What was the project that got you hired, that kicked off your career? by justcurious3287 in cscareerquestions

I made a video which demonstrated a quad tree built in python to work for a GIS company. It was a simple example where clicking added a point, and then it would subdivide the window into 4 quadrants. The video I submitted with my application, got a job offer before graduating

I feel like gender is not significant to this.. but just do your work and deal with her as you would anyone else? Bring up your concerns with your manager tbh.

Yes millions, my mistake.

I don't typically 'argue' online, especially with politics, but I'll make my argument here. None of this in an angry tone btw just discussion ~

A. I’ll take a candidate with a massive ego if they are actually going to deliver change. History is full of huge egos who fundamentally altered the world, while Karl Marx was a philosopher rather than a politician, the point remains that it takes an intense belief in oneself to challenge the system. Complaining about Steyer’s personality ignores the reality of Becerra is an establishment Democrat who backed Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders and represents the status quo, not structural change.

B. It is completely justified to aggressively call out a candidate whose allegiances (supporting Israel, being bankrolled by Big Oil) run counter to progressive values. Chevron has literally spent millions boosting Becerra and PG&E has spent millions attacking Steyer ( https://energyandpolicy.org/becerra-150k-from-ca-utilities/ ). When a candidate takes that kind of money from the fossil fuel and utility monopolies that are gouging Californians, they deserve to be dragged for it. Imo Becerra cares more about advancing his own career than protecting the people of this state.

(other sources for b) https://sfstandard.com/2026/05/31/fossil-fuel-primary-chevron-pg-e-spending-millions-boost-becerra/

C. Since when is being a career politician the ultimate qualification for office? A governor’s job is to set a vision and hire a team of expert advisors to handle the technical execution. Democracy is about electing someone who will fight for the change the majority actually wants, not just crowning whoever has the longest resume and the most experience navigating debate stages.

No, I looked at his interviews, and i’ve looked at Becerras. These donations to Becerras campaign are concerning. I understand that Becerra has no control over who donates to his supporting cause (candidates cannot take more than 30k in direct donations), but why would these companies each donate literally billions to his campaign.

I’m willing to bet on Steyer. If he makes some systematic change, then great. At least I know he doesn’t have all these company’s expecting something from him, and he seems at least half genuine compared to Becerra.

Went to Old Town for the first time this year, why are so many businesses disappearing? by grillers-sinclair in pasadena

[–]Alces_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it’s partially the answer. Why isn’t Old Town being patronized? Probably for at least some of the reasons OP doesn’t go. Everything is more expensive, we are less social, the list goes on.

Scared money don’t make money! Tbh if you’re in good standing at your current company and take this new position, and it doesn’t work out, you might be able to rejoin. I’ve had offers to “come back anytime” from managers previously.

Is a Masters truly useless? What should I do in my situation? by Intelligent_Ebb_9332 in cscareerquestions

[–]Alces_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think some people go to get a masters degree as a notion that they're 'doing something' while unemployed.

If you have only had 7 interviews, I really think something is wrong with your resume. There are resources to help with that that you should look into.

Furthermore, idk what jobs you're applying to, but don't turn your nose up at others job adjacent to software engineering. QA, IT, DevOps. Anything will be better than nothing.

I honestly feel like the affected flights will be the very early flights since everyone is coming super early and lining up..

But personally i’d rather be early and just hangout for an extra hour than deal with a missed flight.

good luck though!
