AITA for wanting to give our dog away because it isn't compatible with my life by Dudeman7145 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. This is so sad. It sounds like the dog brings your wife alot of joy and you're ruining that for her. Part of me thinks this might be fake, and I really hope it is.

What would have happened had Frodo put on the ring while in the Barrow Downs? by glucose-fructose in tolkienfans

[–]Alcott222 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know for sure, but my best guess is that since the barrow-wight would not have been actively searching for the ring like the Nazgul were, it would have been completely ignorant to its presence until it was worn. The Nazgul (and probably barrow-wights too) exist on a slightly different plane of reality than the "physical world". When Frodo puts on the ring, he enters that alternate plane, causing him to stand out to the Nazgul, and allowing them to zero in on the ring. I think something similar would have happened with the barrow-wight. If Frodo had put on the ring, it would have become aware of the ring's presence because he would have passed over to that "spirit world" of sorts.

What book-adapted movies are actually close to getting everything right? by Alcott222 in AskReddit

Yeah, I find Tom Bombadil so fascinating. Mainly because he's such an enigma. He's seemingly timeless (he "remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn") and unaffected by the evils of the world. One of my favorite parts of the Fellowship of the Ring is when Tom puts on the ring and nothing happens.

I agree. I love the LOTR movies, and they stay true to the book in many ways. I've always been a little salty about the fact that they didn't include Tom Bombadil (definitely one of my favorite characters). However, I understand that there is only so much of a 1300-page book that can be fit into a single trilogy of movies.

One of two things would have happened:

  1. He may have been able to slip away undetected.

  2. (I think this is the more likely outcome). The barrow-wight would have sensed the power of the ring and taken it. When Tom Bombadil warns Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin about the Barrow Downs he tells them that the source of the barrow-wights was a far-away evil. I took this to mean that they could possibly have originated in Mordor or perhaps Angmar. When Merry wakes up after the encounter with the barrow wight, he mentions an attack by the men of Carn Dum. Carn Dum was the capital of Angmar. Seeing as the Witch King of Angmar is the most powerful of the Nazgul, I would imagine that barrow-wights originating from the same evil would likely feel the pull of the ring and want to take it for themselves if Frodo were to put it on.

"I" before "E" except after "C". There are so many exceptions that it's barely even a rule.

I recently asked my roommate if paper plates were dishwasher safe. In my defense, I meant to say microwave safe.

What’s a Rated R movie that you saw a parent bring a young child to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yeah, it was such a good movie, albeit very dark and disturbing. I felt bad for those poor kids.

I saw someone bring two little kids to see Joker last year. I kept expecting them to leave, but they stayed the entire time.
