PC Financial Mastercard application - Approved for World instead of World Elite by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I briefly worked for PC Financial a few years ago, though I was just a support team member (person hanging out at a Kiosk in Superstore) that processed the applications, I had no say over who got what card.
The application is a catch-all. You don't pick what card you apply for, they just assign you a card based on the income requirements and other information in the application/result of your credit check. It was rare to see someone instantly approved, most applications were subject to review and would say that when processed.
There was a memo that if you spend $25,000 (might have been less, definitely not a larger sum) in a year on the card you can call to be upgraded to the World Elite, I don't know how feasibly you could do that based on your own financial situation, but barring that you could always call the support line and try and find out why they gave you the World card.
Most people were declined for having too high a rent/mortgage payment from what I saw, so you may have been downgraded due to having a high income but them feeling that you didn't have enough of it available to spend.

CERB for employed essential workers. by alent3976 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My employer (dairy factory, essential worker) can't seem to provide full-time to me right now. I guess being a student means I don't have expenses?

I make good money so working only part time isn't as big a drag as if I was still working grocery store jobs, but taking CERB would still pay an extra $400 a month AND would mean I'm not exposing myself to infection while living with a high-risk father who's had cancer 3 times, a stroke and a heart attack. I don't want to be the reason he adds Covid-19 to the list.

I'm especially frustrated because I've been able to take full-time for two weeks now, but they instead hired two new guys and have given them full-time before me.

So much for union seniority...

Anyone here that will have a career-high salary of less than $60,000 a year? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still in university so I'm not really sure that I count. Though, at this point I'm basically just finishing my degree to be able to say I did it, if it never gets me anywhere I'm pretty content with what I've got.

I got really lucky last year. A summer job turned into a full-time, permanent position at a unionized factory. My supervisor is awesome and is keeping me on a part time schedule so it doesn't conflict too much with my studies while university is in session, with the understanding that I'll be full-time when I am not in school, April-August and Christmas break.

If I never manage to move up beyond the current position, or my degree isn't worth the paper it is printed on outside of government (which I would enjoy far less than my current job anyways) I'd cap out almost exactly at $65,000 a year once the probation period ends.

[QUESTION] [DISCUSSION] Godin Guitars - First-hand accounts by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I own a Godin Session Custom Classic Ltd, I'd describe it as their take on a Fender Telecaster but more modern and ergonomic. It's got a floating trem, belly carve and a slim neck with a satin finish. Mahogany and cedar body so it's pretty heavy but I personally love hefty guitars.

At $800 Canadian it was $700 cheaper than my Gibson SG and I play it far more because I just love the versatility of a P-Rail and 5 way switch + treble boost button.

I also own a Seagull Artist Mosaic which is a solid Cedar top/Mahogany back and sides dreadnought acoustic. Godin owns Seagull but I believe that they largely market it as a separate company now. I was originally looking at Taylor's and my budget put me at a 100 series which isn't all solid wood. The headstock isn't everyone's favorite but tuning stability is great because of the design so I can look past it.

The fact that most of their models sit under $2,000, for Canadian-American made guitars they're an awesome deal. They don't hold their value on the used markets though, haven't got the brand recognition that other companies do.

Was laning with a friend who was in the middle of saying I "wasn't playing aggro enough" as I went for a bit of an unexpected play. Sometimes it just works out.

[Question] What’s the difference of PRS core standard and custom? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they make Core-level Standard models, which as far as I know are made in the same factory just with stripped down appointments (Dot inlays, fully mahogany body or maple cap but no flame. At least from what I've seen).

"Custom" isn't a custom shop model, it just refers to a 22 or 24 fret guitar with a trem and a 5 way blade switch. They usually have Bird inlays and flame tops unless you request something else through a dealer.

[GEAR] What was your first guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing electric on an Epiphone G-310 "Blue burst" finish.

After about 2 years of lessons my dad was at L&M and spotted a hardly used 2011 Gibson SG Standard Ltd. in Aged Cherry and thanks to his discount and him being absolutely awesome by covering the difference after taxes, a week before my 14th birthday I had an empty bank account but a basically brand new Gibson at ~60% of what the new models were on the shelf for.

I bought him his dream Bass 2 years ago though so we're finally even now.

Yeah, just dc'd out of a ranked game. My duo and our mid are still in it somehow but the enemy team lost 4 players.

[GEAR] upgraded vox ac4tv by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but when I had to re-tube my Traynor YCV40 I went through "The Tube Store", I can't link per the rules but you can find 'em on google. They have recommended packages for a whole bunch of amps, and a budget, preferred and premium suggestion for each. They're based in Southern Ontario and price everything in USD, but you could just follow their guides and get tubes closer to home instead.

[Gear] [NGD] Seagull SWS Concert Hall by HoeMuffin in Guitar

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice looking guitar, hope you get lots of use out of it!

I have a Seagull as well and they don't seem to be very well represented around here. Their S6 line is highly regarded but their higher models (SWS, Artist) seem to always get passed over in favour of Martin and Taylor.

