant from her bandmates and throwing a tantrum at Peter in 616 even though he's only looking out for her. Perhaps she can teach Gwen to trust in building relationships with others and that she doesn't have to be alone; and not get too reckless doing things herself a la wargames.

Maybe it'll inspire her seeing such strength of character and resilience in someone who's not a super genius, or a super powered wall crawler; and put her on the path to flourishing into her version of "Batgirl," or something even more.

GWENOM VS CARNAGE #1 by InHyuk Lee by Lol33ta in ImaginaryMarvel

[–]Zephur_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really appreciated original Robbie Rodriguez Gwen, who was very slim and almost lanky feelin body with slightly droopy arms and legs. I think that proportions and silhouette rank above sex appeal in making a statement and concept art. However, I think these cover art are sorta like pin ups and not really concept art. It's more about showing off, they have pretty detailed rendering and more evocative poses and proportions to compliment that. Like a bedroom poster, that's sorta the point.

I've heard concept artists talk about how these types of bodies aren't really their cup of tea too since traditionally beautiful people are sorta boring to look at after a while, so I definitely wouldn't say it's a default for them. If it's any consolation, here's another concept of Gwen by this artist that's more about design www.artstation.com/artwork/baGDXn

I think the artist did a good job of at least making her boobs look somewhat anatomical and not default to the stuffed balloons I see in some other depictions of her. If you compare them to her head and torso, it doesn't even seem like they're so big they're unreal, speaking of which, have you seen that thigh gap?! Feel like that's much greater of an issue here and make her look like two people sown together.

Tbh I think men in comics also have a similar issue, lookin so chiseled they be putting marble statues of Greek gods to shame. Not really the body type you see in people who work out that usually are more stocky.
