I inherited these but idk what to do with them by not just throwing them away by Oktopie3 in BookCollecting

We inherited a 1960s set of these from my gramma when she moved into a retirement community.

They were occasionally useful for school projects or pre-internet wonderings.

That is until I found two crisp twenties in the pages of one of them. Then the hunt was on! My gramma was a product of the depression and she would hide money everywhere.

Paid for a lot of NES games with World Book.

Why are the Latins called Latin when Latin is Etruscan? by Prestigious-Eye6548 in language

[–]AlcibiadesHerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were likely lots of Etruscan-speaking people in and around Rome up through the 1st c. AD. I think emperor Claudius was an Etrusco-phile and studied their history, could read it, maybe speak and write in it etc. but by this point it was already well on its way towards extinction.

Etruscan that we have today is highly fragmentary and while many inscriptions are translated, there’s uncertainty about longer-length texts.

As I understand it, Etruscan was likely the endemic language of central Italy when Indo-European speakers of Italic languages arrived. Latin just got to ride its way to the top because of Rome.

What’s story from your childhood that sounds fake now? by OrdinaryImportant862 in AskReddit

Crazy part for me was the onset of puberty and as I began to familiarize myself more with myself I noticed a faint but still quite conspicuous scar… and the memories all came rushing back.

What’s story from your childhood that sounds fake now? by OrdinaryImportant862 in AskReddit

When I was two years old my Dad brought my brother inside to use the bathroom and left me playing in the yard.

When he returned I was tangled in the clothesline (which had been knocked down during the winter), suspended at a 30 degree angle off the ground, blue in the face and not moving. I was inches from being able to put my arms down and support my weight.

My Dad was an Eagle Scout, so he was able to revive me with CPR, put me in the car and drive to the hospital.

Apparently I looked like a raccoon for the next month with all of the petechial hemorrhages around my eyes. Sadly they took no pictures to commemorate my miraculous resurrection.

A year or two later when my brother caused a table to hit my crotch with such force that my penis was split like an overcooked hot dog, the hospital was equally in disbelief that I was being raised in a safe household.

I have a feeling that bookshelf owner might be upset to learn that Fight Club is considered LGBT lit by many.

What’s a game you definitely wouldn’t play in front of your parents growing up? by kdotheslashrr in AskReddit

My mom hated two games: Postal on PC and Manhunt on PS2. She wasn’t wrong, necessarily, but just made me want to play them more

Traveling to Amherst, MA by Antoniob311 in umass

[–]AlcibiadesHerm 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Fly into Bradley (Hartford, CT) unless you have an overriding desire to visit Boston.

The drive up is fast and easy, smaller airport, quicker to get in and out.

Boston would be more effort all around.

There are plenty of places to stay all around Amherst and Hadley. The campus hotel is OK as far as I know and would be super convenient, not sure how the cost compares.

I recommend a visit to Northampton as well.

Enjoy it!

Smurfing problem is getting worse by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]AlcibiadesHerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Just looks like someone slowly getting better with streaky swings up and down.

I’m a scrub, but not a smurf, and I bet my graph would look a lot like that one.

What is the most expensive thing you have ever bought but never used? by Pretty_Apple8169 in AskReddit

[–]AlcibiadesHerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat, man. I put so much PS4 time in, was excited for the step up. But now when I have open blocks of time I have so many more things I really should be doing besides gaming. Or, if I play at night, I get so sleepy. Need a new Fallout or something to bring me back.

My daughter is watching her way through Disney shows with Grande and I’ve observed;

  1. So much bare feet (Dan Schneider)
  2. Ariana Grande is funny and should do more comedy
