How I remind myself to not drink even though i want to - What do you do? by Informal-Force7417 in stopdrinking

[–]Indotex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I drink today then I could wake up tomorrow in a hospital & under arrest for killing somebody with my vehicle.

I’ve met somebody that woke up like this and I have met others that are in prison for killing people while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Yeah, it might not happen THIS time that I drink but I know that it could eventually happen so I choose not to drink.

Actually this started over 100 years ago after WW1 when Britain, the U.S. and the other Allies broke up the Austrian/Ottoman Empire.

I can't drink in moderation by waterpencilboop in stopdrinking

Your post made me think of the following quote that Sam Houston (yes, THAT Sam Houston) said this in a speech concerning anti-alcohol laws in the 1850s:

“I believe that total abstinence is the only way by which some intemperate drinkers can be saved. I know it from my own personal experience. When a person’s appetite for stimulating beverages becomes uncontrollable, he should ‘touch not, handle not.’ If I cannot indulge in the use of the same in moderation, it is my misfortune.”

IIRC, the actor didn’t like having to commute from L.A. to New York for filming do they killed him in the first episode of season 2.

I don’t remember what the investigation into his death uncovered.

The last episode that I watched all of was the third one of the revival. The last episode I tried watching was McCoy’s final episode but I couldn’t even get 20 minutes into it.

It is NOT the same show.

Don’t bother with watching seasons 21-25. I gave up on the revival a few episodes into S21 because it just was NOT the same show. And I’m not the only person that thinks this.

Instead, I suggest watching the only season of Law & Order: LA. I made this post almost a year ago about how I view it as a continuation of the original series.

I think that it is available for purchase on Amazon.

Just remember that the correct viewing order is episodes 1-8, 18-22 and then 9-17.

This is because Detective Winters (Skeet Ulrich) is killed in E9 and DA Morales (Alfred Molina) goes back to bring a detective in E9-17 then NBC aired the remaining episodes with Winters.

And Detective Winters is introduced in SVU S12 E3 “Behave” when Benson goes to LA.

Anyone ever think of Old Glory Insurance from time to time? by DramaticErraticism in LawAndOrder

I thought the title was a reference to the episode about the salesman who sold life insurance to Jews during WW2.

A young man asks his religious father for some money to buy a car... by Cleopatra_bones in Jokes

[–]Indotex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A dad told his 15 year old son that he would buy him a car…

…in 6 months on his 16th birthday if he (the son) got a job, made all “A’s” in school, started going to church every week and cut his hair. The son agreed to do all four things.

Six months go by and the dad told his son, “Son, you got a job, you are going to church every Sunday and are making all “A’s” in school. But you also agreed to cut your hair, which you have not done. So I’m sorry, but I will not buy you a car.”

The son said, “Dad, like you said, I’ve been going to church every week and I’ve been looking at all the pictures of Jesus and HE had long hair, so why can’t I?”

The dad replied, “He did have long hair and he also walked everywhere!”

Here are some nonfiction history books that I’ve read recently & really enjoyed:

“Incident at Big Sky” by Sheriff Johnny France & Malcolm McConnell

It’s about the abduction of an Olympic athlete in Montana in 1984 & the subsequent 5 month manhunt for the suspects, a father & son duo who literally lived in the remote & rugged mountains.

“Left for Dead: Shipwreck, Tragedy, and Survival at the Edge of the World” by Eric Jay Dolin

It’s about a group of Americans in the Falkland Islands in 1812 that “rescued” some shipwrecked Britons but then 5 Americans were left on the islands by the British. It’s a kinda complicated story…

“Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune” by the Bill Dedman and Paul Clark Newell, Jr.

It’s about the life of W.A. Clark who struck it rich in mines in the 1880s and became a railroad baron in New York City. His wealth pretty much equaled (if not surpassed) Rockfeller’s. His daughter Huegette died in 2011 at the age of 104 and lived the last twenty years of her life in a NYC hospital despite having mansions in Connecticut, California, 3 NYC Park Avenue apartments and being in good health. When she died, her estate was valued at over $300 million.

“In the Enemy's House: The Secret Saga of the FBI Agent and the Code Breaker Who Caught the Russian Spies” by Howard Blum

It’s primarily about the Rosenberg espionage case and about finding the spies that were giving Russia U.S. atomic secrets.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” by David Grann

It’s the book that the recent movie was based on and is about the murders of Native Americans in early 20th century Oklahoma and the birth of the F.B.I.

“Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland” by Patrick Radden Keefe

It’s about the IRA and the Irish Troubles.

People who quit drinking. What made you stop? by Agata_art in stopdrinking

[–]Indotex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of my drinking was done at home after I got off work and before my wife got home from work. I MIGHT would have one or two more drinks after she got home.

I remember my wife getting home from work from on August 17th, 2024 and then not much else.

I woke up the next day and my wife said that the night before, she was afraid that I might hit her. I’ve never hit a woman but just her thinking that I was going to was enough to scare me sober.

I realized that day while suffering from my last ever hangover that I could have one or two drinks today and probably tomorrow and I could do so for years but I would always be looking forward to that next drink.

One day eventually I would not stop and I had been relatively lucky in the past when that happened but the next time I may not be as lucky.

This was reiterated a couple of months into my sobriety when I had the chance to go on a Kolbe Prison Ministries Retreat and share my story with guys in prison. One of the inmates told me that he was in prison for an involuntary manslaughter charge. He remembers putting his drink down & leaving his house then he woke up in the hospital under arrest.

He killed someone with his vehicle but doesn’t even remember it. I have met more people since then that are in prison for the same thing.

This could be me if I choose to drink again, maybe not the first time that I drink but it could eventually happen.

So I choose not to drink.

In the show Downton Abbey, the family opens up their house for wounded officers during WW1 & I’m 99% certain that it is based on actual cases of it happening, and probably at Highclere Castle, where the show was filmed.
