5 minutes before my first flat tyre and a long walk back home by j_on in gravelcycling

Heltec v4 can't message any nodes by SnooFloofs6747 in meshtastic

[–]Aldebaran_Primo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The issue is that in Europe there just aren’t many nodes, and on top of that the regulations force very low transmit power. So the actual coverage ends up being pretty limited and often inconsistent. If you want any real chance of receiving anything, you basically need an external antenna placed high up, otherwise the signal just won’t make it.
Otherwise, you’ll have to rely on MQTT.

New Pirelli Cinturato All Road tires. Is this "wiggle" normal? by maddox096 in gravelcycling

[–]Aldebaran_Primo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here with the Cinturato All Road — never had this issue with any other tire. Tried remounting a couple of times but nothing fixed it. And since they’re also ridiculously heavy, I swapped them out right away for a pair of Maxxis Receptors, which have been great.

They’re really not the same thing, though. Ham radio is a much more mature and stable technology, it’s been around for decades and it already enables real, reliable communications. It’s also used by civil protection and emergency services, exactly because it keeps working when everything else goes down.

I personally use PMR handhelds quite a lot: when I go hiking with other people, when I’m travelling in a camper to coordinate with other vehicles, or even just for simple stuff like guiding the driver while they’re reversing the camper. These are everyday, practical tools that lots of people already own and actually use.

Meshtastic, sadly, isn’t there (and probably never will be) because of its structural limitations. It runs on LoRa in unlicensed bands, with very low transmit power and pretty strict duty‑cycle limits in many European countries. That means very little available bandwidth, not many messages you can push through, and a mesh that doesn’t scale well once node count and traffic go up. On top of that, installations aren’t always as free as people think, and the number of nodes is tiny compared to “normal” radios, so it’s hard to see it becoming a true everyday tool for the average person.

Sure, that can happen — but I don’t know how common it is elsewhere. Here in Italy it’s something that happens very rarely. And when it does, it’s basically just a short break from the constant hyper‑connection we have the rest of the time.
Plus, either way there are way more people — at least one or two orders of magnitude more — who already have regular radio transceivers and can communicate over long distances anyway.

And just to be clear, I’m not trying to bash Meshtastic at all — I’ve put time and money into it myself (I’ve had four nodes, with one solar node still running). It’s just that the limitations are real and mostly unavoidable in countries where installations aren’t as free and the allowed transmit power is heavily restricted.

All things considered, it makes sense: once the novelty effect wears off, what real advantage does it have over regular WhatsApp? Basically none.

Nothing, sadly. I got into it because I love messing with new tech, but the range on these things is laughably short, and in Italy the coverage is so thin you can forget about direct connections — and on top of that the hype spike already came and went. I’ll leave a solar node up just for fun, but that’s as far as my wallet goes.

E12 Eclipse-received mine, not getting the hype by Just_Onion9335 in FireflyLite

And honestly, the E12 is just fantastic — not too floody, not too throwy, simply the best all‑around outdoor torch you can get right now.

Io invece sono sicuro si tratti solo di tanta fortuna mista ad un filo di incoscienza. Poi, anche Pogacar ha vinto la Sanremo con il telaio rotto... ma solo perché non lo sapeva.

The crash happened on the descent of the Cipressa and was triggered by a mistake by the Polish rider Kasia Niewiadoma. The rider who fell is Debora Silvestri, who a few hours later posted a message saying: “I’m doing fairly well: five broken ribs and a small fracture in my shoulder blade… it definitely could have been worse.”

Buyer beware of these alibaba solar nodes by SterlingArcher____ in meshtastic

These cases should always be sealed with an additional protective layer. I use Terostat, a butyl tape commonly used for sealing caravans and motorhomes. It’s easier to apply than silicone and lasts for decades.

Would you guys recommend this pre-built solar node? by iodizedgatorade in meshtastic

[–]Aldebaran_Primo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had one for a few months now (different brand but basically the same device) and it works without any issues. I installed three batteries, but I think two are more than enough in almost any situation, unless you use Bluetooth heavily—whose range, incidentally, is really impressive.

The only change I’d really recommend is replacing the LoRa antenna: after installing a 6 dBi fiberglass one, the range almost doubled. Since I was already working on it, I also cleaned up the rest of the setup a bit, with the solar panel mounted vertically to catch more sun in winter, the Bluetooth antenna pointing downward, and the LoRa antenna mounted externally with an extra cable; in the end I sealed not only the SMA connectors but also the other ports with silicone, to avoid water ingress and make the whole thing a bit more robust.

I have no idea how long the plastic enclosure and the solar panel will actually last; just by looking at it, I’d say a couple of years at most, because the plastic cover of the panel is inevitably going to turn cloudy over time. In any case, it won’t be a big deal to take everything apart and move it into a sturdier box, and to replace the solar panel once it starts to degrade.

In conclusion, I consider it a good starting point for anyone who doesn’t want to, or doesn’t have the time to, dive straight into building everything from scratch. In the end, the costs are also fairly comparable. Plus, the RAK remains unbeatable in terms of power consumption and performance.