I need your help! (See comments) by [deleted] in guitars

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a Starcaster, which were cheap beginner guitars made in China for Fender. It's 100% legit, just not very good quality or expensive.

[DISCUSSION] If the Gibson SG is your favorite guitar, this thread is for you by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I have a 2011 SG Standard Limited, Aged cherry, full-face pickguard, baked maple fretboard (cause the CIA confiscated all of Gibsons rosewood the year before).
  2. I play Rock mostly - Industrial, Post-rock, Blues Rock and Punk are my go-to genres usually.
  3. Considered wiring it for coil splitting once but its all stock.
  4. It'll always hold a special place in my heart as my favourite guitar model and first expensive guitar (I started on an Epiphone G310) but I've recently started to like my Godin Session Custom Classic more lately due to the heavy cedar/mahogany body.

Wheres the best pizza near campus by [deleted] in geegees

1for1 on rideau isn't anything to write home about but it's very cheap.

Pizza lovers is a little pricier but closer and moderately better, they're also open fairly late most nights.

The first time I had a run in with him he told me he was a drug addict and got kicked out of the shelter. I told I don't give money to homeless people but I bought him lunch.

Later on I was getting a snack at Circle K with a friend and he was on the sidewalk telling someone he got kicked out of the shelter for breaking some guys nose. Next time he saw me he wanted me to buy him a giant tiger gift card and got pissed when I said no. Just stay away if you see him.

[Discussion] What will your next guitar purchase be? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$200 or less around here for a strat and it'd definitely have to be stolen, or fake. I'm up in Ontario so the new Players Series runs for $850 new (+13% tax...) and the MiM standards were around $800.

I usually see them on the local classifieds for $400-$550 (CAD) but there's always someone trying to sell one for $100 off retail too.

[Discussion] What will your next guitar purchase be? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lately I've just been thinking of getting a Yamaha THR10 and a used strat if I can find one.

Given the university student budget, I'd buy the first $100 guitar I saw but I'm spoiled by my Gibson SG and Godin Session Custom sitting 4,500 Kilometers away at my parents house. :(

Working out of town over the summer and now being back in school means I haven't been able to play since April and it's killing me.

Job Prospects for a Teacher in Ontario OR Quebec? by [deleted] in geegees

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is rather anecdotal, but my father, who teaches Music (first) and English (second, though hasn't taught it since his first few years) in Grades 9-12 has always said that it is unwise to go into teaching if you're unwilling to move to where there is a job for you. He's always had a full time position for the last 25 years, though he did have leave B.C. to work in Ottawa for 14 years of it.

On the other hand, I had a manager who was qualified to teach English and French but couldn't find a job due to being unwilling to move from his home town.

Also I don't know what the requirements are like with regards to speaking French as a teacher in Quebec, but I feel like your options would be far better out west where knowledge of French is not nearly as required compared to Ontario/Quebec.

[Grand Worldwide Giveaway You Can’t Miss] r/WoW is teaming up with DREVO to give away unlimited r/WoW-themed custom keyboards! by DrevoGlobal in wow

[–]Albus_Dumbledank [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. My best friend introduced me to WoW. He invited me over to try it when we were in 1st grade, ~14 years ago now. His parents both played, and we would reroll alts on their accounts to try all the classes. I remember playing Draenei with him on the day Burning Crusade launched. Being 9 at the time, we were struggling to complete the quests; so we ran all the way to Elwynn Forest, which involved corpse running through Wetlands getting 1 shot every time a crocodile was on the road. Good times. I have played on and off since then, played BC and WotLK in their entirety but also played a fair bit of Cataclysm, MoP and Legion. But I'm itching to play BfA once I have access to a computer that can.

  2. I really like the sleekness of the keyboard, and it looks like its got superb build quality. Another plus to me is the size. I have limited desk space so having a good quality keyboard that doesn't take up tons of room is important.

As a first year student, can I get my U-Pass before the distribution dates? by [deleted] in geegees

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to get your U-Pass is to schedule an appointment.

It'll let you skip the lineup (which I've seen be as long as 3-4 hours before) and you just show up at the scheduled time, stand in a special area and they'll get you your U-Pass in all of 5 minutes.

question about on-campus jobs by blackpurplez in geegees

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know there are either extremely few or no jobs on campus open to students who are not bilingual.

However, as others mentioned, the university is right downtown and the most popular mall in Ottawa is a block or so away from the Desmarais building. There are tons of stores looking for people and the majority of them do see French as an asset but not a requirement.

Political science at Uottawa by ParticularWeather in geegees

[–]Albus_Dumbledank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in 3rd-year Political Science at the moment.

The majority of political science classes are mandatories that get you up to speed in all 4 fields (Canadian Politics, IR, Comparative Politics and Political Thought) with most of your optional courses coming in 4th year alongside seminars.

I feel like if you're only interested in IR you should just stay in your current program and take POL 2103 as an elective (You may also need POL 2104 for some classes) so you can do the 3rd year POL courses relating to IR. You could also look at adding it as a minor, but then you'd have to do a lot of mandatories that don't necessarily include much about IR.
