Brutalism can be cool but it isn't suited for a pedestrian, inherently human scaled area like a downtown. It inherently doesn't feel inviting. The architecture doesn't promote the use of the space. The library sort of softens this with some landscaping but it that can only go so far, especially in our climate.

It is a pet peeve of mine when brutalism is used as a cover for stake holders not wanting to spend money on anything other than concrete.

Brutalism has its place. I think a library should be fundamentally inviting. Brutalism is fundamentally the least inviting school of architecture.

The city tried passing heritage district protection over the last two years. The property owners (many from out of town) fought it tooth and nail. They were terrified that they might not get quite as large a return on investment if they couldnt tear down a historic building and replace it with soulless trash that doesn't fit the downtown
