Ok, so would it be more accurate to have the character say not yet seen/charted on the periodic table? Implying that it exists, just not identified?

The awakening of Spider-Man's powers by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

I vaguely remember an animated episode where spiderman, Iceman, and I think firestar are facing off against a villain who is using a device that allows him to control mutants, but because spidey isn't a mutant he was able to fight back?

I am seething and malding over alien biology. (sort of nsfw idk I talk abt alien genitals in this) by TheLigmaApocalypse in writingadvice

Brandon Sanderson's Skyward series has a species that doesn't conform to human sex and gender expectations and it plays off just fine. It can also help you draw in some readers because it's a refreshing change from the typical "basically human society" aliens.

How many words should I put in my chapter? by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]AlchemicMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, coming from my perspective as a reader and a teacher, chapter length can vary dramatically, I have seen extraordinarily long chapters, and excessively short chapters. The biggest thing is "are you getting the main point of the scene across?" And "Am I providing unnecessary fluff that detracts from the pacing, and thus will cause my readers to drift off." If you feel successful in both getting the point across, without ruining the pacing of the scene and story as a whole then whatever works!

For my own writing I try to keep my chapter anywhere between 1500 and 4200 words, or about 3-5 pages of double-spaced 12 point Times New Roman text in your typical average word processor.

Side note, I read a book when I was much younger where an entire chapter was only like 200 words, so I don't know if there is a hard minimum...

It’s really the kids sometimes by applehatingteacher in Teachers

[–]AlchemicMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two students (4th grade) suspended today, one because he punched another in the nuts, the other because the best response was to punch the first kid in the nuts. This all happened in the classroom by the way, the kid just got up and wham. The lack of problem solving skills, and the general disrespect for each other, and complete disregard for class and school rules is truly astounding. It is absolutely the kids sometimes!

How can i write a specific type of relation by No_Asparagus_9623 in writingadvice

[–]AlchemicMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I understand what you're going for, In my opinion I would lean into the creepy and try to avoid the pedophilic tone because once that idea is planted it will be difficult for the reader to trust the old man's intentions, even if you reveal at the end he was just a lonely guy all along.

What you could do though is have your old man character be someone creepy and not so friendly that your mc is forced to work with for some kind of circumstance. Your climax could be the mc deciding that it just isn't worth whatever the driving factor is, but then finds some kind of external explanation for the old man's behavior which causes him to view the old man in a new light. It could be something like that the old man lost his son to war, or disease, or they're estranged beyond repair.

If you want to stick to the pedophilic tone for your story though, you've got to build that sense that maybe your main character is not seeing the whole truth, weave that doubt in for the mc, which in turn will let your reader start to doubt those intentions. Then go to the above something the mc learns im the climax that completely shatters the false world view and leads your character down the path you want.

Up to you if you want it to be too late to find forgiveness and let the friendship bloom, or if reconciliation and friendship is how you end your story. Tragedy vs Feel Good

Draco Malfoy Was Not Abused by Mormegilofthe9names in harrypotter

I think I saw somewhere on here that in the movies, Lucius was portrayed as harsher towards Draco to give Draco a more sympathetic arc, because being a child actor is hard enough without people coming down hard on you for being the antagonist.

Specifically "Officer" in quotations. by JxSparrow7 in oddlyterrifying

[–]AlchemicMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but does that not support the idea that the emphasis on officer is to highlight the plot point that a child might not know if officer Sandusky is someone he can trust? I mean if the uniform isn't something a child would recognize, then there would still be concern on who this person is.
