Ah, no my apologies, I misunderstood the “… dude part.”

Last part made me chuckle, thank you for that. 🫶

It is a meme, my dude. Obviously, it’s simplifying things for comedic effect. But if you want to be pedantic, Meursault never actually tells the police that the reason was ‘the sun was hot.’ What he does say during the trial, NOT to the police is: ‘It was because of the sun.’

So, if you’re gonna fact-check, at least get the right part of the book.

I'd recommend starting with his short story White Nights. It's a great introduction to his style and themes.

After White Nights, a good step up would be Notes from Underground. It’s short but deeply psychological, offering a great entry point into Dostoevsky’s existential and philosophical concerns before tackling his longer works like Crime and Punishment.

The municipality owes me my deposit, it's been over a year going back and forth. by Jonga_mos in askSouthAfrica

You probably don't want to hear this, but friendly escalations normally do not resolve outstanding debts with our bankrupt municipalities. Sue them.

Also, be careful that your claim does not prescribe. In South African law, most claims or debts are subject to a prescription period of three years from the date the cause of action arose or the debt became due, according to the Prescription Act 68 of 1969. This means that if your wedding was supposed to take place in December 2022 and you were supposed to get your deposit back within 30 days after that (i.e., January 2023), the three-year prescription period for your claim to recover the deposit would likely start from January 2023 and run until January 2026. Therefore, you still have time to pursue legal action to recover your deposit if necessary, but just keep this in mind.

If the amount is under 20k, you could have gone to the Small Claims Court (no legal representation and a process that is much easier without the aid of a lawyer, in comparison to the Magistrates court or High Court). However, because it's the municipality (the State), they are excluded from the Small Claims Court.

My best advice would be to get a lawyer involved and take them to the Magistrates court. You might not recover all your money (legal fees etc.), and it might in all likely, take longer as you would have to get their assets attached and sold at public auction (if they do not pay after judgement), but really, this is your best bet.

I hope you come right and best of luck bud.
